  • Got strings bundle and have tested others. Can confirm that although faders move in app it has no effect on sound so still locked I guess.
I’m not sure how others are managing this..
I have the standalone swam apps on iPhone so maybe a difference to others there?

It works for me but I didn’t test on iPhone.

There is also NAADA Carnatic cello as a GeoShred iap. This one has a vivid presence for solo playing. I’ll try to make a demo tonight.

It has been a while since I tested. When I did there were at least some locked parameters that were exposed that did not have an effect when their values changed. So, it would be useful if there are ones that are working if people mentioned which ones were working for them. It may vary from plug in.

You’re right. The Naada instruments are somewhat overlooked, but they are all excellent. I’d recommend any of them.

  • None of the string bundle seem to respond to locked exposed parameters so would assume it’s same for other instruments.
Would guess that this is an iPad only trick.

I would be surprised if the device is the difference-maker. It would be helpful if someone that is having luck with locked parameters for the string instruments would tell us which ones are working for them and what the setup was.

I just checked and swam viola vibrato fade-in works in both my iPad and iPhone. Default preset was chosen. I cranked vibrato to the max. There was definitely a difference in the time it took for the vibrato to ramp up when I compared the minimum and maximum fade-in setting

  • Yes, I’m mistaken. Copied your test and worked. Wasn’t noticing before as didn’t have all settings pushed to max. Not something I’d usually do.
Would definitely agree with @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr that these are in the very subtle side of things, at least for strings.
    Thanks for suggested test 👍🏻

I am also a fan of Finger Fiddle....sadly it never was further developed to the potential it has (just my meaning).
Otherwise SWAM it is. I normally prefer sample libraries because you REALLY have to use the right controllers and/or the right midi settings/automations plus the right reverb/spatialization to make SWAM really sound pleasing and realistic.
That is the thing. There are some awesome demos out there where it sounds amazing but i think it is really almost as hard as learning a real new instrument to play it the perfect way.
Something like Bohemian Cello (my favourite on mac) would be great to have on iOS but so far SWAM is the best option i think.
Oh and i really still think ThumbJam is very usable and especially it has still one if the best ways to control the sound in interesting ways.
So with samples you always have a style from the artist in there with physical modelling you could make it complete your own way but as said it is almost as you have to learn to play a real cello.

The cello samples in ThumbJam were recorded by Zoe Keating ( https://zoekeating.com ), and her expression really made it special... still holds up after all these years. Maybe one day I'll do a more detailed version of just that.

If you have an expressive controller, using one of the modeled instruments (SWAM etc), is definitely the way to go though...

Another option to consider, though it would not be by #1 recommendation, is to use a good soundfont along with BS-16i or KQ Sampei, along with an expressive controller such as KB-1 Keyboard, Velocity Keyboard, or Xequence Keys (from within the iPad). Each varies a bit with different options for velocity sensitivity, MPE support, aftertouch, etc. The downside to soundfonts is that they can be quite large and need to load into memory, and it's not easy to find good ones. I mention this mainly for completeness of options that others may be interested in.

@sonosaurus +1 for all Sonosaurus apps. Still using them in 2023. DrumJam is also fantastic.
