I really love Just Piano (and all their other apps). Outside of Pianoteq, I think Just Piano is the best piano we have on iOS. And the price is fantastic.
Wow, that sounds really great. I still like Ravenscroft a lot but maybe it’s getting old compared to others.
I totally love Pianoteq and was really pleased that I could use my existing Modartt account for iOS Pianoteq.
I was a bit confused by seeing the other (iPad only) piano app that Genuine Soundware makes, though:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/genuinesounds-vol-i/id1636493927
Is Just Piano a selection of the samples from “Piano Edition” or are they entirely different?
I also very much like Pure Piano. If I didn't have Pianoteq I would mostly be using Pure.
Although sorry that wasn't much to do with Cello.
Cosign on Swam, for solo anyway. And yeah finger wiggling the vibrato on an MPE interface is what makes it work.
I wonder what is the best string section instrument, IE for a quartet of cellos voicing chords. My little research playing these new xinematix libraries I haven't seen any specific viola, cello, violin patches but the overall string patches in packs like Orchestral Strings and Slow strings do sound great just not cello specific. Thumbjam cello is surprisingly good for something so small and unlike Swam you can play poly for harmony. I never liked Logics strings, not compared to NI Session Pro, or Spitfire etc.
Haven't tried the Staff Pad IAP strings, didn't even know about them till this thread, but the fact that the IAPs are actually Berlin, seems likely to be the best, I may have to get that at some point when I'm feeling rich,. Sound on Sound mag https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/staffpad?page=2 also says StaffPad has IAPs for CineSamples and Spitfire and Tina Guo Cello but they don't seem to be mentioned on https://apps.apple.com/us/app/staffpad/id1442074103
sademoji. hopefully they are available in app, just not listed on that page is an oversight perhaps
Mini orchestra has a cello among other things , you can isolate that?
My go to for realistic cello is the GeoSWAM cello in GeoShred. The standalone SWAM Cello app has many more options from what I can see, but to me, the GeoSWAM version sounds so good, that I’ve never had a need, nor an urge to purchase anything else.
I honestly don’t think I’ll EVER need to buy another “Cello” app. GeoSWAM Cello = cello shopping done!
There’s a handful of other GeoSWAM instruments I feel the same way about also, and that’s the GeoSWAM violin, and my single most favorite iPadOS solo instrument of all time; my trusty GeoSWAM Tenor Saxophone 🎷
Now string sections where you’d have multiple string instrument ensembles, and/or full orchestra string sections, there may be better options, but for solo instruments, GeoSWAM is the way to go. This is all of course, in my personal opinion. I’ve made my recommendations.
FYI, SWAM Cello is capable of play polyphonic…
They are all in there, not cheap but very much worth it, in my opinion. This demos the different string libraries (use the links in the comment to skip between the different IAPs):
Darn, you reseted my research back to the starting position. 🫣 I’m using Velocity Keyboard and planning to purchase few SWAM bundles. This will be used and automated in Logic for iOS. So, do you believe GeoSWAM will be a better choice, then?
Edit: It defaults to mono, just changed that to duo in the settings, and it sort of works albeit the MPE is wonky, IE it does not do bending per-note, if you bend one it bends both, not poly and not proper MPE, but duophonic. at least that's what i've been able to get out of it.
I was under the impression that Audio Modeling (SWAM) had full orchestra apps on their development road map. I remember them mentioning something about that years ago (unless I am completely off base here).
Seems really complicated to have a SWAM plugin with full orchestra, physical modeled, or?
Why not take respective instrument (SWAM) and make an track stack to group it into a full orchestra…
Hav’nt tried yet how many SWAM instruments that can be loaded in Logic before stucking note or others peculiarly behavior…
FingerFiddle still most playable to me because of bowing interface and different sound depending on where on string playing
I found the software development roadmap I had remembered.
https://community.audiomodeling.com/index.php?u=/topic/24/a-rough-roadmap
See the note on 2023? “SWAM Ensembles”.
Ha! Interesting!!
What a big achievement to make a physical modeled Ensembles!
I have Pianoteq but I went with the Hohner collection and classical guitar, so Just Piano has become my go-to. Pure Piano is definitely still very good though.
Yep I love Pianoteq but when I did my unlock I bought the Hohner and Classic Guitar collections instead and am sticking with Just Piano for my Pianos. As well as Pure Piano for the uniqueness.
