Mela 3 / 4 has the BEST midi transform tools outside of Mozaic and it doesn’t take any programming.
@audiblevideo Please describe these "midi transform" tools. ignorant and curious. Kinda like Fugue, or am i way off?
I did a video on the midi section of Mela 3. This has been expanded in Mela 4 and integrated more into the app itself. But this vid will give you some idea of the possibilities. As mentioned earlier, Mela is a great synth, a great midi module, and a great fx unit. Pity Mela 4 is still mono but I imagine poly will come soon.
Not really similar to Fugue. It’s really cool though. It’s got an arp, echo, strummer, chord player, etc. It can get really crazy and weird if you push it, too. One of my favorite midi tools for sure.
I hear you, brother, humbly accepting the call! 😂
We need assistance from successfully treated individuals on how to reduce our uncontrollable 'experimentation' condition.
@Luxthor, @danimal, @HotStrange, @Gavinski and @audiblevideo all have provided great answers, thanks guys! I'll just make a few more comments. Going from Mela 3 to Mela 4 will feel like a big jump because unlike v1-3 Mela 4 is highly modular and visual. In older versions the Mela synth and Mela FX plug-ins have modules statically laid out and signal flow is predetermined, you can only swap the order of filters and effects. The biggest flexibility versions 1 to 3 have is the modulation matrix where you can modulate any parameter with modulators. Mela 3 introduced Mela MIDI AUv3 which is a modular MIDI Processor. With the plug-in, you decide which MIDI modules are used and how the signal flows between them and of course which parameters are modulated.
Mela 4 takes this idea further, bringing the Mela MIDI flexibility and modularity to both synth and effect plug-ins. You can now build fully custom synths and audio effects from scratch. I've built it so that when I want to create a specific type of effect or a sound in my music I don't browse my collection of plug-ins instead I open Mela and start building a preset from scratch. Like, sometimes all you need is a filter and an LFO, why have anything else in the UI that would get in the way? Mela lets you create super simple patches as well as complex ones. Now this may not be everyone's cup of tea, and you can still browse presets and pick and tweak the synth/effect you like, but it's optimised for sound designers. And to be honest not just for sound designers, it's the tool that I use when I want to explain basic synth concepts to a beginner. I load up modules and show them how linking them up in various ways gives me different types of sounds.
Check out this video which introduced Mela 4 back in May:
Since then there have been 5 more updates. With every update, it's evolving with new capabilities and modules. By the next update (which should be soonish), there will be over 50 modules. You can check out the What's new in Mela? YouTube playlist, which showcases new features and how it's evolving. Check out 3.x update videos for MIDI-specific features, Mela 4 added new MIDI features as well of course, but 4.x videos focus more on audio capabilities. There's also Changelog if you want to read details about each update.
The last thing I would add is that Mela's capabilities continuously improve, evolve and expand. Unlike a lot of AUv3s that stay the same throughout their lifetime, Mela is not like that. A new version of Mela comes out every few weeks with new features and modules designed around user feedback.
Ok, I'll stop now before this post gets any longer, but feel free to ask me any follow-up questions here or anywhere else.
Forgot to respond to this last bit. Been working hard on polyphony for 2 months now, it's been a huge task getting all modules to become compatible with polyphony and polyphonic modulation. But I feel significant progress has been made and I hope to have it ready for the 4.7 update. (For reference, the current App Store version is 4.5, and getting ready to finish 4.6 soon.)
Great. And just to echo your previous comment, yes, you really keep working hard on Mela 4, adding new things all the time. It's impressive. I can think of many subscription apps where the dev is not doing anything to justify the fact it is a subscription. With Mela, it's not a subscription model but the latest version gets constant improvements. It's very clear that you put a lot of time into improving it 🔥
Nembrini has a "half price sale" on now.
Yep I absolutely love the way he’s been improving it constantly. Easily one of the best devs on iOS and one of the best apps on iOS. What you get for the price is crazy to me.
@Samu can probably help lol but I’ve slowed way down lately and have only been buying new apps that I absolutely can’t be without it. Somehow I’ve managed to get to a spot where I’m mostly happy with my setup lol
That said, gimme all the apps 🤣
App-O-Holism is real and hard to cure if one keeps on looking for 'quick fixes'.
One of the keys to my recovery was to actually go thru all the apps I already had one by one and check if they still 'click' and do something special that no other app does and if it's something I actually enjoy using.
I do admit that all the apps have been a good lesson in learning synthesis and how things work and what I really 'need' to do the things I enjoy doing and more importantly how to do it.
Even my most recent purchases (Thump One, miniBit, Blip Box and Phase Monkey) can quite quite easily be re-created with for example Drambo but sometimes I just fee lazy
I've also been 'lucky' in a few give-aways and gotten some 'freebies' as thank and that has saved me some bucks on the more 'expensive' apps.
The biggest 'single purchase' outside annual Logic Pro sub has been the Moog Bundle and prior to that Twin 3.
I've managed to stay ~4 apps per month and <$20/month on average during 2023.
Learning that apps one already has and figuring out what one really needs is the key to recovery...
Cheers!
I believe @Samu when he speaks about certain apps and features.
I believe when he criticizes certain apps and features.
But I will never believe @Samu when he says that he is not an appoholic. No way, haha! 🫣

The direct insta/support-buy days are definitely over and if/when I get new apps it's after careful evaluation and check against what I already have and ironically I'm currently removing more apps than I'm getting.
I do get some freebies as thanks from time to time and sometimes I get lucky in give-aways.
Some new tools/toys do 'fill gaps' that I can't easily fill with the tools I already have.
Thankfully I now have a good grip on what I actually 'need' and that makes things a lot easier when it comes selecting if/when I get new apps. (Ie. I know what I have and what an additional app would bring to the toolbox).
The most fun I've had during all this is the learning process on how stuff actually works.
Cheers!
If I didn't already have more than 2 alternatives to Fosfat on desktop, I'd> @Poppadocrock said:
Does Nembrini go below 50%? I feel like half-off is bog standard for them.
50% does seem to be their go to discount. I can’t say for sure, but if they have it’s maybe been 60%. The majority of their intro sales and app discounts seem to be half off, but to me 50% is a good deal.

Which desktop apps cover Fosfat territory?
Sidechain any simple sine-osc synth and a noise generator / sample with any compressor with custom bandwidth listening, like Pro-C.
@Gavinski thank you for that video, i recently got Mela 3, from the awesome dev, and didn't even know it did stuff like that. And I'm glad he keeps making part 4 better and better, will probably grab it once i better understand 3. Now ill go find your other video on Mela 3 to see what else im missing.
Nice! I think that was my only vid on Mela 3 but I did some other stuff, maybe 2 vids, on Mela 2 if I remember right. Cheers!
