GarageBand is on the bus!

  • Gotta say, the icon import when recording is one of the coolest things I've seen in audiobus yet.

  • yeah that is awsome

  • I agree that it's awesome. I just posted a GB review asking them to get all the way on the bus so we can use GB as input. That's what we really need.

  • edited March 2013

Having Garageband on the bus gives you nothing you did not already have, even with Garageband you could always paste Audio in, the only real difference is that you can now record all your cool Audiobus stuff into Garageband instead of pasting it in..once its there you still have Apples closed enviroment..i.e you can't use any garageband gear in anything but Garageband..for this to be useful it has to be I/O...at the moment all you have is Apple advertising Garageband inside the Audiobus enviroment..

  • I had a dream!
I was using Audiobus with Garaband as an input and Cubasis as the output.
    Beautiful dream, though.
    Ah, come on, Apple!!!

  • Apple doesn't need to advertise GB inside the AB environment. Just about every AB customer already has GB. GB's chart ranking hasn't changed much since the update. But AB's chart ranking has skyrocketed, and the rankings of many (all?) AB-compatible apps have risen as well.

Millions of GB users are now being exposed to the AB ecosystem, learning about the world of music apps outside their comfort zone, and buying serious music apps, perhaps for the first time ever (after GB). Every AB input app has effectively become an IAP for them to get more sounds into GB. This is very good for the health and viability of iOS music apps in general, and the AB ecosystem in particular. And Apple benefits too, from their 30% revenue cut of all these increases in app sales.

From that point of view, making GB an AB output is the only thing that would have created this effect. Making it an input would have been useful for serious music app afficionados (i.e. the folks on here) to be able to record GB's sounds into other DAWs, but would not have had this broader awareness effect. 99% of GB users would not be interested in learning to use another, more advanced and complicated DAW.

That said I suspect they'll eventually add the input slot too, if enough people complain about it. Either way, I don't think GB as an app gets much financial benefit from any of this, the benefit is more towards Apple as a whole, and the AB apps ecosystem.

  • I agree with Rhism on some things, however everyone needs to advertise..but the point is..apart from the huge Kudos of having a huge and lets be honest a very good Apple App on the bus..having it here does not do anything it already did not do..what you are saying sounds like you think it's just a huge PR exercise..which is fine..but from a musical point of view, does't do a great deal..just for the record I like GB and have used it a lot with external recording gear..and it would be a massive benefit to be able to record out of it..it has a very high quality of sounds and we need some good pianos and key samples..

  • I appreciate your take on it @Rhism. That makes sense. I'll be posting my review of GB and voice the desire to see it in all slots, since that benefits us users, but for now I hope the devs enjoy riding the wave!

  • Not really a pr exercise, but from a user perspective this update primarily benefits the large # of casual gb users, and does nothing for the smaller set of more hardcore music app enthusiasts. So yes, it comes back to making sure they hear this request loud and clear from enough people.

  • Sorry to be redundant:

Supposedly, part of the update involves the ability to switch off playhead auto-snap, but I'm not finding that option anywhere. Has anyone found it?

  • Unfortunately, GB offers no audio editing (neither normalization, nor destructive trimming). This is a really bad requirement for realtime recording over the bus :-(

  • @Rhism Haha, the first app I experimented recording into GB was Guitarism and was pleasantly surprised to see Guitaism's app icon in the mixer section of GB.

  • Can't believe that Sebastian didn't tell off the OP for failing to provide a link. You've chaaaaanged, man! ;)

  • @Rhism nails it as usual:

  • Sebastian, I reckon it would be a good idea for someone to write a user guide on the website to help the new, more casual userbase whose first real experience of music apps outside GB will come through Audiobus. I think there will be a lot of them, and a "step by step" guide with examples would help them.

  • I don't want to know how many people complained about the missing audio copy out function.Myself included.Did apple listen to them?Nope.
As i said before,i don't believe we will ever see the second half of the bus in GB.

Besides this:congratulations to the Audiobus team. This is like a knightly accolade for a small developer :)

  • Seb,who do you want to play your character when they make the film?
Well done the two of you.

  • Haha ^^ love it! :)

  • Am I missing something here, I can for the life of me see how to record x or y into garageband. I take it you record it into a sample but from there I can't see how to import into a song! With say auria or BM2 ect you arm a track and bingo but I think I am missing something blindingly obvious here.

  • What are the x or y apps your using?
They need to be supported by audiobus.

  • Forget the above, recorded in audio recorder not sampler. What a kxxb

    Cheers

@Ukmadstu Open garageband in audiobus then you have to open a new "audio recorder" in garageband, from there garageband tells you what to do :-)

EDIT: I'm too slow. nevermind lol

  • Click on microphone icon. Go to track view choose microphone track. Go back to x or y app, slide downward above GB icon until you see Rec. click on that and record.

  • @Ryan and you thought you were slow. Lol

  • HA! :-))

  • Just made a new Beginners Guide to Audiobus video should be live in around 30 minutes

  • @thesoundtestroom Just for Audiobus in general? Or garageband specific. A garageband one is needed for sure. Would get lots of views too. ;-) I got one i did this morning but it has to wait before i make it public. :-)

  • This one is just for first time users of Audiobus..just a general how to video with stuff about this site, the forum, an example of using Audiobus..just basic stuff..I don't have GB on here at the moment I deleted it the other day, but I will be putting it back on...so one about GB would be most welcome I would think..

  • Audiobus no 1 on the Greek appstore in the music section, Garageband second :)
