The OP-Z has visuals support too, arguably a deeper one too, though the Seqtrack’s looks a lot easier to use.

Would never buy opz since it looks too enigmatic. Who has time to learn how to use it? Seqtrak on the other hand looks very well thought and intuitive. @rs2000 seqtrak s sequencer has probability. Does opz has it?

  • OP-Z has more kinds of probability that you can shake a stick at, it's the best sequencer I've ever used for that sort of thing.

  • This seems like a fail in the sampling department. Based on the videos, it looks like the user samples are just available as one shots. I don't see any examples where recorded samples can be chopped or even singles samples spread across the keyboard. I'm also curious (but I doubt it) if you could use this is an effects box. Processing audio in through the master performance effects. Thankfully, this doesn't register on my GAS meter.

  • I’m definitely interested in this purely because it’s a sampling groovebox with the Yamaha FM and ANW engines and all those great acoustic samples like their pianos and strings. Having that power in a groovebox is awesome. But as some have said, sampling seems more limited here. I’m gonna stick with the 404 for now and watch how this goes and see if it gets any cool updates form Yamaha. Then maybe this summer take a stab at it.

Yeah man, sampling aspect seems to be the only drawback so far. But from another point of view this box ticks a lot of boxes already: it's a 7 channel drum machine and it has two synths built in. Plus super fun clip launcher/pattern selector by simple knob twist. Not counting all the effecs. Only reverb has x12 different types (!). Will take it every time over ep133 that I sold almost immediately.

It looks neat, but no sample chopping! Only one shots.

If Ableton ever make a Push Mini, pretty much exactly the same only with an 8x4 grid and around the size of the Novation Circuits, it’ll be game over for these kinds of things.

In the meantime, every time I see something like this I ask myself why I wouldn’t just use Koala, or Logic Pro for iPad, or similar.

To me it would be to get away from digital screen. Even if I did say it is missing a screen. 😂

Yamaha does have very good sounds, they were one of the pioneers in developing sample based instruments that sound like the real thing. I have a lot of Roland gear but also a 1988 Yamaha Electone and I still use the stock drum beats on that beast quite a bit lol

And since I already do have quite a bit of other gear, including a lot of ‘portable’ stuff, but still don’t have a device quite like this, I’m actually quite looking forward to see how this plays out… and I actually do quite like the form factor. The buttons on the side actually seems intuitive to me? I get why some people don’t really dig it, and that’s fine. I’ve never really understood the whole “well I can do that thing with this and that other gear/app/etc” just because so what? It’s just another tool. The world would be boring if everything was all exactly the same!

  • I might end up scooping this little device up, after seeing some more ‘non-influencer’ real-world users’ hands-on reviews, tutorials, and opinions… as long as there aren’t any major design flaws / quality control issues with the build-durability or something like that

I do the same like to experience Yamahas sound signature from this box. So far I have onwned different machines from Korg, through Akai to Roland and I am still searching. Never owned a Yamaha but they have been in this game for a long time. Seqtrak would be exciting to work with.

Yeah those kinds of comments are a pet peeve of mine also. A lot of people just seem to not like any piece of hardware or software if it doesn’t interest them 100%. And often don’t even see the point in it existing apparently lol. It’s weird.

I’m definitely excited to see where this goes. If the synth engines are powerful enough it might make a perfect companion to the 404 and iPad.

  • I will say that the “I can do that with this” comments can prompt others to point out things that one thing can do that the other can’t which may not be obvious at first. So it can lead to useful discussion.

But it would be nicer to phrase it as, “What can this do that that can’t?” 🙂

OMG , it really is a copy of TE, faulty keys included.

  • Sadly I have the grey/orange version and it has the same issue, although not quite as bad as in this video. It depends on the angle at which it is pressed, so if it's pressed at an angle or too lightly it doesn't trigger.

It's a shame because I was enjoying jamming with it today. It sounds really good and the workflow is really fast. Unfortunately, it's been let down by build quality.

I'll consider buying it again in the future but for now, it's being returned.

Apparently keys are the best to hit in the center, otherwise they could not trigger. Still a design flaw but means they are not broken 😂

If a PC keyboard worked like that, it would be totally unacceptable 😄

    Hahaha. Agree.
I was immediately thinking about how bad these keys are after seeing this photo.

Just look how unequally they are seated

    Yikes

  • Why does this remind me of my Yamaha Rm1x keyboard buttons? 😉

  • The RMX1 was a brilliant groovebox but I could never get on with that hardware either.

  • My unit arrived. I love it!!! No problem with the keys. Keys are better than I expected to be. The app is so dope. Just look at the possibilities in sound design for drums.

  • Build quality is ok-ish. If you ask does it bent, the answer is very much 😂
The plastic is very thin. Lights leaks pretty massive. But still I love it and the fact of how easy it is to use this machine.

  • @israelite :Thanks for including that.. Not to mention how easy it is to do visuals . It’s worth investing in because this will probably be a series of instruments . eventually

  • @israelite thanks! How does the FM engine sound? And how are the other acoustic sounds in the other synth engine (pianos and such)? I’m still tempted by this one.

The FM engine is the same as the reface DX.
