@israelite thanks! How does the FM engine sound? And how are the other acoustic sounds in the other synth engine (pianos and such)? I’m still tempted by this one.

The FM engine is the same as the reface DX.

Oh that’s good to know. Never owned the Reface DX but the demos all sound great.

DX Synth sounds amazing. You are able to do extensive sound design via the app

@Telstar5 Yamaha already released first firmware update. Let's see how they will develop this product. Do you have any guesses regarding next in the serie of instruments?

Thanks. I gotta admit that UI gorgeous. Wow.

Definitely tempted by this no doubt.

@HotStrange the app is indeed both good looking and very useful.

Day two of using the device.
After connecting a Midi Controller a pleasant change = pressure sensitivity is present, drums can be played chromatically.
On the drawbacks. After picking up the device in my hand I have noticed a cracking noise... and i discovered it's "floor" is sagging in the middle. There is powerful hardware inside, I really don't understand why Yamaha decide to encapsulate it in such a fragile case :|
I did nothing crazy with the device since taking it out of the box. No idea why this happened.
But now I am happy that I have 3 years Thomann warranty ;)

  • edited January 25

I have opened the device to see if I can secure the bottom plate somehow, perhaps with a two sided tape to prevent it from bending further. This is how the box looks like after unscrewing the bottom plate

  • edited January 25

There are 4 winbond (memory?) chips on the main PCB. Battery is not fixed to the device. It is just laying there sandwiched between two pieces of relatively thin foam.

  • edited January 25

The best thing. Jeans tag has a custom PCB board on top, not connected to anything and without function... Yamaha engineers 😂

  • Thanks for the pics! That is a bit sad that such a powerful synth has questionable build quality though.

  • edited January 25

Thanks for the teardown @israelite 👍 It’s almost like Digital Foundry, but for synths! (PS: how’s the frame pacing? 😉)

I have a Seqtrak too, & think it has great potential, even if the build quality isn’t perfect. For me, the leftmost bottom key isn’t as sensitive as the others, but other than that, I’m pretty happy with them. Also, the knobs (which are all clickable) are perfectly functional, & I have no issues with them. It’s a light device, but that’s good for couch use, or holding in 1 hand, while using t’other to sequence/play. The fact that it has quite a lot of power like probability, (although drum tracks only I think?) Ratchets, motion rec, etc makes it v.fun. The Sampler is v.kool too, as are the touch strips - but I definitely need more time to learn how to program them. Also, I’m a sucker for battery operated hardware, especially with built-in speakers 🔊💗

I bought mine from Andertons (UK), so it definitely comes with at least 1year warranty, so if any issues pop up, it’s relatively simple to get it replaced. Hopefully Yamaha continue to make similar/more advanced hardware (higher quality keys & metal case for sure) because the bang to buck ratio is f’really high! 😻

  • @Tarekith yeah man. But at the end it's very packed with Features. I keep discovering and discovering more. Recent discovery - main mix has like 6 or 7 highly configurable compressor to choose from... Yamaha decided to save money on build quality but gave us very powerful device in return. I keep loving mine more and more, even despite all the issues.

@gdog these keys are not good brother 😂 I have discovered you need to smack them quite hard for them to trigger. Sometimes i push them as a normal human being would and nothing happens. I agree, the device has big potential. Have fun with yours. Cheers

  • Glad to hear there hasn’t been anything too crazy but sad to hear the build quality isn’t quite up to par. But appreciate all the info. It really looks like Yamaha nailed the software side of things.

  • edited January 25

@HotStrange the knobs are quite cool and I have to admit I start to like the touch strip pretending to be faders. So not everything is lost... Built quality is opposite on what you can find for example on Elektron machines, but fun of using it recompensate it. Did you get yours already? ;) Cheers

  • Damn you all!! A guy can’t even keep his money reading this forum!!!! Ordering tomorrow ..
In black and grey of course

For sure give it a try. This thing is exceptional. And if you buy online, you can always return it.

  • Looks like its made out of thick paper, what a joke for something portable. But cool sound, design and form factor. Is it easy to use without the editor app? It seems like Yamahas take on the Op-Z. Would wait for the next iteration, first one out is rarely good in this niche, see: Maschine/MPC/OP-1/Circuit/Deluge... Like this offering from Yamaha really needs more encoders as some said and access to params. Elektron are the best at advanced hardware UI. Next Ableton offering is what tickles my fancy at the moment, or if Elektron began making metal boxes again.

The Refaces are really solid, in all aspects. Even the stupid no-button buttons on the FM one and tiny sliders on the VA made them worth using.

  • That top housing is a great candidate for a 3d printed replacement, wouldn’t be surprised to see somebody putting a 3d printable model out there soon.

