I wanted to keep the values white to make them easier to see
Tried various lighter green shades but stuck with the white for the sake of clarity.
What's your opinion? Is it worth giving users full control to pick the colours to design their own themes?
Yepp, I think it's worth it!
Until this color editing thing popped up I was using the classic Mela 1 theme which I found to be a bit too bright.
So now with customized and a bit more muted colors it causes less eye-strain which is always good
Thanks for the feedback.
Here's what I'm thinking. I'll add the "White" theme as one of the presets. And the "Custom" one, and when selected the theme designer will appear, probably just inside the settings (rather than in the toolbar). And the user who wants to create their themes will be able to. And they can back up their themes (if they have multiple) by copying the colours into a text file or notes or whatever. And pasting themw they want to switch to another.
I have a feeling people will start asking for the ability to save and load colour themes, iCloud etc. which are big tasks. But I think the above should suffice.
As long as You keep it as a simple copy & paste operation only I would not worry about that too much.
It's almost too easy to hit the copy icon and go to notes.app (or any other text-editor) and paste it in.
But I guess some 'error checking' could be put in place in case the user has something weird in the clipboard when pasting...
Keep up, the good work 👍🏻
I love the Matrix movies but still haven’t seen the new one. How did you like it? I’m planning on doing a full rewatch of them, including the animatrix movies and then working my way up to them.
That's wonderful news, thank you very much! ❤️

I’m kind of a blind follower of whatever @Nikolozi said regarding NFM, so I never bought it. Waiting to be swallowed by Mela. I’m already emotionally tied with Mela3, and happy that the developer promised to keep this synth updated.
Does this update of NFM 1.2 mean that it will be maintained in future?
Of Course I bought Mela 4, my fav. color scheme is ‘Mela 2’. It's so good looking, like from a galaxy far away. Can’t wait for the customization option.
If I have an app on the App Store I will at least maintain it. This means I'll do bug fixes that arise from the OS updates or someone discovers some significant issue that needs to be dealt with. NFM had problems with state saving in Logic Pro for iPad, so I had to fix it. Additionally, back when the first version of NFM was released, in 2017, there were very few AUv3s and preset import/export was super low on the list of things most users wanted. I felt that that functionality is so significant these days that I decided I had to add it to NFM.
But what I said remains true, full focus is on Mela. And it will eventually have a set of modules that will be able to do all the things NFM does and much more. You can already kind of do some of the things with the FM Operator and Pitch Ratio (v4.1) modules in Mela 4. You can chain the operators on a lane, an operator can self-feedback. Can't send feedback from one operator to another just yet. The FM4 preset in Mela 4, is kind of a small demo, it doesn't use the Pitch Ratio module yet, and uses Relative Ratio instead because the preset was created in v4.0. And of course no polyphony yet in Mela. Plus the simplicity of NFM's Algorithm view makes it desirable for some users. But hopefully, I can come up with something that can be a good alternative in Mela. I have a few ideas, but they are still not fully developed.
Thank you for your support. I do feel everyone has their favourite theme, which is great. And I've come around to the idea of letting users design their themes. Mela 4 themes page is coming soon: https://nikolozi.com/mela/artist-themes/
@tja do you have a version of your theme that you want me to post here? https://nikolozi.com/mela/artist-themes/
Here's a demo of how this will work:
I was able to reproduce the crash. I'll investigate.
Thank you very much for your reply. I completely understand why people love NFM and I’m going to buy this synth too. If nothing, just for the sake of the operators matrix and ability to feedback on each other. I suppose that your plan probably was to deprecate this app, but it looks like that the fun base is growing and NFM is here to stay.
For Mela4 I need a little bit more time and practice to be able to give any reasonable feedback. Only what I noticed so far is when scrolling lanes on occasion unintentionally changing settings on xy pads. Constantly trying to find that undo button. Evolution of Mela is fantastic, I can’t wait to see what is next.
Ok, that crash fixing turned into a massive change in code, not complaining though. Mela 4 now properly supports P3 wide colour gamut, previously it was sRGB. That's why you were getting crashes, there was an issue with conversion between the colour spaces.
What this means is that existing RGB colour sets are interpreted as P3 instead of sRGB. And now if you check out the built-in themes in (v4.1) build 96 the colours are a bit too vibrant and over-saturated. I'm planning to convert those values to P3 but thought I'd release it in the beta build in case anyone has some opinions on them.
@Samu check your matrix theme with the latest build and see if you want to tweak it, otherwise, I can do the conversion to P3 from sRGB hex for you.
🧡
It still is the plan, but not sure when that will happen.
Cool, take your time
The best way to scroll is to always drag the module's sidebars, where the title is... They are wide enough to meed the iOS UI guidelines. But yes, the undo/redo is needed badly.

