Synthwave presets… I think that I would look to emulations of 70’s & 80’s synths and drum machines. There are a good number of them, but some that come to mind are Moog Model D, Syntronik, iDS-10, iMonoPoly, and who doesn’t love Sunrizer? There are iOS FM synths, which can be hard to program but KQ Dixie has a lot of presets. Greoshred is fun, and your guitar background will help there. I recommend listening to YouTube videos - usually someone will go through enough of the presets so you don’t have to buy everything first. And of course a big factor will be how you use apps: AUv3 only or does your workflow tolerate older IAA only apps? You’ll have to judge the appropriateness for “live use” because there are too many variables there.

Awesome, I've checked a couple of these out and they seem cool, Sunrizer seems awesome. Not sure what it offers that I don't already have covered with other stuff but it still seems awesome. I have Gadget too.

I don't know enough about Auv3 or IAA to make a decision on that - for live use, it's mostly just reliability + quick accessability of sounds, ie maybe a favourites system or ways to quickly get to some standard sounds. I plan on using it for looping with - adding some beats, bass, pads, keys etc etc to my live act. Right now I'm a solo acoustic musician but the iPad opens up so much more to me than just being some dude on a guitar.

I'm not huge on ButterSynth.. seems more for people that are, well tbh, "into synths".

The presets all suck so you're forced to create your own sounds from scratch - cool for some, not great for singer/songwriter types that just want to get in, find a cool sound that works for their idea and move in with life.

Is there anything on iOS closer to maybe Ujam's USynth?

Something with better and more musical presets, and a more simplistic interface.

For reference, my fav synths on PC are Usynth (I like all of them), Pigments, Twin 3, Diva and Vital.
I have plenty of others but those are the ones I gravitate towards.

I don't have time to learn how to create my own synth sounds from scratch and I'm not interested enough in it for that either.

I have Module Pro and find there's some great sounds in there, same with Alchemy in Logic Pro. Just after another choice. Didn't like Synthmaster or SynthOne (or w/e it's called) or Pure Synth Platinum either.

If you can’t find good presets in Buttersynth or find the amazing presets in Synthmaster 2 (over 5000 presets), then it must be hard to live in this platform…

If everything is soooo much better on desktop, why are you then seeking stuff on iPad? Strange…

Not sure what the deal is with your attitude but anyway - I didn't realise Synthmaser and SynthOne were different apps when I wrote the post. On some level I must have, otherwise where did the names come from - but I thought it was one app that I couldn't quite remember the name of when I wrote it. I was referring to Synth One.

I purchased Synthmaster 2 a while back apparently, but I don't recall spending much time with it - I've just redownloaded it and will explore what it's got tonight.

With regards to everything being better on desktop - this isn't a perspective I hold.

I love using the iPad, can't wait to get a Macbook Pro or Air, so I can shift everything I'm doing to the Apple economy - I understand most of what I use (all?) is available on MacOS but not on iPad.. ie Arturia's Pigments, U-He's Diva.. etc.. these companies have other products I love as well, it's a shame they're not on iPad but I do plan on switching my PC out for a Macbook at some point (or a Mac Mini) and leaving the PC stuff behind.

It’s a pretty obvious reason why big & popular software company in music making is avoiding iPad…

The old tradition that everything on iPad will/would cost 1/10 of the price of the desktop equivalent, there we have the problem…

Gladly now is that the prices on iPad music apps have raised to a more “normal” price, although several software companies has hard to a break even situation…

Modartt and the release of Pianoteq v8 on iOS/iPadOS is a step in right direction - it cost 129 dollar and can be upgrades for yet another 258 dollar, and also cross platform license, good!

With Logic Pro for iPad and iPad Pros being crazy powerful, I think we'll see more big names getting their stuff on iPad, at higher prices than like 1/10th of the cost elsewhere.

Hope they get on board anyway.

I just picked up Baby Audio's BA-1 on iPad and feel like it's "problem solved" on the synth front. Love it.

If you have Synthmaster 2, it includes a pretty sizable library and has a ton of presets available for purchase.

But really, since you said you like Twin 3, get it. The money you spend on it will count towards the bundle if you want the bundle later.

Nah, just doing what i enjoy ;) When i see app which deserves my time, nothing can stop me :))

Right there with ya my friend. BS is utterly fantastic.

I don't care if it crashes Logic Pro (is this still the case?) but I don't like that it crashes when using the Wavetable editor - how could this slip the beta testing?!? 😳😢

I haven't had that happen in the wave table editor...yet...and i have tried hard to get it to but it's now crashed everytime in AUM. At first I thought it was because I was creating new sounds whilst in AUM. So I closed it and started again, only this time I did no more than change patches and it still had a melt down!

