What are key differences between this and previous attempts over the past 10 or 20 years to go mainstream?

    The short version is: Apple.

Trash journalism is now regular journalism. They’re all taking TMZ and BuzzFeed lessons.

I can't speak to the credibility of the Stanford University source that's referenced, but can you explain why it qualifies as BuzzFeed-style trash journalism? I'm not talking about the clickbaity headline, which journalists almost never write, but the actual substance of the piece, which is clearly framed as a wider speculative piece, and not a critique of the product as a product?

I just read it. A very interesting feature article. Speculative, yes, but each piece of speculation is backed by argument. It’s certainly not a rant, nor a hit job.

The point made that long term headset use might change the way we view other people, making them more « unhuman », is particularly interesting. I sometimes wonder if the huge increase in dangerous driving we see nowadays is caused in part by a generation raised on video driving games - with no real-world consequences for risky actions - and now unleashed behind the wheel. Maybe the increase in gun and knife crime is part of the same trend; these things are normalised in an unreal setting, and therefore become less outrageous in reality.

Personally, there’s no way I’d walk around with a headset on. The real world has so much to offer.

I agree. Backed by argument and with opposing viewpoints noted. Personal opinions noted as such. I see nothing to object to. I would love to hear specifically what’s wrong with the article beyond general claims of “fake news”. It’s an interesting topic.

Increased crime levels are due in part to prosecutors refusing to prosecute criminals. See: NYC, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles. New York City is a mixed bag, for example. Robberies up, murders down: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/05/nyregion/new-york-crime-stats.html

Yes, I’m sure there are many reasons.

  • So Microsoft and Meta are spreading “truth” about Apple products. Guys, we must obey and take this point of view seriously. ;)

I saw that. Haha. Not looking good for either of them as they desperately attack Apple.

Other than the Moog app there don't seem to be any music apps made for the AVP.

Some current iPad music apps, like FL Mobile and Caustic, show as compatible in the online App Store, but I'm not sure if they show up in the AVP's onboard app store.

I do know that the AVP's iPad compatibility is restricted to two touches (as opposed to the hardware iPad's 10) but that should be enough for plunking a keyboard or hitting drum pads if apps like that work on the device.

Nobody has one and tried anything like this?

I certainly wouldn't get an AVP for music (like I did with my first iPad) but it would be a fun extra if I did have another reason to get one. I did the demo. I have a PSVR1 and Quest 2. The AVP is very impressive.

  • Somebody made an "AVP in my home studio" video. He's using it as a Mac monitor to drag around to anywhere in his studio he wants, but he also shows an iPad DAW running in it, which partially answers at least one of my questions...

You can find out whether an iPad app is activated for use in Vision Pro by expanding the "Compatibility" portion of the Info section at the bottom of the App Store listing. I just checked several of the major DAWs and Beatmaker 3, AUM, and EG Nodes are showing as AVP-compatible; Cubasis, Gadget 3, Logic, and Garageband are not.

  • Hoping for Logic for visionOS on its 1 year anniversary 5/23?

I think we’ll probably get GarageBand first, sometime between WWDC and the holidays.

I have this sensation that GB has been EOL’d maintenance mode only

  • No way, it's way too popular of an app for them to just ignore it going forward. Logic is way too complicated for your average beginning musician to be a replacement.

Not adding new features isn't ignoring it. When was the last time you heard Apple hyping new GarageBand features?

I'm sure they'll make it Vision Pro enabled though.

I expect its a similar situation to the M1+ App Store listing where apps listed as compatible by default unless they opted out. There's no way those two apps have changed anything to support AVP.

    I haven't checked that assumption.

they haven’t touched the core app in 5 years…it’s been only “stability” improvements and bug fixes and sound packs

Not to mention the price has multiplied several times. I think it's about 5x what it was 6 years ago.

That doesn’t make it “end of life”.

It is a free app that does what it was designed to do very well.

Marcos is the most capable UI designer when you need something contemporary and modern. Apple has the best manpower they can get. I hope your predictions are fulfilled.

  • Being able to use some model of AirPods while live-recording into Drambo is the dream! Hopefully the need for low latency with Vision Pro will help this along.

I mean, this isn't yet an attempt to go mainstream. The thought is that Apple joining the market will raise all ships and give VR the legitimacy and shot in the arm that it still needs, even after tens of millions of Meta Quests being sold. The Quest 3 could yet have its moment in the sun - if I was Zuck,I'd be firmly positioning it as the 'almost as good' as Vision Pro headset despite being a seventh of the price, which also happens to feature by far the best suite of VR games.
