SideRack by NovoNotes Connects DAWs with iOS Apps

"SideRack" is a plugin designed for macOS, enabling the use of audio plugins operating on mobile devices such as iPads and iPhones from a DAW on your Mac. This plugin facilitates the easy integration of the innovative AUv3 plugins’ ecosystem and touch interface experiences of mobile devices into professional music production environments.

SideRack is comprised of two main components: the 'SideRack Plugin,' designed for use within a DAW on macOS, and the 'SideRack Server,' which functions on a mobile device. Audio and MIDI signals fed into the SideRack Plugin from the DAW are swiftly transferred and processed by the SideRack Server through a USB cable connection."

Wow, that looks interesting. I'm not going to try out even the free demo as $79 is more than I care to pay for than just the added benefit over iDAM of two-way audio, but I'm curious to see how it works out for others.

I'm assuming it's not possible to use a USB audio interface connected to the iOS device at the same time as this. Would love to find out that's not the case though.

If I feel a serious need for two-way audio between Mac and iOS, I'd rather put that $79 towards an iConnectivity 4+ or 4c, or a Lewitt connect.

  • Interesting. I just set up a new studio space with a MacBook Pro and a 2022 iPad Pro connected via an Audio4c, but I’ve still got my old 2018 iPad Pro, and a spare USB-C connection on the laptop….

  • I use Bluetooth to transfer midi data was looking at Rodecaster Duo for Audio between iPad and Mac mini

  • Instantly browsing a list of your iPad's AUv3s from an instrument track or effect in Logic for Mac is just… wild! No automation of a plugin's own parameters though. Would such a thing be impossible?

  • Latency not terrible, either!

Pretty flipping good - I'm running DrumComputer on the iPad and Atlas on the Mac and I can't hear any sync wander with my old worn out ears. What's really cool is that any iPad apps sync with the Mac DAW transport and tempo...

Well, I suppose this is the current iteration of Studiomux.

I tried the short demo; there are 3 separate DAW plugins for Instrument, Midi Effect and Audio Effect.

I tested using iPhone 12 Mini and Ableton Live 12 Beta.

It runs solid and the latency is no slouch.

A nice addition is you can choose your auv3 via the DAW plugin or the ios app. AND there's a search.
What would be nice is if it made the distinction between instruments, effects and midi effects, because no matter which one you're using, it's just going to show all your auv3s.

What I don't like is the lack of communication from this developer. It smells like the guy who did Studiomux.
There's just enough there to sell and who knows how long this is going to be supported.
There's a conflict where it say's the trial is 10 minutes 'here' while it says 5 minutes 'there'.
OP just made an account to paste.

It costs 78 USD btw. Seeing as how it's currently the only one of its kind (?) ... well....I'm not furious, just....eh.

So, do I want to spend 78 for the current iteration of Studiomux only to find it breaks in a year?

    I can wait.

    (Or can I?)

Yeah, technically everything has been running solid 👍🏽

  • I should add that this is wayyyy less of a PITA than Studiomux was. Studiomux had to be used as a host while this is just an ios app and DAW plugin so it's taking away that extra layer of 'ggahhhh!'

And as an audio effect it does run well. I was testing Cascade on some drums and an FM Bass at fast tempo and the latency was great. I added another effect (forgot what it was) and then the latency was noticeable so it could either depend on the app or accumulate once you start stacking

  • Not getting great results in Ableton on Mac mini with iPhone 12, audio is distorted and CPU meter hitting 80%! Never seen that on an M1, will keep testing, looks a good product if it's stable.

I dunno, the web site is in English and Japanese. If it was the Studiomux developer I expect it would be in English and German.

Sure. Either way, the ‘communication’ is minimal. Just showcase the product, give a little info to get started, and that’s that.
Like on my first visit to the website there were accordion style links where pretty much each one just linked to somewhere else where there was minimal info.
The same way an account was created here just to paste the advertisement.
Ie overall it’s ‘Here; product. Bye’

But hey at least with studiomux there was a forum and he did communicate sporadically with Bert’s tests to try and iron things out.
I totally understand we all can’t and/or don’t want to be social.

And hey, maybe their support is…supportive.
And maybe they’ll keep it up to date.

It’s just the similarities that make me wary about the stable life of this.

