In celebration of the Quantovox 3 year anniversary

The quality/value of ringatron is a topic I exhaust my contemporaries with on the regular. Now Real Phase has offered up an additional course to an already carefully curated meal that had us totally sasiated. Now we fatten on the corpses of deprecated AU's and Granulators that Quantavox unalived.

Gah, I jumped the gun on samplr at $20. Nooo!

I also missed another deal by a day too. Ah well, can’t win em all.

Got two apps that went on sale a month later so I feel ya 😅

The sales are to drive new people to them that otherwise wouldn’t have purchased. the full price it is most of the year is what keeps them able to stay developing Is how I look at it.

Samplr is on sale .. $9.99 .. which is 50% off of the last price. But it jumps around all over the place? Its confusing. I don’t know I’m not @Poppadocrock so I’m just gonna leave this here. 😅🤘🏽🙏🏽

    Nice Catch!

There’s a lot of factors at play, but in a nutshell… this particular app has been around awhile, and though it is still functional, it never went AU. It also went without an update for a while, a few years back.

I’m totally guessing here, but maybe the developer thought a drop in the regular price would be more accurate in the current market place, especially considering it’s not AU and has been available for a long time. This is pure speculation, and I can see why it might raise a “red flag”, so to speak, but in this case I believe it’s simply a price adjustment for reasons stated above. It doesn’t reflect any problems or issues or lack of quality in the app. You’d have to ask the developer to know for sure.

If a lack of AU is cool no biggie and you like samplers it’s surely worth considering. Watch some YT videos and see if it’s something you’re into. Cheers!

I appreciate the insights as always @Poppadocrock !

So I’ve only been on iOS as AU has been around, with AUM I don’t really see that much of an issue other than saving. Not hating on AU or not AU apps at all. Just saying if something brings inspiration, then that’s all that matters.

I use Thumbjam frequently for instance and just record what I need and bring it into whatever app I’m using to expand on the ideas I got going. Maybe it’s not the most straight forward way to create but being a creative is rarely that isn’t it?

Samplr, semi recently got multiple plugs by one of the largest EDM artists as of late (fred again..(I’m not putting the two dots to be cheeky this is how this man has done his stage name so I’m merely calling him by what he goes by)) so I’m sure it’s gotten a fair share of new users based on that alone. The man gave it glowing praise for its musicality and ability to bring new inspirations towards his mostly sampled based creations. AU be damned!

You can see the price increase somewhat correlate with that praise making the media rounds as well as a quote from the artist on the top of the app description. Mix all that with what you’ve said pop and I think we’ve mostly figured it out 😅😂

  • "Samplr, semi recently got multiple plugs by one of the largest EDM artists..."

    what is semi?

    what is semi?

I heard it on the Tape Notes podcast episode 105 featuring fred again.. so late 2022. Not considering that semi recent.
But I vaguely recall him mentioning it more recently on a different medium though it's escaped me. Maybe Zane Lowes interview with him?

It being a Podcast though makes it somewhat evergreen content, with him dropping an album this year with some bigger name features I'm sure it got a lot more plays / attention than previously, It just makes the rounds on forums, youtube, etc.

Hell Samplr's first Thread on that hell site owned by Meta is about the interview plug and that was in August of last year.

  • Music Apps with IAP sales

  • Miscellaneous Free IAPs

  • Samplr and Borderlands are two non-AU apps that are still worth having because their interfaces are that good.

In the modular landscape of AUv3 it's easy to forget to go deep with one app.

    Totally agree.
Id love em to be auv3 but i basically treat them like an external instrument . They are that good and no one’s really made an auv3 quite like em

+1 they are both excellent, perhaps the most playble of the samplers and definitely worth it despite only being IAA. Samplr has a "Back to IAA host" button, Borderlands could really do with one, but with a bit of care they integrate very well into an AUM live rig.

  • A couple Music App IAPs on Sale

  • True @offbrands i guess it’s mostly about how you like to create and one’s workflow, which is a personal preference. I still use several IAA or core midi only apps.

