There's a wide variation in the level of response to different presets to MIDI velocity - some hardly vary at all, and others respond across the entire range from 0-127 and the change is easily audible. I can't comment on the MPE support, but I've tried using pitchbend and the modwheel with a couple apps including KB-1 and BeatHawk to send MIDI values while playing notes, and those do work. There's a section in the lower left pane called Articulation and the modwheel can be assigned to a number of different functions including Bow and Palm Mute and they produce some very nice effects. If one of the usual people doesn't cover that fully in a video demo, I'll create one myself to show it as well as the behavior of various instruments in response to MIDI velocity and pitchbend. I want to be careful not to jump to conclusions about this app before having sufficient time to understand the basic functions, so it might take a few days.
This is what you get when a dev only uses and tests with a mouse.
Horrible knob response. You can’t have both vertical and horizontal control and expect it to work.
Another 4 pockets app that is 50% done but for 200% price. I am happy to pay 18 euro for a app when the fundamentals 101 are taken care off. With these kind of flaws it does not matter how great it sounds.
Just commented. Thanks!
Yeah if you scroll reeeally slow it works fine but this definitely needs to be addressed.
Can confirm I also get non-optimal knob response when trying to slowly and steadily move from 1 to 100 and back down again, and keep repeating this several times without stopping. At a certain point there will always be a mad unexpected movement. I have emailed the dev, please do the same if you haven’t yet
How do you know that he only uses and tests with a mouse?
Trying again, more than non-optimal, these knobs are basically unusable. Definitely need fixing, surprised no beta testers pointed this out to the dev or that he didn’t notice it himself, tbh
Presumably because it works fine with a mouse but doesn’t with fingers?
Completely off-topic here, but how did you create that GIF? What software?
Nope - also doesn’t work very well with a mouse. In current incarnation, this is not a live tweakers synth
Definitely. Everyone email if you haven’t already. The app sounds excellent but this really needs to be fixed. I haven’t tried it with every knob but are you experiencing it with the knobs as a whole? I would imagine so.
All 4pockets apps that use knobs have this problem imo - I recently asked about it here - https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/57260/copperhead-vertical-linear-knob-mode - when Copperhead was on sale.
Totally agree that every app should have an option/setting to use vertical movement only, having all (vertical, horizontal, & radial) makes it impossible to control..
I’m not wasting my time testing every knob, lol. The ones I did test work like pants. It’s a major problem but can hopefully be rectified soon. Paul says you should be able to scroll vertically with no problems as long as you don’t start going diagonal in any way. But let’s face it, knobs are just one of those things that should just ‘work’ without any guidance, manual reading or tips required
@thesoundtestroom Maybe change the title so it's known it's been released.
@Pxlhg I have made it so😊
Layout and features seem to borrow quite liberally from Objekt by Reason Studios.
Indeed..
Definitely agree. I’m hoping it gets fixed because I do a lot of my tweaking live and would hate to have just spent $15 on a synth I rarely use because the knobs only half way work.
Since they are pros at this, thats probably > @HotStrange said:
Same yeah, sure it will get sorted but I'm a bit tired of bad knob control implementations on iOS tbh... So many apps, even ones by well established ios devs, fall at least a little bit short in this regard. For me there are a few behaviours all knobs should exhibit:
No changing value when you release your finger
Ability to see the numerical values when you move your fingers
Preferably, ability to jump to specific values by typing in a number
Totally smooth movement, no unexpected abrupt lurching
Ability to quickly and smoothly get to any exact given value that you wish to get to
Ideally, vertical slides for faster movements and horizontal slides for fine tuning
Not rotary, or at least give several options
just works without any requirement to read a manual to learn how to move things smoothly
There are probably others. Have I forgotten anything?
I think everything you mentioned is mandatory for me as well. Point #1 is absolutely infuriating when you encounter it. I’d maybe add double tap to reset to default positions. I use that one a lot and get a bit peeved when it’s not there.
Oh yeah good! Please keep adding to this list everyone, could be a useful guide for devs about what ppl expect
I'll also add 'big knobs'. Big knobs generally allow for finer tweaking easier. In am ideal world, for me, every app would have midi 2.0, I'd have a midi controller with absolutely massive endless encoder knobs, and all apps would be set up to play nicely with that. This would bring a lot of hardware people to iPad I reckon
I’ve been waiting for someone to release a fully feature Karplus-Strong app, and am really happy with this so far. Yeah, the knob thing is an issue, but is mostly a problem on something like that body filter, where the range is so wide. It looks like the values are quantized. Not really a big deal for this parameter, though. I don’t see a strong need to dial this one in so precisely.
But yeah… UX in general is always an issue. It’s one major reason I love the Bleass apps so much. We don’t need skeuomorphism, we need implementations appropriate to the technology.
Yeah... Even though this interface is less skeumorphic than some previous apps. Still, even though I tend not to like skeumorohism, I care much more about things like being able to dial in a knob value accurately, where necessary! Overall though, yeah, devs need to be thinking in terms of the touchscreen paradigm, not slavishly copying hardware or plugins from the desktop world. It's frustrating that so few manage that. Now that many devs want cross platform compatibility, unfortunately the days of many plugins having unique built for touch and thinking-outside-the-plugin-paradigm UIs are probably numbered.
I just like the words Karplus Strong.
Noone:
Me:
Kevin Karplus nowadays teaches Electronics to Biomolecular Engineering students, and advocates cycling.
Alexander Strong who invented the algorithm I don't know what he does nowadays.
Nobody:
Me:
Karplus? Strong

Me? The 13th Duke of Wybourne? Here? In a sixth form girl's dormitory? At three o'clock in the morning? With my reputation? What were they thinking of?
I can feel this thread getting derailed 🤨
That’s string theory for you…