Oh and it crashed AUM because I adjusted the volume slider one time.

I am still having tremendous fun in stand alone though so I am still glad I purchased.

It would be helpful to the dev if you contacted him and provided crashlogs (they can be found in the iOS Settings app by searching for Analytics ) and a description of what you were doing. @dendy can probably tell you how to reach the dev.

try slide up with finger on gray area at left or righr corner of app (i guess your screenshot is from standalone app) … the bug here is actually that you see normally keyboard at all - it should be invisible comoletely and appear just on slide up .. this is because of some other screen ratio, we haven’t had this iPhone for testing, so nobody saw screen in that state - will forward your screenshot to dev

If you have Synthmaster 2, it includes a pretty sizable library and has a ton of presets available for purchase.

But really, since you said you like Twin 3, get it. The money you spend on it will count towards the bundle if you want the bundle later.

That's awesome that the money spent on Twin 3 goes towards the bundle.. I'll pick it up.

That's great, thank you for making it. Really gives an idea of what Buttersynth shines at.

This is how standalone appears on

    iPhone 8 iOS 16.5.1

    Keyboard is unusable

try slide up with finger on gray area at left or righr corner of app (i guess your screenshot is from standalone app) … the bug here is actually that you see normally keyboard at all - it should be invisible comoletely and appear just on slide up .. this is because of some other screen ratio, we haven’t had this iPhone for testing, so nobody saw screen in that state - will forward your screenshot to dev

I actually don’t mind this “bug” at all, it makes testing patches in standalone a lot easier than having to slide up every time - granted, you need leprechaun fingers to do it but it works for me

  • anyone got experience with buttersynth in cubasis 3? is it crashing?

  • Hi @dendy : I’m having issues with Buttersynth and patch saving in NS2 when saving the patch into NS2’s own patch library:

I have 2x instances of Buttersynth (I’m not sure if having 2 is significant?):

Instance 1: save it’s patch in NS2’s patch library. Result: Buttersynth’s interface immediately refuses to load and the track it’s on is now silent. To correct this, select a patch from another synth then reselect the Buttersynth patch you just saved. Result: Buttersynth’s interface loads and the patch correctly loads…

… except now Instance 2 sometimes “forgets” its patch and plays its default patch, or sometimes its track is silent and its interface won’t load, or sometimes its fine. So, to correct this reselect its patch from the NS2 patch browser and keep your fingers crossed that both instances remain correct because correcting Instance2 can sometimes cause the issue to occur all over again in Instance1.

I also find it hit or miss whether both instances load correctly when opening the NS2 project.

I don’t see this behaviour in any other synth used in NS2 though.

Have you seen this behaviour at all @dendy ? You being an NS2 & Buttersynth power-user?

I’m on iPhoneXR, iOS v 14.8 if that helps?

    Many thanks 🙏😊

  • I’m getting regular crashes in AUM after 10-15 minutes of usage

    @attakk

hm, absolutely not having such issues on my iPhone Max XS, iOS 16.5.1 .. tried it again - everything perfectly smooth, works as expected, no crashes whatsover

check for some crash logs eventually sent them with short description of problem to [email protected]

when NS loads default patch instead of what was there before it means that plugin probably crashed and NS then reloaded it … NS by defsult loads last project autosave buy you shouls be able to load it from
last previous manual save, which may be OK

tap “Versions” an choose which saved version to load

  • Thanks @dendy . I wonder if it’s iOS specific then 😢

I have just found another issue: I have attempted to bounce out Buttersynth’s output to a wav file using NS2’s excellent Mixdown (soloed tracks) feature - however NS2 reports everytime that the exported file is silent.

Again - have you experienced this @dendy ? I’m exporting at 48k (same as the hardwear rate)

I can work around it by inserting 4Pocket’s excellent MTR on the track and recording it into that, then use the NS2 Mixdown option (if I wish) playing MTR’s output - but it would be nice not to if I could.

    Many thanks 🙏😊

it may be but if you gather some crashlog files Arto may investigate it and find some solution …
Eventually he can then give you beta access so you can try it

looks like it crashes during export :-( any chance this setting helps ? It inserts delay before Ns starts actually rendering to get plugin enough time to load:

for me rendering works in all rares, even 96khz seamlessly so it may be iOS version related issue

I have that load setting set @dendy - I will try with a larger size of time though.