@Nikolozi, please don’t kill me, but I must ask , did you consider separate color schemes for major groups like; generators, processors, MIDI, …? Or at least lane types, will help allot.
That would be a total nightmare for 'color blind' users...
...but I'd sure love to see a way to scale the UI which would be super handy for larger patches.
Was talking about custom color groups, color blind would have its own scheme, and you would still be able to have ‘Mela 2’, ‘Mela 3’ or some other custom monochromatic set.
Don’t judge my mockup, it was a quick and dirty way to point out what I’m talking about.
+1 to this request.
I LOVE the new theme options, and being able to differentiate between the type of lanes, visually, would be a help to me.
I love it too
If @Nikolozi is in trouble I will happily jump and donate. Already decided a long time ago that I will support him in his future work. Even if I’m using primarily Mela3 and certainly will stay at it for a long time. Hi is on my list of dozen developers I’m going to endorse and support as long as I can.
So, that Jar is approved! 😇
Yes, I have
I think having different colours for different types of modules makes more sense, otherwise an LFO module, for example, would have a different colour depending on which type of track it's on.
I think more than colours, we need other types of visual indicators to distinguish the types of lanes and types of signals each module is processing. And adding colours to further enhance these things is probably a good idea. However, I think some of these decisions can be postponed, as things are still evolving a lot and don't think committing this early on would be beneficial. Maybe once there are 80-100 modules (currently 42, so half way there) and polyphony supported, it will be clearer what sort of colouring would make sense.
I had a Tip Jar built-in Mela 1 and Mela 2. But it didn't work out, more effort was put into making that feature than the tips I got from it. Ultimately, I think people want something in return, at least some sort of recognition that they are contributing. Like maybe extra features, or something different, maybe the ability to choose a custom theme . In which case we are back to in-app purchasing land. Then why make a Tip Jar feature, why not just offer "advanced" features as a premium? And I'm hesitant to add in-app purchasing.
Anyway, I found it was taking up space in Settings and I removed it to keep a cleaner look. Don't think app tipping is a good way to make a sustainable business.
haha, I'm not in trouble. But currently, Mela is not a sustainable business. Working hard to turn it into one. Hopefully, Mela users see that it's a worthy investment and keep seeing the regular feature-packed updates I continue to deliver.
The best way to support me is to spread the word and keep buying my apps And many of you have been, so thank you 🙏
Hey all, thought I'd give you a quick update regarding some of the UI design discussions we had on this thread. I just released the Mela 4.3 update with lane UI redesign. I still consider this work-in-progress, by that I mean, it will likely evolve a lot as lanes gain more functionality (on/off, renaming etc) and based on the user feedback. But I think it should make the UI hierarchy a bit clearer.
Here's a quick YouTube demo:
For full details about the update check out my blog post:

Feel free to ask me any questions or provide feedback. Cheers!
@Nikolozi
This is MAJOR update ... it moved it into completely new level ! Now i like it !
🧡
@Nikolozi honestly Mela should have been 2 apps. Midi module and a synth. I’m not saying this as a critique but as an acknowledgement of how much you’ve put into it and how stupidly powerful it is.
TL;DR with Mela you get TWO modular apps in one
