…and me. Why would you choose one design if you can have them all. Hopefully this one has a UI randomiser!

It’s out now so what are people’s initial thoughts.

So the first thing I tried is a button sending CC. And then run immediately into a problem:
I make the button, I can assign a particular CC, in this case CC 12. But then there's no way I can find to add a value to that CC12. ??
I tested using midi monitor and it works sending out a value of 127. But why can't I assign a different value?
In the button editor under function there's a drop down menu item labeled Data but it says n/a and doesn't work.

So being flummoxed immediately. Wouldn't we want to be able to make a button that sends a particular CC value?

Ahh ... you can do this if you use the Send Bulk MIDI function type. A little unintuitive and too many steps to set up, but it can be done. Thinking about it now, though, I can see why he did it this way.

I have worked out how to get controls to send MIDI to other controls in standalone, e.g. have a button turn on a light. I have to use something like MidiFire though to send the trigger note out of the standalone and back in again. Is there a better way that anyone has found to trigger controls from other controls?

I don't think this is possible internally except for selected functions such as setting audio clip playback volume.

For the LED thing, the closest I could get was to have two overlapping controls then use the button function to hide one that's in a lit state.

  • really digging this think so far. very very cool.
only things i would love to see added.
    1. the ability to pitch a wav
    file
    2. the ability to edit start point on a wave file
    3. the ability to select a loop region and have that play when button is pressed.

Does it have x-faders? Like horizontal faders?

It doesn't have horizontal faders. I'd hope that would be added too.
    ping: @4pockets_paul - just in case you're listening. 😉

Whoops. It does have two horizontal fader styles I overlooked in the Object Styles panel.

Good to know thanks! My usage case for this would be to control drambo, so of course we could use a x-fader. Also for the ui design, some sliders horizontal may let you fit more suff into the canvas without expanding it too much

  • Is there anyway to use the built in keyboard to trigger a button with audio in ?

It doesn’t look like you can do this directly between controls, you have to send MIDI out and back in again and then it works. A limitation to this seems to be that controls can’t be triggered using the same Channel/Port/Note combination. You can set two controls to respond to the same trigger but only one of them will consume the trigger. This somewhat limits the function - you can’t have one button trigger two samples, for example.

Where in my text do you see a complaint? 🙄 😂

Jokes aside though, I'm not sure I like his app politics of spitting out new ones very frequently and giving up (more or less) maintenance on the old ones. The very first app I bought from him was the other "build it yourself" named NuRack which has gotten no love for over a year. Well, no big deal I guess, it is what it is.🤷

  • This looks like something that would be super useful. Wondering how it compares to MIDI Designer Pro?

Yes, I think you are right.

I guess like many other iOS music app developers he is trying to keep his head above water in an oversaturated market with whatever strategy he can use... and the "make many clever apps with sales after a few months" strategy works for him.

With some of his apps I bought he added new features after the app was released at not extra cost. No IAP or anything. Full marks for that.

First Surface and I run into problems. Need one button to rule them all (I couldn’t resist). ;) What I’m saying, one knob to control more than one CC with different ranges and values.

It’s not a bug, just a proposition, because adding Mosaic to the equation defies purpose of Surface.

Edit: Just tested. Loopy Pro can do this without problem, I completely forgot how versatile this marvelous tool is.

  • edited June 2023

Although Loopy can also be used as a MIDI controller I like this a lot. But to be honest I would like to see something similar implemented in AUM. Just some sort of switch to get into a (customizable) performance screen and I would be happy to pay an extra fee for that.

  • @Gavinski said:
Loopy Pro is certainly much more beautiful. I'd love to see 4Pockets step up their UI / UX game. Maybe bring in a designer to rework all the templates. Great ideas but the aesthetics aren't quite there for me.

The cost of a decent UX designer could easily be the the difference between making a pittance and actually losing money.

  • In a perfect world the dev would collaborate with AUM, Drambo, Loppy Pro, etc, developers, and integrate this natively in their apps so we could get the UX and full resolution au parameters instead of stepped CCs. Can’t see it happening, though

What other surface tools apart from what’s all ready including would users find interested to use inside surface builder?

A big one for me would be a drop-down list (for patch changes, effect-type selection, etc.).

Also variables, and RNP/NRPN (with MSB/LSB ) support.

TB Midi stuff has all these.

  • "Added a new LFO function to a button, allowing it to send automated CC data."

Whoa, so Paul want to add internal modulation to surface, or I get it wrong? I don't have Surface Builder, wanna buy it next week.

  • hello, for those who have tried it, do you have a kind of snapshot/recall / save/reload preset, superbly used for live use?
    thx :-)