I will probably try this out at some point. Good to see the future has arrived. I recently picked up BlueCat's Connector to interconnect my DAWs more. This could bring iOS into the mix better than USB MIDI. I like it conceptually, but in practice ?

NovoNotes has been around for a few years, at least 2. I picked up their Ambience Enhancer lite when it first came out early 2022 and got on their mailing list. I liked the concept. To my knowledge this is the first foray into ios. The product line is interesting but has not generally aligned with my interests, so I eventually deinstalled the one plugin and unsubscribed. They seemed to be doing a lot of multi-point audio, ambisonics, and offering higher priced tools into the game/film/VR effects markets, at least my take on product positioning. :| it was lost on me.

I don't think you need to worry about this developer am-scraying in the next few years at least. How often they will issue updates, probably will be dictated by how widely adopted their software like this becomes. My take, it is a young Japanese person or small team who studied mathematics, audio engineering, or some equivalent and decided to hang up a shingle and sell software applications. I never quite got the back story. I would give them better than even odds at surviving for another decade. There is a precision and craftmanship that I could see in their work, that you don't find in every line of plugins. The people behind NovoNotes seem completely serious about what they are doing, and small shop thus responsive I would imagine. Never had any personal need to contact them.

Hello everyone, I'm Satoshi, the Product Manager of NovoNotes. Thank you for your interest in our products, and we greatly appreciate all the feedback here.

  • We do not have a forum or Discord server. Instead, we offer support through our website and email, as well as a feedback form to our development team. Support related to licenses and sales should be directed to our support email, and technical issues should go through our feedback form. Don't worry if you send something to the wrong place; we'll make sure it gets to the right person internally.

We are considering expanding our support, but due to very limited sales, budget, and staffing, we have to prioritize and address issues one at a time.

  • So, do I want to spend 78 for the current iteration of Studiomux only to find it breaks in a year?

To be honest, how long we can support a product heavily depends on its sales. Since releasing our first plugin in 2020, we have launched seven paid plugins and have not ended support for any of them. To be precise, the HPL2 Processor is discontinued, but we have provided all users with a free license for the more feature-rich replacement, HPL Processor Lite.

  • They seemed to be doing a lot of multi-point audio, ambisonics, and offering higher priced tools into the game/film/VR effects markets

Yes, NovoNotes started with plugins for VR and Immersive Audio. These product lines have been somewhat successful, partly thanks to support from major Japanese game companies and educational institutions. The initial development budget for SideRack also came from these sales.

  • No automation of a plugin's own parameters though. Would such a thing be impossible?

Automation is not yet supported. In the meantime, we believe combining MIDI CC and MIDI Learn could serve as an alternative solution.

  • If I feel a serious need for two-way audio between Mac and iOS, I'd rather put that $79 towards an iConnectivity 4+ or 4c, or a Lewitt connect.

We consider SideRack to be easier to set up and more affordable than hardware products like iConnectivity. For plugins, latency compensation is automatically handled by the DAW, and there's no need for a mechanism like Ableton Link for synchronization. Also, the parameter settings of iOS plugins are saved in the Mac-side DAW project file, making it easy to resume work. Furthermore, there's no limit to the number of plugin instances, as long as your machine's power allows.

Considering @wim's point: if cost were no factor, what’s the most friction free way for an iPad to essentially be an effects send bus for local tracks in a Mac DAW? IDAM can't do this, correct? Is this what you mean by two-way, @wim? Because unlike Sonobus, KQ Voice, et al, the iPad can never be the master when using IDAM or SideRack, at least as I understand them. So it's not two way in that sene. But as a glorified effects send, my god! That kind of round trip is a very cool kind of two-way audio.

I have to say that I got a reply to an email enquiring about the initial discount price very quickly - BTW they're aiming to hold the $78 price till the end of April....👍

Welcome and thank you for joining and responding here! I think you made the value proposition very well. And at 1/5th the price of a hardware solution it's certainly an attractive value. I wish you great success with the product.

  • @satoshiszk This looks really cool. If it were available for windows PCs I would get it right away. Is there any chance of a windows version?

  • Just in time now that my Logic trial runs out and the arrival of Ableton 12 tomorrow.

Seems to be working better for me now after playing around with the buffers and sample rate, I think iPhone is locked to 48k.

I’m getting some hanging notes when using multi channel midi fx so have sent a feedback form.

Really good app though, and was pleased to see it render everything nicely in Ableton.