Haha I haven’t yet but my finger is hovering right over that buy button 😂 I wanna get the 404 first but this may be a close second in the coming weeks. (Unless you guys keep posting and I can’t help myself 😅)

@zqekdnxebq thats pretty good idea. The plastic on the original is thanks God not as thin as paper.
The light leaks visible on the photo I posted before are very much because top housing is made of transparent plastic that is painted grey and orange (in the color version I have). Only the bottom part of the case I casted from grey plastic, not painted nor coated in any way.
This device would not age well visually. The paint will surely start to wear our. First on the edges of the device and in any place that will get scratched.

It's not necessary to use the app most of the time. Most of the functions are accessible from the device. App is useful for sound design and advanced config of FX.

@HotStrange i am also eyeing the 404 but in central Europe it seem to be out of stock. But also 404 looks awfully complicated to operate. I don't know how much patience you have for hardware. I don't have too much so when having both i would be probably hanging around Seqtrak more :D

I totally get that. I just love samplers for what I want to do with it it seems like it won’t require a whole lot of brain power 😂 but yeah Roland has added so much now that it’s made it a pretty complicated machine. First world problems haha

  • @HotStrange Sampler on Seqtrak can trigger 7 samples in a single project = You can sequence 7 samples. But they are only one shots as far as I know.

Gentlemen, day 3 of using Seqtrak.

After discovering it's rather complicated to backup project on a mobile version of the Seqtrak app, i had to download a Windows version and discovered the following:

There a tons and tons of additional sounds ready to load to a device (in all categories, from drums, throught synths, till samples). Need to be downloaded one by one, so a bit of clicking here. But they load super quick onto a device.

It all lands in the user sounds area

But the best thing so far are so called "Packs". Containing extra projects, drums, samples and Synth presets, all compiled into one.

There are currently 107 FREE PACKS !

How cool it is that Yamaha didn't monetize this content but is offering it as a free download?
My mind is blown. That's my first experience with a Yamaha product.
I don't feel like I have bought something from Yamaha. I feel like I have become one of Yamaha's friends with whom Yamaha is sharing it's goodies. So coool! :)

Woah that’s a ton of content for free 😮 good on Yamaha for doing that. It’s definitely gonna help people feel good about their purchase that’s for sure.

It’s great they are offering so much free content. But am I the only one that wishes free/factory content was ....I dunno... already installed and ready to go on the device? When I got my MPC I had to go through the same song and dance, downloading and installing factory content via a computer. Is there a single machine in this genre out there that you can just open up, plug in, and everything is ready to go? No logins no passwords no installations? Shit is getting out of hand.

Maybe the Roland 707/101 but even then I think there are more accessible online. I think the thought is if you want extra space for your own samples, you won’t have to bother with going through and deleting the factory ones that take up lots of space if they come with all of them pre-installed.

For samples and patches if doesn’t bother me because I prefer to use my own anyway but I really hated how Akai made you do that on the MPC with the ENTIRE synth plugin lol. Why not just install them from the factory?? I didn’t understand that at all.

Machine is full of content out of the box. You can start creating 5 seconds after pressing the power button. Yamaha offers a lot of extra content accessible via the app.

Yeah it’s like you get these plugins for free, essentially they are factory content why not INSTALL THEM AT THE FUCKING FACTORY AKAI. I have to activate them AND buy an SD card to install them on. This SD card I bought was 256 GB and cost me about 30 bucks or somewhere around there. Now explains this to me: if I can purchase 256 GB of storage for 30 bucks what in the hell is stopping these companies from essentially offering the equivalent of that amount of storage, having everything installed on there, and leaving room for user stuff, and just charge a bit more for the product? Like why am I having to do work that should have been done at the factory?

  • Hi. Interesting that it has a DX engine in the device. Does anyone know if soundmondo works- ie if the sounds are compatible?
If not perhaps yamaha could do this in an update. There are hundreds of DX sounds. I use soundmondo on my modx and its really useful.

    https://soundmondo.yamahasynth.com/voices?reface=DX

  • Yeah that kind of thing is definitely annoying. The 707 has all the factory stuff loaded, though if you want to buy and install any Zen Core packs you need to do it after the fact. The worst is Push 3 Standalone for me so far. Any additional packs you install need to be downloaded and installed one by one, and after you install each one it dumps you out of the list of packs available requiring more navigating. It takes AGES.

Couldn’t agree more with ya. It’s such a PITA and so unnecessary. Like I want to be able to open it, plug it in, and get started. I don’t wanna be connected to a computer for the first 1-2 hours downloading a bunch of “factory” content just to be able to use half the advertised features 🤦🏻‍♂️ so annoying. And then (at least mine) didn’t ship with the update needed to be able to install the synths so I also had to update before I could even install those. Cmon Akai.

  • I couldn't care less about bundled samples. Worst is when they can't be deleted. I'm buying a machine to make my own content with, not sound like everyone else with cheesy and/or generic preset packs.
