Thanks Gav. Just the advantages of having a GREAT Wife!!

Humm ... I have a GREAT wife. Now all I need is a WEALTHY one. 🧐

  • @Gavinski don’t I have to choose two packs in order to download?

Anyone try Steinway B v Steinway D? I bought the stage version thx to @Montreal_Music s group buy 15% off. Sign up if you’re purchasing.

Mike, you can demo everything yourself. No need to ask anyone's opinion really, as you can try them all, the timer in the demo version allows you to go up to 45 mins at a time as long as you press the 'rewind' button enough times.

But maybe he wants to share opinions 😉
Let’s go… I have bought the Stage version with the 15% discount but haven’t chosen yet the 2 instrument packs. For now, my favorite grand piano seems to be the Petrof Mistral. In the Petrof pack, you also have the Ant 275. So 2 grands in the same pack.
Some packs have presets not available in other packs :

    • “hybrid” for both Steinway D (morphed with a vibraphone)
    • “bowed” for NY Steinway D and some others
    • “bass/piano” split

So different kind of sounds not accessible otherwise with another single pack or only the Stage version.

The Steinway D pack seems to be the best value for the money simply because of the “hybrid” preset which provide a totally different flavor.

No, download first the free iOS app and test extensively the different instrument packs.
Once you have decided, activate your license by clicking on “restore purchase” in the options menu and choose your 2 packs.

Log in into the Modartt website. When you click on your account you have a link to download the software and they will ask you to choose your 2 packs. Choose carefully because you cannot change your mind once it's selected. I think it's easier to do this process with a computer and not a phone or an iPad.

I also bought Stage at 15% discount and prefer the Petrofs so far. I was trying to like the Steinway Ds for the value/versatility aspect, but am leaning toward the Bechstein. My Kurzweil PC4 has the Steinway sound covered anyway.

Yep! Some instruments are complete in the demo mode like the toy piano. I like the toy piano.

As someone mentioned, it was really difficult to select only 2 packs. What did you choose ?

As I compared instruments I started to realize I just wanted them all.
As I compared Standard Editing I realized I wanted to control Envelopes and Pro has that.

There’s a Studio level that makes these wishes come true for $899. Basically, you get 17 more instruments for $500 above the Pro level which gets you 5 of them.

Studio gets you more instruments for $29.41 each.

As a Pianoteq desktop stage user, I am grateful that I don't have to re-purchase anything. Definitely expensive if one is just purchasing for the iOS ecosystem as the pricing is extremely high based on other offerings. However, it looks like they did a great job of porting the desktop version and the customization options are second to none. They do have sales frequently so if you're on the fence might be useful to sign up for their newsletter and wait for a sale.

Agreed. I've been a Windows Pianoteq owner for years. It's great to be able to access all previously purchased instruments in the IOS app. Not for everyone, as it is expensive if you're building your Pianoteq library from scratch.

To my ear as a jazz pianist, it's the best virtual piano out there. Noteworthy, I can tell no difference in sound quality for IOS compared to Windows.

  • Modartt did a great job by how they released Pianoteq 8 on iPad. Free to download, so you can try it extensively with every different instrument, and the prices are the same as on desktop. Desktop users with a license don’t have to pay, and if buying from within the app (via the App Store), the license can be used on desktop, too. Although the demo limitation with some notes not activated is annoying lol. Nevertheless, I think it’s worth the price. There are many more expensive music apps for iPad already. Look at IK Multimedia for example. Lurssen Mastering console needs two IAP to work completely. Costs you 200 bucks.. iPad music production is the future. And the future is now!

Short term, it’s the only way to get a significant discount. I signed up for the 15% group discount but chickened out on Pro and asked for a Standard because there were too many reports that Pro was a waste of time and only for studio geeks. BUT THAT WAS BAD ADVICE. “Note Editing” uses drawing curves and the UI is excellent. The change in sounds and the options provided are impactful. There’s NO ADSR like control but there is an “Attack Envelope” but no obvious decay… most pianos are sensitive to Note Off so decay isn’t essential. I’m getting some brassy sounding Presets.

  • Well, @McD that advice wasn’t figuring you in… was it?
@LeesKeys do you prefer the Steinway D over the B? They do sound different.

  • @LinearLineman said:

Nobody ask for my taste, but I will share it anyways :)

It's 100% subjective, but I prefer Steinway D over the B because I prefer sound that are more clear (bright). Do whatever you want with my advice, Let me know what you choose.

Have you tried out the German pianos? I liked them more than the Steinways (which do sound good but are a bit bright to my ear).

I ended up getting the B over the D. Though that Bechstein sounds VERY good.

  • @espiegel123 i’ll give them a try. I’m used to the American Steinway sound. There would be Hamburg Steinway, I’d imagine.

    @Montreal_Music , that’s odd, no? I thought the B would be brighter.

  • I did the group buy, and now I am losing my mind trying to pick my two pianos. Part of me wants to pick two different acoustics. Part of me wants to pick an acoustic and the MK. Part of me wants to pick up piano and one of the other instruments?

Maybe I will never decide and never use my stage license!

You should try the demo. You will be a better judge than me! The Model D is longer than the Model B so I think the sound is brighter. But it's just my impression. Like I said, you will be a better judge than me.

I'm sure there is the answer in the thread, but to save me some time, can someone tell me how the license works with iOS? I means, I have 3 slots to activate Pianoteq 8, but does that mean that I cannot use it on my 4 iPad and 2 iPhone? Or it's 1 activation per account and you can use the app on any of your device?

    So 3 slots = 1 Desktop Windows + 1 Macbook + 4 iPad + 2 iPhone?
    1 slot for Windows
    1 slot for the Macbook
1 slot for all my portable devices (iOS)?

    Thanks

Anything you buy will work on any device you own. The rights are just tied to your user account at Modartt.com.
The 3 instruments you license will be available on every device that you install PianoTeq on: IOS (iPhone or iPad), Mac (Intel or M1), Windows, Linux (may just be Raspberry Pi… not sure).

Buy it once and use it anywhere. To sync your purchased apps you use the “Restore Purchases” button on the top of the Options/Instruments page.

From this perspective, it’s more cost effective. The Mac and Windows users are going crazy to find out their iPhone and iPad can install everything they own for free.

There will be an upgrade fee when that happens sometime in the next year or so but there will be new features to encourage you to stay current. The current version will just keep working. I have only had one bug so far… the keyboard on the app screen went dark on me and I needed to re-start the app.

I will add one more thing. Activations on desktop hardware are machine-specific. If you want to move an activation from one piece of hardware to another, you will have to deactivate the first piece, and from then on, it can never be reactivated on that piece.

This is meant to keep activations from proliferating in the wild. The intent is so that when you upgrade your computer, you can move the activation since you’re getting rid of the old computer.

Note that you do NOT need to have the old hardware handy in order to do this. It’s all done online.

Also, remember that this applies to desktop installations only. One activation works for all iOS devices, and always will.

I somehow knew it wouldn't be long before McD would be talking himself into getting the studio! If necessary you can add another level of self-convincing by thinking how much it would actually cost you to buy all these real pianos. Well then you've just saved yourself millions of dollars by getting Pianoteq Studio! But yeah, at lesst it helps you avoid the agonising choice of which ones to choose. Just get the lot, lol
