Yea, just look at it as a software synth wrapped up inside a hardware box. A Virtual Analog. With some drums, effects and sequencer, well a GrooveBox.
exactly... i would buy Korg Electribe MIDI Controller box for 100
I'm getting more and more impressed by the Korg Kronos, apparently you can use your the Kronos as an iPad 'Audio & Midi Interface' with CCK+USB cable?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FufDzLQym7A
So it seems that it is possible to digitally record the iPad straight into Kronos and also maybe the opposite and use AD of Kronos to record on the iPad?
This gives me hope that the Electribe Sampler would act like an Audio & Midi-Interface when connected to the iPad using a CCK + USB->Lightning cable or maybe just a single Lightning->USB Cable if the device is class-compliant. This would be super sweet if it works.
Considering it's software and it already has digital to analog convertors built in, it could happen via a software update. Like they did on the Elektron machines.
How limited are you in creating more complete tracks, that extends beyond the 4 bars? Can you copy all those 4 bars over to a new empty pattern with 4 new empty bars, and continue to work on the track that way? I know it lacks a song mode, but can you switch between the patterns without any hassle, and record a track, live, that way?
Sod it, just pressed "order". I better be able to make longer stuff then in iKaossilator on this thing...
@chrisg yes you can copy a pattern. http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/105414#Comment_105414
Tarekith's video has a good bit about the transitions. Effect trails get cut off unless the same effects are set up in the next pattern which would likely be the case in your scenario. It least as I understand it, that is.
Thanks @syropcore ! It's getting hard keeping track of what is patterns/scenes/tracks/parts/etc on various devices and software. I'm just used to tracks. Linear old fashion boring tracks. Gadget got me into the whole scenes and parts etc thing, and with Ableton.
Think that you probably want to let go of the linear tracks thing or an electribe is gonna piss you off! It's meant to be played live. Or prepare to make patterns/parts, transfer to Ableton and make linear tracks there—treating the electribe as more of a loop source.

You can use the Pattern Set function to store up to 64 patterns on the Trigger Pads, so you can easily arrange and launch patterns on the fly. You can also record all of this with the Event Recorder too.
But yes, definitely NOT a linear devices, this is all patterns and you generally need to "perform" them in order to get longer songs.
so you can record your trigger performance of patterns with an event recorder, does the event recorder have a swing function, and can you switch pads immediately or do you have to wait until a pattern that you triggered played out in it's entirety?
Swing is part of the pattern, so you'd need to set it in those before you started recording with the Event Recorder. Patterns change at their end, I don't remember seeing a preference to change this.
Thanks @Tarekith and @syropcore , As long as you somehow can chain patterns together to form more complete stuff, either via live recording into a DAW, or just do it live when messing around I'm fine. And no, it's definitely not gonna be ableton I'm exporting to (I assume the rendered files are regular wav files so).
@Tarekith said:
figured that was prob the case for the swing but I was really hoping the pattern triggering was immediate or at least optionally so. the impc pro's next sequence feature is like this and it gets on my nerves cause it roadblocks a feature that would be great for beat juggling
I bet the electribe sampler will be the same, but maybe korg would listen to a feature request.
When you render, you can choose between Live Set or just standard wav stems.
Well I'm selling mine if the namm announcement isn't anything amazing, putting the money towards the sampler version

Great, thanks.

I was, or rather still am, back 'n forth between the two versions. The sampler would only have your low/high cut filter, while the synth version have a bunch more to shape the sounds with (as I've understood it all). I think Korg did this wrong, kinda "crippling" the two devices w/ these silly limitations. From business perspective only, it might make sense, but I'd gladly pay a wee bit more for a 3rd fully specced out device.:/
Btw, does this come with a USB cable? And is it recognized as a midi device via USB? For syncing up w/ ur DAW and whatnot...Those big midi plug adapters are..feckin old skool.
Edit: Nevermind, it does midi/sync over the USB. Phew!
Really liking this one, has a really nice crunchy and dirty sound to it that I haven't heard coming out of this box before. Ya'll probably seen it already, I kinda gave up watching YouTube after hearing that Mista Bishi track for the 100th time.

Yeah I would love the extra filters on the sampler version.
I really love the concept and OS of the emx2 but the synth engine just isn't doing it for me, and I find the limited fx frustrating. I guess I've been spoilt by all the awesome synths on my trusty ipad.
At least with the sampler version I can sample my iPad and reaktor ensembles into the electribe and work from there. Already the drum sounds on the emx2 are starting to tire for me.
@Buska I'm thinking exactly the same. I already put mine up for sale here in Bucharest, although I can still return it to musicstore.de
I don't actually need all those awesome filters, I'm good with LP, HP, BP and being able to sample stuff.
But I'm a bit confused. On Korg's website on the sampler version it says it has a synth engine also... so I was thinking at leasts basic bread and butter EDITABLE oscillators, but Mistabishi said on twitter that the "synth" on the ESX2 is PCM based. Which is not THAT bad if they at least would allow you to scan the waveform somehow. I'd then sample some lush pads from the iPad and use those.
After 2 weeks with it, I can say I like the build quality, the portability (!!!!) and workflow very very much, but I find the "King Korg engine" rather limited. Have you guys heard how the King Korg sounds with some supersaws? It runs circles around the electribe. It does have 128 notes poly I believe.
I would've honestly paid 50-70 $ more on the Electribe if they put in a better DSP in it with the full engine.
@alecsbuga said:
Yeah I would of paid an extra $200 for the legit king korg DSP. As far as I've heard the sampler has basic sine, saw, square synth engine which is fine for me when combined with the sampling
A cool polyphony hack would be to set channels manually on tracks. So for instance if I set track 1, 2 & 3 on Ch. 3, playing and tweaking 1, would affect all three
Glad I waited. ^ Precisely what I feared (and felt when using it for an hour): not enough synth control on the synth version. Looking forward to the S.
I gotta wait as well. For the synth version I've ordered. Next shipment to Sweden (or perhaps it's the first, I dunno) isn't until around the 15th next month. So about 1 month.
I just looked at the spec manual from Korg which lists all the sounds. And when put in a list like that, it does look like it's a bit sparse with things like snares and kicks. I dunno....if it keeps up with the London gadget inside Gadget (w/ a dash of the Lo-fi Bilbao sounds sprinkled in there), I'll prolly be fine for quite a while. Pitch, length (I hope?) and some effect will allow for some useful/creative variations on the drum sounds I hope.
Does anybody know if this electribe is OTG USB?
On the korg forums they were saying it was, but I haven't checked myself unfortunately.
I'm looking for something like this. should I buy electribe or is there something better out there? Maybe the op-1?
Different beasts really, here's a review I did of the OP-1:
http://innerportalstudio.com/teenage-engineering-op-1-review/
More capable than I thought it would be, but still nowhere as easy or flexible than the Electribe IMVHO. I think the Electribe is capable of a much greater range of sounds too. The OP-1 is really neat, but it would be my first choice for a first hardware purchase. It's ancillary, not the core of most people's set up I find.
