So what’s the story with Sample Alchemy in fact being Samplr?

I've been screaming about this since the first screenshot was shown, and nobody paid attention despite Samplr being so highly regarded. It's absolutely nuts that no one cared.

Maybe you both missed my reply?

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well, haven’t seen it mentioned by anyone since release?

It’s got similar scrubbing, arp etc. functionality to Samplr.

    Used it twice. Crashed twice.

Nah, I did read it Monzo, just was at work and couldn’t react.

Anyhow, I’m trying to see for myself but it’s a fourth time I’m opening the app and clicking download content, putting the iPad down, opening it again after an hour only to find nothing’s downloaded.

I guess they want me to sit and watch the full wash cycle to develop a bond with the software.

I love it. Maybe the most powerful synth in Logic in terms of design. Even with mixer record loop

You call it a synth. Does it mean it isn’t as close to the original Samplr? I mean in terms of ‘playing the wave’ with your fingers?

It's close to original Samplr, but with a more options. Instant magic! And so lightweight on the CPU. I didn't have any crash or lag.

It has a lot of similarities to Samplr, but stripped down UI-wise.

I just had a quick play, and for the first time it hasn’t crashed, so progress here!

  • @monz0id how do I get to the Sampler Alchemy? I’ve been looking everywhere and can’t find it and really don’t want to RTFM 😑

In the manual explains how....but it is supersimple

It’s in the Instrument list, under Samplers.

When you hit the + button to add a track, select the three dots on the MIDI option, then patch/instruments > Instruments > Sampler > Sampler Alchemy

  • Finally traded in my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen 2 go iPad Pro 10.9 Gen 3 128Gb (M1 processor). Cost me more then I wanted to but it is what it is.

It's taken ages to do the restore and I'm currently installing the latest OS.
It's bonkers to consider that I might be more powerful then my MacBook Air M1.

Looking forward to join the Logic Pro club shortly.

you can also just drag an audio file (sample or loop) onto an empty track header, it gives you a choice to create sample alchemy or quick sampler or DMD with that sample

  • Thanks guys @monz0id @OnfraySin @sonicreef finally found it.
It feels like going from Ferrari to a tractor. Samplr is definitely more of a player’s app. There’s other scrubby granular apps but none so far can touch it. Maybe there’s still a chance of it going AU after all. 🤞

  • Finally downloaded Logic. Looks lush.

Does anyone know how to download all the content at once?

Only given it a superficial look-see. It's unlikely to be a total replacement for OG Samplr, despite it having similar modes. It does allow some interesting interaction directly with the waveform with up to 4 different start points. I was easily able to drag an audio file from Logic's internal browser and start manipulating. I think it's a bit more sensitive to the source material and not so forgiving as Samplr. Either that, or the modes just aren't acting as I'd expect them to be.

There's also a nice feature that allows short automation gestures to be recorded and played back via the keyboard.

Suffice to say I'll need to read the manual and spend some more time with it. But I think i got a little more out of it than from what I saw in various videos I saw ;)

  • And then I scrolled up, and saw beneath ;)

So it seems each of the 4 playheads can have it's own setting that change depending on which play mode is selected, whether that is for loop length, jitter etc. So the play mode is where the Samplr exerts some influence. Down below it's possible to work within either Granular, Additive or Spectral, though it seems whichever is chosen, all of the 4 heads operate within that mode.

I doubt I'm explaining it very well. But i already got some pretty whacky shit out of a vocal sample.

I'll leave it there, till I know more.

  • Marcos Alonso the original dev of Samplr has been working at Apple for some time now, I guess we know now what he’s been up to ;)

  • So the first thing I’ve tried in Logic has failed so far. I can’t get velocity keyboard, or Geoshred to control SWAM instruments. There is no response in SWAM when using Geoshred or Val as a midi effect. Has anyone else been able to get auv3 midi effects to work?

Tap on “Sound Library” in the browser on the left hand side.

Then “Manage Packs” in the top left corner.

Then you should see a “Get all” button (14.x GB) at the top of the list.

I’m using GeoShred Pro to control SWAM apps fine here.

