Just had a look on YouTube and there are 100s of full length Metropolis movies uploaded going back over 3 years. I stopped looking after that.
I wonder why there're so many. Bizarre!
Anyway, I'm not saying it necessarily would get flagged, but we have no idea whether people are getting strikes or not. I just think that, given the serious nature of the repercussions for getting flagged, it's not a risk that those who have personal, ongoing channels, should take.
If someone knows the risks and is still happy to host it, great. But I don't see any downsides to setting up a new account just to host it. Perhaps i'm missing something.
Yeah, we can set up a separate account and we can still use our own YouTube or other social media presence to promote it. Post it in the ambient / experimental Facebook groups etc. It will still get less traction than if hosted on a bigger channel, but who cares really.
Seems like the way to go, to me. Perhaps there’ll be other members who think it’s worth the extra traction, and may be happy to host it. But until then, at least there’s some way we can get to watch and listen.
And, importantly, to do the live text chat while watching the premiere, which wouldn't be possible with just a Dropbox upload.
Here’s a couple of articles relating to the movie status:
https://www.plagiarismtoday.com/2016/10/19/copyright-and-metropolis/amp/
https://5mag.net/features/fritz-lang-metropolis-jeff-mills-public-domain/
So it looks like in the EU (but possibly not in every EU country, idk) the copyright doesn’t expire till 2046.
So what would that mean for a movie re-worked by an international team, hosted in a US platform, for no financial reward? I have no idea.
Shall we just pick another movie that is actually 100% public domain everywhere 😂?
We had this with Vampyr which is also technically still in copyright in some jurisdictions. I believe the ‘better to seek forgiveness than permission’ route is the one to go down. A channel set up just for the project, promoted from without, and taken down in the (unlikely) event that any copyright holder gives a shit. Just my two cents.
Yep
I never looked into Vampyr, just took it on trust all was good… following that though, I did more of a trawl through PD space, and found it all basically complicated. It seems like a good opportunity to learn about PD work legal status, that might be of use to us now and to other people searching this thread in some future time, trying to figure out legal shit for a similar need.
I’m tempted to get in touch with the Murnau foundation who hold the rights. I think a persuasive argument to use a cut could be made to them, and I’m happy to do that. It might take a bit more time to get started though…
I think on the basis of our quite wide cultural diversity we can make a decent case, and we might get our hands on the complete cut as a result (148 minutes!) and then maybe after, we can have a crack at Faust by their progenitor 🙌
That would elevate this whole thing, @Krupa
Positive Energy Activates…
Yeah, there is a risk that they point blank refuse and we have to go full pirate radio, or they could just blank us which would essentially leave us in a similar position to where we are now. I guess it depends if people are happy to wait, these types of organisations aren’t known for rapid action tbh, and we could just go for it as is… the benefits of being involved with something like that are great though, even leading to proper funding down the road, at least recognised credit as well…
Or they might veto it, especially since according to the link above they are already working with Jeff Mills, an established electronic musician on an official new soundtrack release around now.
“ About a year ago, I was commissioned to create a new soundtrack for the full version by UFA in Berlin,” Mills told 5 Mag. “Since then I’ve performed a few live cinemixes of this new soundtrack and we have plans to release it in 2022.”
Mills’ latest score for Metropolis contains all new and original music. After “the last two previous versions made back in 1999 and in 2010, I thought it was time to revisit the film since so much had changed in the world and with people (in general). This new soundtrack is more emotional and deeper. I’ve even experimented with using the human voice in some segments.
“This is the biggest soundtrack I’ve produced to date and it took many hours of production.”
Still, nothing ventured, I suppose…
@Svetlovska Ah sugar, I missed that Jeff Mills bit, hmm
I’m down with the ask-to-find-out approach. It’s not like there’s any rush or deadline of any sort at any level here, yet.
Yeah the Jeff Mills thing definitely throws another spanner in the works I'd imagine. Then again, we could just point them at our Vampyr and show them how few views it has 😂
Legal status being an important part of music production, I’m genuinely interested to map out this terrain a bit. Better to know than not know… imo
At least then the group’s choices are guided by intelligent feedback!
Metropolis: Perfect film to score. Can’t wait!
I think we should just be a bit cavalier about it and make a new channel. As @Svetlovska says, better to seek forgiveness than ask permission and she was a police officer! Having said that I’m happy to go with the consensus. As @Kewe_Esse says, we aren’t working towards a deadline
Probably right to just go with it, maybe even use the complete version, maybe open a dialogue with the foundation alongside, and only reveal what’s necessary until/if they agree, otherwise plan A sticks and it’ll be hard to unravel at that point…
Crikey, thank you!
I switched to bench list because I can't give enough attention to this project, and people who will be doing the extra work deserve to be on the main list. Maybe if someone needs a grim guitar part I could join in.
Fantastic. I've thrown my name onto the sheet (ccwilsoN) and would love the opportunity to submit a piece for consideration. I love Metropolis and have wanted to put something together for some time now. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to give this a try. Thanks everyone.

I have removed my name on the spreadsheet and promoted senhorlampada into slot #5.
I finally watched the Vampyr project and have a much better understanding of this project.
I not in any way ready to produce 5 minutes of this musical genre. I don’t know the tools to make those textures.
I think listening to Vampyr should be recommended.
I was impressed by the flow from artist to artist in Vampyr yet exposing the skills of the individuals involved. I think that team should have priority and newcomers fill the sparse empty slots. You earned it.
Since there’s now a really long list maybe a second team could do the work and organize.
Maybe a team might like to attempt another genre.
I like the idea of Metropolis inspired creations maybe with accompanying visual content like a music video.
Vampyr had 14 composers and Metropolis will support about the same at 5 minute marks.
Maybe some one will step up for another grouping and use a 2 minute or so length with no specified genre that produces something more like a crazy quilt of ideas. The video editing skills and hours of work would be the key.
Looking forward to the work that results from this amazing film as a creative prompt.
I changed the access to commenter, so we can freeze the casting call
Later I can keep the editing open for some of you. As we go on defining roles and whatnots
I'm just trawling archive.org for suitable candidates, came across this little oddity
https://archive.org/details/1927-metropolis-experimental-outtakes-eugen-schufftan
Nice to know that people were doing weird AI style weird shit way back when. What a talented team were on that movie!
