What happens when you send some highly expressive midi into this thing, like say the output of Geoshred with a lot of pitch variation as one slides between notes?
I know in GS, you can adjust the speed at which the note snaps to the relevant scale note in the GS tuning page. But how is that handled in Entonal? Is there a similar adjustment one can make in Entonal?
There is a trick when playing the lattice, which is kind of an accident from the implementation, but allows to hold notes:
Press on a point / note. Then drag your finger away. It will continue playing. Press and release the note again to stop it playing.
Hi all. A new update just got approved, 1.1.6, which fixes the Scala import issue.
More fixes and improvements coming soon. I think I will continue updating via TestFlight for the next couple of weeks to sort out the smaller niggles. I wanted to priorities getting the major bugs fixed and released before working on the smaller details, some of which might need user feedback to get right.
It's built to handle MPE - it was one of the early design decisions and it works very well - it interpolates the intervals of the scale between notes as you glide.
Fair point. I invited everyone on my email list and got 100 people signed up. But very little feedback. After I released it I discovered this amazing place. Really appreciate the level of detail and feedback you guys are giving.

Is it possible to enlarge the onscreen keyboard? If so, I can’t see how to, and if not, I would value that feature. Thank you. This is very cool.
No and you're not the first to ask about it. I also want to give the option of removing the keyboard (when in AUv3 mode).
I'm wondering whether the keyboard should just be bigger on iOS or if there should be button to set it to 2-3 different sizes.
I can’t seem to find it as an AUv3 anymore? Scala imports fine in standalone..
Ahh damn I now realise my mistake. I failed to add the AUv3 to this build and rushed the submission. Thanks for pulling this up, I'll get it resubmitted shortly! This is why I should be beta testing each release first!
I like the idea of multiple sizes. Sometimes I’m more interested in using my own keyboard or sequencer but having the option of a bigger keyboard within the AU itself would be helpful.
Ah, yeah that works and good to know. It's nice when exploring possible chords. One small issue though, if you keep the sound rolling and change scale and the dots appear outside a lattice/grid you can't turn them off and you need to go back to a grid where they match up. No biggie.
@elemental I tried exporting a Scala file out of Winsonic App and into Entonal Studio with no luck. Nothing appeared to be showing in my user section? Winsonic doesn’t have many up to date export options email seems best and Entonal Studio doesn’t appear to have “Open In “ option at present.
Noted, thanks!
Ok got it that’s a general bug I also noticed in the desktop version. Will add to the backlog!
Ok got it, I’m learning the intricacies of iOS file management!
The AUv3 should be back in update 1.1.7
I’d prefer the ability to set different keyboard sizes. Depending on exactly what you’re trying to play, which iPad you have, and the size of your fingers, one size does not fit all in the iPad world.
Ideally something dynamic where we can set a number of keys and it scales accordingly. And having some control over height is good too. But as that isn’t the main focus of the app, it doesn’t need to be ideal…especially if it plays nicely with apps that are focused on being a configurable controller.
@ronnieb I just tested this on an iPad mini, both AUv3 and standalone app and it seems to be working as expected. Can you please test the latest version and let me know if you still have an issue?
I've just added this feature with a new build in TestFlight
Sweet, thank you! Running chord progressions through this is great
Sweet! Excited to have a go with it, thanks!
I bought this yesterday because I like pretty apps, microtonal stuff, MPE and developers that communicate in forums.
I'll probably get the desktop version at some point too.
I’m curious - who here would like to have this available on iPhone?
I’ve been working on adapting the interface for the smaller screen area and it’s surprisingly challenging!
Yes that would be great. Since getting a usb c iPhone it’s be fun to sample straight into my OP-Z (and presumably the SP-404 mk2 when I get around to it). Being able to sample micro tonal sounds would be even better. I’m only one person but would pay for the app again (maybe with some discount?). But understand the challenge. Great app either way!
an older iPhone with audio/MIDI interface could serve as a microtonal translator for hardware - that could be one use case.
This iPhone app could be made non-editable, and free of cost. With a simple interface and import option from the iPad and desktop Entonal Studio.
Having spent some time redesigning the interface for a phone I’m inclined to agree. In any case the UI layout will need an overhaul.
thank you @elemental for the consideration. This could be useful for iPhone owners.
A bit off topic: I just realised that the old iPhone I have (salvaged from public trash and brought to new life as a controller) has the Lightning connector; and my old MFi MIDI interface is 30-pin. This interface is for very old 32-bit iPads and iPhones. Therefore I won't be able to use this iPhone for that purpose.
But I'm a lucky guy. I have the Tubbutec Eurorack uTune module. I can export Scala files from Entonal, import the file into the module, and process DIN MIDI and USB MIDI to CV or MIDI.
Nice! I have that module too
It’s great apart from one issue: it does not allow me to have one channel for cv and another for glide control. (I.e 303 style sequences from a CV sequencer)
Regarding Entonal Studio on iPhone I’m thinking of it more as a way for people to hear and see microtonal scales but not require a full editing experience. It could serve as more of a player, still also working in AUM as an AUv3 midi processor.
On the subject of old devices, I may need to bump the minimum supported iOS version to 12 in order to add synchronised database support. Hopefully that won’t exclude anyone here.
This looks great! I'll have to buy it for both platforms soon.
One of my first ever programming projects was a Mozaic script for playing microtonal scales. This looks much more convenient. I have some ideas for you, if you're interested. But I'll download the trial and play with it first.
Please do!
I’m currently working on a major update so a good time for new ideas…
