So, I got STRNG- ran it thru all of my midi generators and it all sounded like shit, unless I use an actual controller. weird right?

So I loaded it up in MidiStep and it sounds absolutely incredible. I'm not certain why midisteps excelled where the other generators failed.

I haven't tried it in Harmonicer yet- but anyone have a similar experience with STRNG? Like I was super dissapointed, until I heard it in midisteps. Maybe it's hard to get lush sounds with it, I dunno. I usually use MODAL for string stuff.

MidiStep is the most sensical seq/arp plugin I've ever seen / missed a deal for. Maybe that's why. 😆

Seems like strng excels at long attack curve + dist... At least to get away from the basic FruityLoops pluck tone.

I kinda want Fuguemachine, but since a lot of other apps do what it does - just not as stylish - I’ve been holding out for a sale.

Which apps are like fugue? Only one I know of alternating playheads is mker, fugue machine, and there's another one...

Yeah, there's nothing quite like fugue, though you can often cobble together something similar using a few instances of other apps like Atom2.

There’s this patchstorage patch for Drambo as well. Works pretty well.

Fugue is super nice but for $20 seems pretty high for what it is. Like $10 more dollars you have a full unlock of Loopy Pro. Same price you have Drambo. $20 gets you Koala and every IAP. I don’t know just seems a bit much to me.

I bought Fugue early on at full price for $10-15. Thought it was a decent purchase at the time, considering its quality and the lack of options back then. No way I'd pay $20 for it now unless I needed that specific functionality. Even $10 seems a bit much now.

I think it’s worth a solid tenner but with all the midi sequencers out there $20 does seem on the pricier side. I grabbed it on sale many years ago for $10.

Seems like the general consensus here in this extraordinarily small sample size is that the app seems currently overpriced.

Not sure how in touch the dev is with the iOS music app market currently, and for all we know they have more units sold at this price point than they used to at a smaller rate. Considering the growth of the market I wouldn’t be surprised and there’s a few huge YouTube videos that mention fugue machine and I don’t believe they mention a price so I’m sure that helps the sales.

In contrast I don’t love that an app like Samplr is $19.99 but it being a one of a kind sort of playable instrument, I get it somewhat. That and one of the largest artists on earth mentioning their love and usage of it, might as well capitalize on that free press and keep the price where it is.

I’m also reminded of the game Factorio on Steam. They’ve never lowered their price or offered a sale, except when their pricing was a conversation they upped the price.

I think it’s fair for devs to get paid what they view their product is worth, but a market that could be attained and could create and promote these apps gets lost at every higher pricing tier for people who can’t justify the pricing.

It’s all conflicting! Neon is a steal In comparison @ $5 I’m fairly certain I could get the same play style as fugues with two - 4 instances now that I’m thinking about it.

and how about Rozetta sequencer suite ... all 10 apps for a tenner... :-)

Bram is arguably the best all around dev for what it’s worth and the man understands pricing like no other! I could write a damn thesis on his apps and his iOS App Store pricing structure!!

I definitely had to do a double take when I saw the current price vs the (I think) $5 I paid some years ago. You could always send an email to the dev outlining your views, I guess? I also think he might make more profit overall if this was priced at a tenner, but I really don't know and that's definitely for the dev to decide!

Or yeah - even the occasional flash sale down to 10, similar to what Lumbeats does. This would be enough to tempt the ABF app junkies for whom 20 just seems too much, but who do really want to get this. I feel that would definitely net more money for the dev than keeping it at a static 20.

Well said, Gav. I appreciate the thoughts.

I’ll reach out to the dev and see what’s up. I appreciate your insights always 🤘🏽🙏🏽

If you have Harmonicc ( @cem_olcay ) it sounds good in it with strum. I think STRNG / MIDIstep sounds so good because of all of the parameter mods it has.

At this point, I have amassed a slew of industrial / noise makers and sequencers and really craving some actual music . Lol

I'm sure you meant Fugue Machine rather than Figure, but I get bummed out when I'm reminded of Figure because it's such a fun app and it could have been great with a song mode and proper export options.

Amazing to think that Figure came out 12 years ago. But it is still in the app store and is now free.

    Figure history here.

Not sure if people are aware but Beatonal is a better figure. Still no song mode and hasn’t been updated for 7 years but works well. Can have up to 4 bars.

Yea it’s basically the flushed out version of figure. I unlocked Beatonal a long time ago. Good call on the mention.

This devs apps are a bit esoteric. Reading the terms and service it’s clear that none of the sounds can be used for commercial, unless I’ve read and understood them incorrectly, or they’ve changed since then.

Fun to get inspiration from though, just wanted to point this out

(I looked at troooba (same dev) a while back and somehow got to the terms and conditions is why I’m mentioning this)

  • edited December 4

Speaking of esoteric, I was hoping to get Moloch Vox and that other esoteric synth shit dude has. The design reminds me of those custom midi controllers on Etsy.

    I'll post some STRNG w/ Harmonicc X'amples

    Here is said X:

Here is STRNG w/Midistep. Just hit random and tweaked string tension.

It sounds so much better, both example are just stock StRnG with the two generators. triggering strummed chords is where strng seems best.

I look at it as an industrial string.

Update: Actually it sounds best with Autony. I'll post another example- but sound much better than the onboard keyboard. The controls are kinda weird, a lot like k-devices controls.

Look at AUtony running like a pro:

Here is the apesoft accordion layerd with it:

More often than not, I'll cook up a really cool 4 bars or whatever, have no idea how I got there, look under the hood and see the mess of wires and dubious chains, name the song "testtttttt", close it and back away slowly, and never open it again.

  • That ferromagnetic app seems cool for 2 bucks. I trip to it

Really isn't well designed, even for what it is. Hard to play, poorly calibrated envelope, etc. Sad consolation prize for missing the tardigrain sale, lol. Gawd I wish I would just watch a Doug vid before buying something. That's what he's there for!

$9 total in pointless trinkets isn't too bad I guess for the season, though I should've taken the forum's advice and just bought one cool thing like MidiStep, or for gawd sakes Hilda.

  • You're not alone brother. You'll make a banger with it one day and chuckle or violently rage at the irony of this silly lil fkr.

We'll get a good sale on the flip side

You can do cool things with s t r n g! Get some awesome percy plucks and pads. Play the high and low end of the keyboard on each tweak you make and they will be a lot different.
Tighten the strings, mess with the noise length until its a tight pyramid and add some delay , it can do some cool sounds but it isn’t the best app he made. Shape synth is a great one tho

  • edited December 4

Set it up like this and play octave 5/6 and its nice n clicky, then play low octaves for some noisy dusty bassy piano

After that raise the attack a lil bit for some more cool keys