Yes, I am using the midi out on Geoshred. I am using the same settings I use in LP, Cubasis and AUM with no issues. I think I am probably doing something wrong with the setup on Logic’s end. I am adding Geoshred as a midi effect before SWAM (midi effect + SWAM + audio effect) on the plugins menu. Is this the correct place, and are there any further steps I am missing?

That's where I have it. I'm also wondering if it is an issue between Logic and my breath controller. I use VK or Geoshred to play notes, while controlling expression with a breath controller. Works great in all the other iPadOS DAWs, but perhaps Logic does not support input from breath controllers. Still day one for me, so maybe I'll find something obvious I'm missing.

  • Very impressed with LP so far.

Am I right in saying that the Logic keyboard has no option to hold/latch notes? The sustain button does not seem to do this.

Edit: upon further testing, it seems to hold/latch for some instruments, but not for others.

Has anyone figured out if there’s a way to export just a region? Like if I have a bit of audio or a midi clip sitting in a region on a track, can I export just that little piece for use elsewhere? I tried to find a menu option as well as drag/dropping it into the Files app. So far no go.

No other than just tap on clip > cycle > selection (to loop song exactly to the clip), then solo track and then export ...

you can also dragndrop any clip into sampler and it drops it as sample loop but you cant it export out of logic any other way than using export

That’s a shame. On Mac you select any number of regions, then file-export-export (number of selected regions) as audio files. I haven’t tried logic on iPad so maybe that is in there. On Mac that’s how you’d do it.

Until iOS gets real file management I think that logic for iOS is going to be frustrating for simple tasks. I could be wrong, but for my use case with logic it would be.

Oh, and the default shortcut for setting a cycle to the length of a region on Mac is cmd-U, so if you are using a keyboard with your iPad that may be true on the iOS version as well. That would make it a little easier to set the cycle exactly to the region boundaries.

I know I don't post here regularly these days but the launch of Logic Pro on the iPad obviously had me as expectant as the next iPad musician. However, I had family commitments on Tuesday, so I didn't get to take her for a spin until yesterday.

Shortest review ever, it isn't Logic Pro for macOS - glory be that it isn't Logic Pro for macOS. I'm amazed at how much of the Logic Pro 4mac is included in the iPadOS version and long-story-short, it's stonkingly ace. The fact that the official docs are nearly 1000 pages long says what a thorough job Apple has done.

To get the real skinny on Logic Pro for iPad, check out the ever reliable Peter Kirn over on Create Digital Music for his pleasingly undersold 'first impressions'.

As polished the v1 release version is, I'm certain that Apple will be iterating at a rapid pace based on user feedback. If there are certain iOS audio tricks that appear to be missing, I'm sure they'll appear at some point over the next six months or so.

The next question is whether Logic Pro for iPad will be good for the iOS music ecosystem. As much as it's too early to say, my gut instinct is yes, and for a number of reasons.

1.) There's a multitude of desktop DAW users out there that have sneered at iOS audio applications (their loss). Those musicians will hopefully now view their iPads not only as consumption devices, but as flexible creation devices too (something most of us have known from the get-go).

2.) Plugin developers that only publish desktop AU's will hopefully be convinced that iPadOS is a profitable platform.

3.) The other iOS DAW developers will have to seriously up their game and that's good for all.

4.) The fact that Apple is providing so much for so little will hopefully keep the price of premium iOS audio apps at a reasonable level (come on, $5 a month is remarkable value for what you're getting).

5.) Existing iOS AU developers have an excellent chance of reaching a brand-new audience.

6.) The investment required to create optimal experiences for iPadOS, iOS and macOS will hopefully make more sense to those same iOS AU developers. And some might hopefully make the jump to other plugin formats such as VST3.

7.) If existing iPadOS AU developers can increase their revenues significantly, they'll be more incentivised to innovate more rapidly, and we all win.

There's a lot of 'hopefully's' in that list, as none of us can predict the future, but I wholeheartedly view Logic Pro for iPad as the shot-in-the-arm the platform has required for a while now.

Anyway, that's my sixpence worth seeing as opinion is cheap.

Anybody tried use logic in PORTRAIT mode ?? Usually i have locked iPad screen rotation and most Logic videos are in landscaoe so had no clue it can work also in portrait mode.

I must admit - BIG difference. Like REALLY big. UI starts to be MUCH better that way ! It’s almost like they designed it primary for portrait mode instead of landscape …
