  • Everyone brace yourselves for the mass influx of new users... They've got their iOS devices loaded up, pitchforks and torches, and mumbling something about not being able to sleep the last couple of days...
And they are wondering what this midi stuff is all about, anyways??
    :0)

  • My video for beginners and first time users has just gone live, and it's on this forum..

  • Currently number 2 in Top Paid in Germany, behind an app to watch German TV on the iPad. Well done, particularly getting Apple on board.

I hadn't heard about this program / tech till yesterday's Garage Band update but I'm glad I did. I'm a tinkerer musically but I've been desperately wanting to easily get sounds from other apps into Garage Band (like Animoog, which I'm also pleased finally has proper track recording support). Just added a whole swathe of apps to my app shopper wishlish to keep track of.

  • Welcome, tarasis! I'll warn you, though...you may be compelled to buy every Audiobus compatible app our there. It's addictive ;-) I would highly recommend Samplr and BeatMaker2. I could name lots of others, but these are the first two that spring to mind. Have fun!

    .

  • And is Michael going to upgrade his camper van?

  • I take back any negative comments I made earlier in this discussion...the addition of GB is obviously a decision of pure genius.

  • @tarasis welcome. You might want to get Sampletank which will be Audiobus compatible shortly. One of the best imo as far as sound samples.

  • @mgmg4871.....is sampletank really getting on the bus...that would be brilliant..

  • @thesoundtestroom, IK says so...even in this forum they've made that comment.

  • @thesoundtestroom yes sir. The Dev confirmed it on this forum. They updated recently and said next update would include AB support. Also there other apps would be next. Igrand and ielectric piano.

  • Thanks for the welcome, and I'll check out the suggestions.

One thing I was about to comment on was the shame that recording seemed to be limited to 15second blocks in GB, then I realized I needed to set Automatic for the section length. Doh.

  • I did a Guitarism recording test in GB via the bus. But instead of creating an 'audio' track for it, I created an 'Amplifier' track. In other words I plugged Guitarism into GB's amp sims. Worked like a charm!

  • mgmg4871...oh man that's going to be sooooooo good...

  • What's good too about recording into a GB amp track is that the amp sim is an output effect. In other words you can switch amps or stomp boxes all you want and really tweak your sound after the fact.

  • Interesting! How do the amps and stomp boxes compare to the likes of Jam Up and Amplitube?

  • They're not bad but do fall short in comparison to those dedicated apps

  • Of course if I have the dedicated apps in the input slot, I still don't have much benefit with GB, beyond some of the smart instruments.

i dont know if this helps ...you can establish the lenght of your song first in gb...then you can export the song as a whole

  • @AkaMarko Wow, thanks for the tip! That is awesome that they allowed that, given that there are only a handful of apps that would really benefit from it. I feel a video coming...

  • @Rhism, I wasn't sure so I just tried it and was pleasantly surprised. I might do a video as well on this nice feature.

  • What you do with GB is email the song to yourself as an m4a then use open in or drop into dropbox and use audioshare..then open in cubasis or another daw and carry on..so there sre ways..what I did like when I did a test record with GB earlier are the little app icons you get in GB for each app you record, a nice touch.

  • Thanks for the info about recording into a guitar amp track - I did a quick test earlier, but didn't turn on monitor so didn't think it was working - Doh!

  • Actually you can bypass the Audioshare step by long pressing the file. All apps that will play file will be listed as icons.

  • One teensy problem. Garageband loses any Jam Session connections when switching between Apps, whether using Audiobus or otherwise.

You could still do Jam Sessions, but if you decide to momentarily tweak something in another App, everyone would need to start again and reconnect so it's a bit cumbersome in practice.

Kind of a shame as the addition of Audiobus support had made me want to use this feature a bit more, and it's the only iOS music App I know of with this type of wireless multitrack recording functionality.

  • Tell that to the GarageBand team in a review on the App store.

  • And done.

When I wrote my review it brought up my previous criticism of GarageBand.

It seems I'm not as cranky about its shortcomings now as I was then, so I guess that's progress.