Imo, Just Piano is close to the quality of Pianoteq. Doesn’t sound quite as realistic but it’s more pleasing to my ears personally though I can see why one would prefer the other.
To answer your question (and I’m not quite 100% sure) but I think I read that Just Piano is indeed the pianos from the Genuine Sounds app. But with the other app you also get some electric pianos and DX pianos. Haven’t tried it but the demos sound great and if the piano in JP is any indication, it probably sounds great as well. Also I think JP has all the pianos from the GS app but you can only use one at a time. The other app has them all included to switch between freely.
I am also a fan of Finger Fiddle....sadly it never was further developed to the potential it has (just my meaning).
Otherwise SWAM it is. I normally prefer sample libraries because you REALLY have to use the right controllers and/or the right midi settings/automations plus the right reverb/spatialization to make SWAM really sound pleasing and realistic.
That is the thing. There are some awesome demos out there where it sounds amazing but i think it is really almost as hard as learning a real new instrument to play it the perfect way.
Something like Bohemian Cello (my favourite on mac) would be great to have on iOS but so far SWAM is the best option i think.
Oh and i really still think ThumbJam is very usable and especially it has still one if the best ways to control the sound in interesting ways.
So with samples you always have a style from the artist in there with physical modelling you could make it complete your own way but as said it is almost as you have to learn to play a real cello.
Good choices I also got the clav so I can do my best Stevie W impressions
I’m pretty sure that the piano samples in GSi Just Piano is NOT the same as in Genuines Sounds Vol 1…
Look at the sizes in both Model D and Yamaha C5…
I don’t have the GS so I can’t compare to Just Piano but it works the same way where you only download the sounds you want at the time. Only difference being you can download more than one in Genuine Sounds.
Reason I said I thought they were the same is because I read that on here and according to their website it’s built with the same WLF engine. It would be weird to me for them to claim both pianos were sampled and made with the same engine but then put 2 different versions of the same piano in each app. From what I’ve read, Just Piano is exactly what the same suggest. It’s Genuine Sounds but “Just Piano”.
Yep! I already have the GSI Clav so I mostly got it so I for the Pianet which is something I’ve wanted for a long time. I love Hohner’s stuff.
The samples in Just Piano is way bigger than the same models in GS vol.1…
What are the sizes of the samples in GS? It would be so weird to me to market them both as professional pianos made with the same engine and sampling methods only to add 2 different versions of the same piano in each app. Unless one is compressed more or something to lower the storage needed for all the sounds.
I have SWAM Violin and don't have a problem saying that on this thread as a bunch of people keep going on about Pianos.
I also have Swam Tenor Sax and Trumpet and they sound so much better than the Violin.
This is because coaxing the expressivity out of them feels easier.
I feel like I need to understand the Violin to a greater degree to get anything out of it.
I'd like to get a nice Cello too, I'm sure Swam has an excellent model, but I fear the same issue.
Many of the sampled Violins sound better with their baked in expressivity and articulation, and I'm wondering if I can develop a 'controller' in Mosaic to send some MIDI Ccs to Swam to add some vibrato and expression when I play a note on a keyboard.
So totally agree with comments above that Swam is probably the best but getting it to sound good is not easy without a dedicated controller unless you limit yourself to pizzicato :-)
And I've just checked the iOS sales thread (why didn't I go there first today), and it looks like Swam have a sale on... its a real dilemma now, I want a Cello sound but can't get anything decent out of the Violon, so is it worth the money to be frustrated again with their cello....
Yeah I enjoy playing SWAM cello and viola, but it's on Linnstrument and I have to practice the finger wiggling. Well actually it's not the finger doing the wiggling, the action comes from the elbow, like micro-waving (not to be confused with microwaving IE warming food!)
Someone on another thread said that Scaler 2 has a nice cello. I meant to ask them about it but forgot and now I can’t find the thread. I was surprised because I didn’t think it had any sounds, but I’ve never actually used it. In case anyone wants to see Scaler 2:

Sadly FingerFiddle is now pretty clearly abandonware, though thankfully it’s still useable. I wish the developer would sell it to someone who would want to keep developing it, or even just maintain it. It’s fine now but a few more iOS upgrades and it might not be.
I have all the GeoSWAMs and a number of standalone SWAMs. The standalones have more options, but the extra options’ utility is marginal for me. The real measure is how well you can play or compose. If you want to spend less money, the GS version is really just as good 98% of the time.
