  • Yeah in fairness I’m happy to go on the bench. Can you swap me round please @senhorlampada

  • not quite sure what a place on the bench means (being available as a substitute I guess), but generally interested to provide some noise and synth arps depending on what fits in the place

what about vocals? could do some experimental atmospheric vocal sounds too

  • I’m just wondering if there’s a case to be made for each segment to be a collaboration (if we really don’t have space for as many contributors who step up) - a bit like the old vs one from 2020, random partners in crime, maybe it’s just too complicated though… like I said, I’m happy to step aside and just do video duties, bit of cat herding and curate a folder of sounds for any and all to use…

First I'll load a piano sound, craft a 4-6 note motif, a chord progression, and a variation or two in the same vein as Classical composers. (The piano is simply for marking down the music and probably won't appear in the final piece.)

Do this now and share your motifs, chord progressions… I’d like to hack a few sketches of your inputs. It’s a great writing prompt to have some constraints and then modifying that work into a custom piece for my time slot will be easier. I know many will want to wait for something visual but it would be awesome to hear 4-6 notes that re-occur in the final work if we have something to target. For a movie of this type an interval could be enough to make a lot of compositions cohesive. The tritone or any interval that repeats up or down 1/2 step (the “Halloween” Michael theme). Cliche? My favorite film music tends to be an excursion into pre-existing music… hello John Williams.

Then I'll research electronic instruments that existed in the 1920s. This article will help me learn what did exist back then.

    https://artsandculture.google.com/story/the-history-of-instruments-the-first-electronic-instruments-philharmonie-de-paris/3gWB5os2Ut8abQ?hl=en

Share your research and recommend apps we might also align on to add more cohension.

And I'll recreate those sounds in Obsidian, PolyWave, or even Koala with its ability to play back single cycle waveforms.

The "orchestra" will probably be from Korg Module, probably a blend of various packs layered to create a richer sound.

Lot’s of good stuff there but there’s a massive amount of sounds free in Decent Sampler. The free “Venus Theory” sound packs are perfect for this type of project.

I probably won't use drums, or will use drums super sparingly if needed.

They are more powerful when used for the most dramatic moments. Luck of the odds there.

On the master track I will place Alteza (not for a super long Ambient reverb but simply for a bit of space and shimmer on top). Then I'll feed this into Wires for an approximate 50 wet/50 dry blend to evoke a more "old timey" feel, and maybe the delay as well. Then I'll slap on Barricade and adjust to -20LuFS (which probably won't trigger the limiter at all, but one can never be too careful). Then I'll use TwistedWave to normalise the output to whatever is required.

Hopefully, someone gets the assignment to do a final mix. It’s going to be Doctor Frankenstein no matter what amount of coordination is applied. It would be wonderful to see a few creatives share their efforts for a complete score too. I could imagine someone composer an improvised live score… @GeoTony would probably prepare an AUM rig and pull that off to great effect. @LInearlineman has the skills too to just react to a story and can do editing and overdubs too.

I admit I did "phone it in" for "Vampyr" as I figured "just make it unsettling". But, for "Metropolis" I want to go all in. I'm of the mindset "what if Daft Punk existed in the 1920s, were commissioned to score the film, and could only use what they had available to them at the time?" 😂 I'm psyched!

Again… please slip us some motifs and we can throw some sketches into the time required to get all the coordination work managed.

  • @McD don't worry, @Synthi is a music engineer and will do an excellent job on mixing and mastering, as he did with Vampyr 👍

  • Ha, my ploy to fool you into thinking that I actually know what I’m doing has obviously worked @McD 😊
I’m in if you need an extra body…
… just give me time to persuade @azul3D_Apps to add a ‘German expressionist science-fiction film’ setting to the Accompaniment Style options on PM 🤔

Sure! I can do that. :) I'm thinking Lydian mode. Dorian is a bit cliche. Ionian is too happy when I want to be mysterious and serious (oh god, those words rhymed in such a cringe way 😂).

Your task, my friend, is to pick a key for me to whip out something in.

    Good to know.

John Williams likes to start with a theme for each major character.

Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film's message is encompassed in the final inter-title: "The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart".

    Freder - protagonist
    Maria - saint
    Joh Fredersen

  • I've come across this version of Metropolis 1927.

That's been released by "Public Domain Presents". I've no idea if it's okay to use this version.

I created the bench category since some of us that did Vampyr before are giving a chance for other to try this one.
I'll put you confirmed then

  • The sheet is a sketch for ideas, and everyone is open to mess with it. Pasted the movie link @cyberheater shared

Cool, I just benched myself for now as it was looking pretty full on there… maybe some of the benched and confirmed could pair up if that’s desirable for the participants, I’ll still put together a set of noises so that’ll be a contribution of some sort if nothing else is possible 😺

  • What a fun project and thread. And I had no idea how the Nazis cut the film down because of 'religion and communism,' and I can't remember how long the version I saw is. I'm excited to see a full length version with ABF music.

  • Yes, please!

ah, great, let me know what part I should do then and when to start, I would also be open for collaborating if anyone's interested

Late to the game but just as well - too many distractions for me right now. Also I'm still "haunted" by misgivings for my contributions to Vampyr; I think I rushed it and now I keep seeing ways I could have done better.
I enjoy combining music/sounds to video so I hope in the future I'll be ready for the next time.
I look forward to hearing what everyone comes up with.

Yeah, I rushed mine too. I still did okay, but it's kind of tough for me to listen back to my contribution without somewhat cringing. 🤣

  • Count Me In

  • @sevenape sounds fun. ABF did a great job on Vampyr. I’m in if there’s a spot. If all spots are gone I could collab if you or anyone else hits a wall finishing up. Or if there’s no collabs maybe those late to the party can skim through the whole thing when it’s finished and add some subtle transition stuff? 🤷‍♀️ No worries if none of that’s cool tho, I’ll keep eye out & jump in quicker on the next one :)

  • If there is still room in this gothic bedroom count me in.
I had to play a halloween character for Ikea once but not too scarry I came up with Noseferatu, same character with a huge Nose! lol
    Cheers

  • The following have been added to the spreadsheet

    piano39
    childofthecorndog
    Toastedghost

  • I would like to join as well.

  • I'd love to join in, except for 2 things:

    • I have absolutely zero free time at the moment. Life is very much in the way at present
    • I have no idea how to begin to work on a soundtrack, both in terms of creating anything that matches the "mood" of a video and getting things to sync up. If anyone could point me to some "how to be John Williams"-type info, I'll try to be ready for next time

Brilliant initiative though, and looking forward to what comes out of it

I'm going to try the Vangelis way. Get everything set up and watch the movie while my fingers does something

Hey mate. Not sure if you saw above, but I did ask you to pick a key. I'll be using Lydian mode. 😃

If it’s Lydian then do it in F Lydian to avoid the black keys for those without deep keyboard knowledge. They can fiddle around and sim for F as a tone center. The F to B interval would help create something other worldly and darkly emotive while the F to A or C pulse it towards the light. Try that folks for sure me 4-6 note mttifs and share some audio. Bernstein’s Maria theme uses these notes to great effective longing.

  • First time came together well with almost no collabing as to motifs, themes, scales etc from the vast majority of contributors, so don't worry too much about this folks, unless it's just something that you happen to want to do - in which case great. It's definitely not a requirement though, and I think the lack of it may have been an important factor in how well Vampyr turned out

Yeah, in my mind at least, it's something between @McD and I, and nobody else has to join in, lol. I'll probably come up with the motif later on today or tomorrow. :)
