One Synth, One loop, One FX suite: The Blamsoft Free App Challenge
At the suggestion of @klownshed this is a cross post of an idea suggested by @Fruitbat1919’s original thread here: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/60849/when-is-the-music-your-own#latest
What makes your music your own, asks @Fruitbat1919 ? What if everyone just had the same limited set of tools to work with, how different and individual could you make your piece?
Welp, let’s find out, shall we?
These are the tools, all free and no subs required:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/viking-synth/id1085274012, plus the free Blamsoft fx - reverb, overdrive, filter, chorus, and bitcrusher.
Yes, that Amen break. Surprise us with it, chopped sliced, slowed, whatever… Prove it is more than a cliche at this point.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/80/The_Amen_Break,_in_context.ogg
And these are the rules.
Any DAW, any sequencers and modulators (MIDIlfos etcetera.) are permitted. Outboard and ‘production’ tools eg compressors, eqs, are between you and your conscience.
You can use any amount of instances of the synth and fx, or none. Ditto the break. Play live or sequence. But if you use an external primary instrument, eg guitar, flute etcetera, it must go through at least one Blamsoft device.
You can mess with the break ‘offline’ with wav editing tools, but the ‘performance’ loop featured in your vid, if you choose to use the break, must be just the final wav you have made of it.
Maximum piece length: 3 minutes.
And you must post your final ‘performance’ mix as a screen grab video, shared from YouTube or elsewhere, as proof of your working out.
Deadline Sunday Midnight your local time, one week hence: 26th May.
Who’s up for it?
Comments
Ok will have a go, but will probably take me longer to work out posting on YouTube than it will making some music lol
@Svetlovska
Hitch already. EG Nodes can’t see the Amen Break. What am I doing wrong?
@Svetlovska
You may also want to link the other people that showed interest when you suggested this on my thread, just incse they don’t see this thread
I’ll try. Time permitting.
I’ll stay within the spirit of the challenge and just use Viking, the Amen break and the blamsoft fx. Nothing else. Anything extra kind of defeats the point of it.
Should be fun. I hope I get time.
@Svetlovska
Is it an .ogg file? Tried loading it in AudioShare and that doesn’t play it either.
Anyone have it in WAV?
Sounds chosen
Yep, the Wikipedia clip is an .ogg file, unfortunately. You’ll need to convert it, or find a wav version online somewhere.
For what it’s worth, wavebox will load ogg files and export them as something else ….

Thanks, but found a wav version.
I'm up for it, but here's the caveat. I'd rather avoid posting to Youtube. Could I upload the video to my Dropbox instead and then link it here?
And, I plan to make this track in Nanostudio 2. Regarding non-Blamsoft effects, I think my conscious is telling me to use two non-Blamsoft effects - NS2's internal limiter (which already comes in NS2) on the master track only, and Youlean's Loudness Meter on the master track only (which is a free plugin that has an IAP to unlock graphs, but unlocking graphs isn't necessary to monitor the LuFS levels).
Indeed, when it comes to mixing and getting levels correct, I'm rather persnickety. 😂
EDIT: I may use NS2's EQ on a couple of tracks, but only for the sake of rolling off the low end to avoid a muddy mix.
EDIT 2: I don't feel like faffing about with a wav editor to cover the ogg file, so I screen recorded the break from youtube and will extract the audio via Koala. I won't edit it in Koala but rather chop it up in NS2 Slate.
Ok. Here is my effort, ‘Replicator’:
All screen recorded live in AUM, just added my, ahem, ‘branding’ to the front in iMovie before upload to the YouTubes. Audio loops are just the Amen Break, edited in Wavebox (sliced only, no fx), then exported to AudioShare for input to AUM and run veeeeery sloooooowly. (Thanks to @BiancaNeve for the Wavebox tip - I didn’t know it could do that, worked like a charm.)
Sequencing: a couple of Neons, a ShiftBud and a Cykle. MIDILFOs modulating the F16 filter resonance.
As to the debate it is engaging in? Welp, it definitely sounds like me. This of course may not be a good thing…
Cool. I’ve just done an intro so far lol
Even though I failed to strictly follow the app letter of the law, the hardest part of the ‘game’ for myself, is trying to make a 3 minute piece of music. I think most of my meanderings are about 8 minutes. The closest I get to 3 minutes are the hundreds of aborted idea pieces I make.
I fancy some vocal type sounds on mine, so I’m messing about with filtering and Flux chopping, but not very successful so far. I will admit I’m finding this fun though.
All done. 😎

Like it. Now I have to figure out how I’m recording and posting mine as it’s years since I’ve done this lol
in the spirit of the challenge, I’m trying to keep the preset intact, but in the spirit of tidying up envelopes need tweaking.
The sample I’m just chopping up and constructing what I can from it. Feels weird not using a sampler, even just for pitching and filtering. But that’s the challenge. lack of a decent eq is frustrating & fun.
I can see at this early stage, my workarounds are going to cause issues.
I’ll need to bounce down. I don’t know how this fits without showing my working, so you might have to just believe I painstakingly layered 12 patches & sculpted them with the shovel that is f16 multiple multiple times to get some weird sounding stabs n pads.
Why not use a sampler? You get to slice and dice the sample, samplers are quite good at that. I wouldn’t have thought using a sampler with the amen break as the sample is in anyway cheating? Chopping up the audio on the timeline is no different to slicing it in a sampler and playing it with MIDI? Using f16 as the filter instead of the sampler’s filter keeps it fair I think?
Slate and Obsidian can load OGG
Fair enough.
I agree. I've used other apps to chop, slice and dice, as my host doesn't do much of that sort of thing. The initial idea only came from what we would all do different with the same loop, synth presets and some basic stuff. I don't see any issues with using different sequencers or chopping tools as that fits in well with the initial discussion.
Besides, I've cheated and added a delay app anyway....sue me lol
Okay, okaaaay, aaaay, aaay, aay, ay, y
That okay needs syncing lol
So, I have a screen recording of my work in progress, that I’ve trimmed in iMovie. How can I post it here?
Gave it a shot and made a hypnotic Techno thing: https://streamable.com/d01wdc
Updated version: https://streamable.com/f0v97c
I've tried to create all the drums from the short amen break benginning, then I've used 2 instances of Viking synth for the bleeps and ambience. Took me about an hour or so.
Found it quite challenging to get by without a proper delay, because those in the reverb and chorus are tricky to dial in right. The techno kick and rumble sounds kinda weird like the drums in geenral without a proper drum machine 😵💫
Extra plugins used are knock clipper and EQ560 to carve out a kick from the amen sample, and nolimits and magic deatheye on the master, and neon to seuqnece the bleeps. I might try to record a better performance of 3 minutes, the first one was 4 minutes and too long because I wanted to show all the layers..
Now I had no idea lol. Ah well. I got it done. 🩷
Cheers mate! Best of luck.
OK I'm posting my work in progress as I make stuff so slowly that it will probably never get finished. I'm trying some lead lines and vocal bits that's why the track is so basic so far. I have a habit of getting bored and sidetracked with other stuff though, so hey....at least I attempted to start something
Like it. Can't say I was brave enough to stick to the Balm apps, I don't think I've started any track of late without Other Dessert Cities lol and my brain refused to try this time!
Sounds good so far.
I was surprised how much youtube sucks life out of even a basic track. No wonder artists pay people to master a track to sound good on different media.
That's one of a couple reasons I didn't want to use Youtube to share the video. 😂 It's fine for a demo, like from an OP-1 Field, but for the final product it sucks. 😂
