Big Koala update 2023 out now

  • I’m guessing it’s a preparatory update before the big one in 1/2 weeks

  • I’m really praying for MIDI out & export midi. Using the note repeat etc and creating crazy sequences to then send out to drum machines/synths would be so tight!

Koala as a midi controller? I don’t see it. Supposed to be the other way around. BM3 has a virtually the same note repeat function and midi out though FYI

    I think that was mentioned…

Note repeat like in IM2 or wherever would be sweet.

It could be cool. Maybe if you used the recorded sequences in standalone sequence mode, so you can send it out to helium or whatever, then put koala in a host to be triggered, and expand upon the sequences. I don’t know, lol.

How is it supposed to be the other way around? Lol

Koala can work either way - though it only sends midi out from tapping pads. It doesn't send midi out from sequenced patterns. I'm pretty sure that feature has been requested more than once though.

I wouldn't mind the ability to swap from triggering samples to an triggering external instruments from time to time.

Hopefully this will be one of the features of the big update. We shall see. I love Koala as it currently functions. :)

If we can send midi out from the sequences we made in the app I would lose my mind lol. Koalas sequencer is capable of some wild stuff so sending that elsewhere would be super cool.

    I definitely agree. :)

The fade in and out is very hit and miss. That is so important on a sampler. That would improve the app immensely.

hit and miss in what way?

I've been sleeping on Koala sequencing, now wondering what "wild stuff" it is capable of? :)

I’m using Koala exclusively as a field recorder, but I’m excited for that ‘big’ update too! 🤩

I use Koala for noise, ambient, drones, etc. It can definitely get wild when you start messing with the pitch and tempos + effects.

    Thanks.

  • "Nice little feature in latest koala update - looping ribbon in piano roll, sorry it took so long to get to it!"

  • The first of the koala 2 updates is out for both iOS and android now. It’s the boring update (before the exciting one that should be out this week or next.)

I didn’t list the features because I wanted to not make too much hype about it. But it does have a few nice features.

    1) a looping ribbon in the piano roll - see attached video. Makes it easier to work with longer sequences. (Drag your finger along the top time bar in the pianoroll to activate, drag down on it to deactivate)

    2) advanced quantisation features - enable them in the EXTRAS settings page - you can set the quantisation level. You can also enable “LIVE QUANTIZE” which will snap the timing of each pad you press to the next beat)

    3) slightly enhanced look and feel, some drop shadows and refined borders. Not a feature but makes koala a bit nicer to look at

  • There’s nice little explanations in the settings menu now, which will be great for new users. And the ability to show filenames on pads will be great for anyone!

  • Not bad for a boring update ;)

Interesting sequencer looping feature, great for variation.. Hopefully the big update includes, save sequences, import midi.. Nice..

Edit.. with probability.. make it even more interesting.. Thanks..

Edit.. seems the looping does not remain when switching Seq pads… would be nice it it stayed intact… Or is it me?

  • As someone with ADHD and a bad memory, I am so excited to have file names on pads. Is there any way to see the full file name without going into the label menu - I’ve tried long pressing, etc. Also I assume file names won’t populate older patches?

BTW thanks for the update and your work on the next “big” update.

Koala is one of those apps that I know is great but almost never use. How do you access the piano roll view shown in this video? I only see the grid view, keyboard view etc, but nothing that looks like this.

Edit - never mind - found the answer here:

Double click on an empty pattern above the pads will open up the piano roll
