What Control sources can Control 1 and Control 2 be in the Mod Matrix? Are these just Velocity/Mod Wheel/Keytrack etc or can they be LFOs, ENVs or such things? I had a look at the manual but couldn't see a list of what control sources Ctrl1/2 can be set to.

Seems that the modulation possibillites are quite limited in Tomofon when it comes to using LFOs and such as mod sources. I know there is an LFO in the Pitch and Depth sections but what about Filter for example?

They didn't put lfos in every tab, in order to keep cpu down. I also find this a bit annoying. To make the most of this, you may have to use external lfos. Parameters are exposed

Yeah, the manual addresses this as meant for external (Gen Purp) and this makes the matrix another strong modifier. I forgot to mention that one in my earlier post :)

It's just a pity because it limits the possibilities for preset designers

  • i bought it. I have no idea yet on how you import and assign samples to key ranges… i guess.. or whatever it does….
but I can see just from the envelopes that it’s gonna create some very unique and usable sounds.
    time to dig into it

    Watch the klevgrand vids!

  • Its just the voice ( sampled )

To the synth but maybe a merge.

    Dunno.

@HotStrange @sigma79 : I’ve discussed it in some detail on the Creations thread where I posted the piece I made with it. It’s not an immediate thing - the presets are underwhelming, albeit interestingly detailed, but it is deeeeeeeeep… and as I (accidentally) proved, if you dig into it with something you sampled yourself as a source, you can make some surprising things with it. I think once some third party sound designers go to town with its huge range of twiddly bits, we’ll start to hear what it can really do. I glimpse in it the kind of strange hybrid acoustic/electronic noises more left field artists managed to wring from Fairlights and Emulators back in the day.

That’s exactly what I want to use it for. Some weird acoustic/electric stuff. Thanks! I’m definitely gonna buy it, it’s just a matter of how soon. I’m thinking my next day off though 😎 slowly working through the backlog of recent releases I’ve wanted to buy. Money was REAL tight for a couple months so I haven’t been able to buy anything since last November.

    A nice patch, maybe ( saved )

    Using ipad screen.

    Is it a nice sound?

    Maybe its a Soma.

Would you buy an mpe controller?

    Edit. Way out of tune.

  • Its ok.

Its the same patch but a different octave.

  • Thinking about picking this up before the sale ends, but the feedback on the forum seems a bit quieter than usual for a new synth of this quality, and not a great deal of action on YouTube.

What's the verdict: game-changer, damp squib, or something in-between (damp game?)?

  • edited February 2023

Not sure. Just made a few patches ( not great but potential )

Dont know how to sort my own sounds manually

but think it does sound a bit organic but also a decent sound quality ( for samples ) With eq and reverb. Sounds quite good quality.

You make patches quicker than programming a synth and not rely on made synth presets.

I still need to explore. For sure it offers new sonic territory on iOS.
But just for the fact it does what no other iOS synth currently do, I would buy it at this price (which I did).

  • The matrix bay. Dosent save with patches. Meaning you lose every made patch?

No - totally wrong. There are two things to save. One is the audio model you make. Another one is the synth preset you make using that idiot model, which does of course save the matrix settings. This is a synth you absolutely must read the manual and watch some vids on to grasp. Klevgrand already have a few good tutorials up.

Guess its ok to add different presets to diferent model.

Then you have to resave preset. Then resave model with a matching preset name but different name than the original.

Or just save model and state save via host.

If you make changes to the model, then you will want to save it as a new model, and the app will ask you if you want to save the model before letting you move on to the synth tab. If you make various synth presets based on the same model, it will presumably just access the same model each time, but remember the different synth settings. Pretty simple really!

Aka the Roland approach. We’ve been dealing with this since the D 50.

  • I got this email today about some packs they’ll be releasing with more models if anyone is interested. They’ll work with the iOS version as well

  • Good thing you have to go to the their website to get these packs. Turns out I had 40% from Focusrite, quite surprising as it's years since I bought my Scarlett!!. Well, I take it 😇😁 Also understand now why the synth was so "cheap" when released. I hope they make this pack thing available for users to create as well. And finally, still no MPE.🥲

  • No mpe, but I'll tell you what, these packs, particularly the analog synth and tuned percussion ones, rock. These are MUCH more interesting to my ears than the majority of the factory presets.

  • Don’t understand the bit about a license? It says “these packs require a license ( bought separately)” …. But I have already bought Tomofon for iPad (?)

Well, I don't know if these will be in the appstore as IAPs. But currently you need to buy them from the klevgrand site. That means you need to register. Then you will get a license and can download them.

Ok. Bit frustrating that they’re priced in USD, since it’s a Swedish company. That means I , in the UK, will have to pay an additional 20% vat at checkout presumably….

    I'd imagine so, sadly

Actually, I presumed wrong. Clicked through to checkout stage and it said tax included.
Admittedly the tuned percussion demo gave me a bit of GAS, but I’m gonna hold off for the meantime…

  • Well I got all four for 17USD so that's pretty good.😊
Now, all the new (and old) models you can shift on various presets really makes it so much more - you can make a huge number of new presets just out of one preset. That's the thing that's so awesome with this one. Strangely the new models ended up in the user area but that's no big deal I guess.

Did you have a credit with Klevgrand? Why so low?

There's 50% off if you buy all four and for some reason I had 40% from Focusrite (I did mention that in my earlier post :) ) so, I got 40 on the 50 so to speak😁