True - theres a few apps I use that don't connect at all but I really enjoy for music making. The creative process demands what it demands!

So, I got STRNG- ran it thru all of my midi generators and it all sounded like shit, unless I use an actual controller. weird right?

So I loaded it up in MidiStep and it sounds absolutely incredible. I'm not certain why midisteps excelled where the other generators failed.

I haven't tried it in Harmonicer yet- but anyone have a similar experience with STRNG? Like I was super dissapointed, until I heard it in midisteps. Maybe it's hard to get lush sounds with it, I dunno. I usually use MODAL for string stuff.

I’ve never gotten s t r n g to sound good lol. Everytime I open it I end up disappointed again. Kind of just let it gather digital dust at this point.

Really isn't well designed, even for what it is. Hard to play, poorly calibrated envelope, etc. Sad consolation prize for missing the tardigrain sale, lol. Gawd I wish I would just watch a Doug vid before buying something. That's what he's there for!

$9 total in pointless trinkets isn't too bad I guess for the season, though I should've taken the forum's advice and just bought one cool thing like MidiStep, or for gawd sakes Hilda.

I’m not great with hearing envelopes but it’s something I hear often in music related threads about apps and I would love to know how to hear a good one compared to a…. Less than good one. If you have any tips or somewhere to point I’d appreciate it. I suppose I could duck duck go it but my minds a blank on what to search 😅

Ah, while envelope-nuance-detection is indeed a honed sense (and definitely not placebo :p), I rather meant that e.g. the attack range is scaled way too far, making it impossible to set precisely within the ~0-10% range, and useless after ~40%.

I'm in the same boat, not sure how the hell people are seeing a difference between this $100 compressor and that $10 compressor with the same number of knobs. Like, it compresses, dunnit? That being said... It's easy enough to tell the flat/stepped/rigid response of a 90s toy digi synth or a lot of 1st-2nd-gen VST's after being spoiled on the curved/smooth/dynamic response of everything about a Minimoog, for example.

Hey I appreciate the response and that makes sense. Anytime I would hear that “really good envelopes” on a YouTube channel or something I never got an explanation of why and searching for that term was a bit difficult. Granted I’m not savvy at search. So thank you 🙏🏽

I used apple au’s when I edited audio for podcasts on Ferrite with my iPad and I could t tell a negative or positive experience with them, but knowing what I know now I’m sure I could find some quarks about it I dislike for dialing it in. I haven’t used a ton of compressors but I feel ya. Hell I use Roughrider as my go-to still and think that’s been pretty good!

Can anyone get Virsyn Band Delay to load in anything?

It works fine for me in AUM. (iPad Pro on 17.7)

Thanks. I’m on latest iPad OS, so will delete and try another reload see if It helps.

Did that solve it? It seems a lot of Harry’s apps are getting updates recently to solve issues introduced with iOS 18. If it’s still a problem, I’d contact him to let him know via the Virsyn website.

nope didnt help, so will contact later

@Fruitbat1919, BandDelay got an update yesterday, is it working for you now?

There are lots of apps out there worth having that aren’t AUv3. I never got that “it has to be AU or I’m out” - some apps don’t need to be AU at all. I’ve got a couple of the seqsual apps that I love called Astal and sqsl RSVP and neither need to be AU.

I love seeing how far I can push one app. If I never found this forum I would probably still be soloing Koala. 🐨

I'm just gonna chop it up to peoples brains function differently, some people feel like they need the streamlined workflow for their process of using AU, some don't. It's a shame though, as limitations often yield surprising results.

Hell I love Trinity for Mastering, utilizing a really well designed app to focus on the mix is great for me and my process. But anytime I bring it up @SevenSystems gets asked if it's AUV3 yet. Almost like clockwork!* It's also universal. So I view it as kind of sending off my stems to a mix/master and work on it on my desktop. Which I think in a way was the vision of the app, with the potential to add more to it if it did well sales wise. Wasn't really meant to be at the end of a signal chain.

*Sorry if that happens again after bringing it up again knowing the possibility... hope you're well 😅
