It is not possible to charge iPad when using a CCK no matter what USB hub is used.

Not true, mine will trickle charge while connected (even though the iPad says it's not possible), it's not as fast as usual by any means, but doable. The hub is a Plugable and it looks like they don't make the exact model I have anymore, but this looks like almost the same thing:

But you don't have a CCK in the chain. The iPad is not "hosting" the USB hub. You are just connecting a lightning sync/charging cable to the USB hub, correct?

When you have a CCK or Lightning to USB camera adapter in the chain (iPad is acting as the USB host), the iPad cannot be charged.

In order to charge the iPad (in host mode) while using a USB hub, Apple would need to create one of these but replace the HDMI port with a USB port. Notice the lightning charging port. I send them emails about it from time to time. Of course, they never reply. :(

  • Like the iPhone, ifixit.com will likely have staff in Australia who buy one in-store next Friday, tear it open and reveal all the parts.

And tech blogs who got one ahead of launch for review, but aren't allowed to publish any reviews yet, will probably also run software diagnostics to confirm.

Either way we won't get the official word before next Friday ...hopefully confirming 2GB ram.

  • If it has 1GB Apple are simply greedy.

No, I do use a CCK and the iPad is in charge of the hub. That's one thing I love about my set up, easy for me to swap out the laptop for the iPad and still have access to my audio interface and midi controllers.

If I plug in the hub to the iPad I do get the "this device does not support charging" message, but the iPad will still trickle charge over time.

The fact that you are getting that message at all makes me think you are using the iPad in slave mode, like when you plug it into a computers USB port and it only gets 500mA it will display that message.

But if you are sure you are using the iPad in host mode with a CCK in the chain, and it is still trickle charging your iPad, then I apologize and you have literally officially blown my mind and destroyed everything I have known to be true about iPads and USB hubs.

I got an order in early this morning. It is 2GB RAM btw...

I was previously using an iPad2 with an Apogee Quartet. My new setup will be the iPad Air 2 hosting an ADAT USB device with a higher end external converter. My only concern is no longer being able to keep the iPad charged all the time...

Hoping for a 24bit update for AB and Loopy too...

  • edited October 2014

Audiobus 2 uses IAA now as it's backbone which is already 24 bit so I think AB and Loopy are already there. They didn't make a big deal about it so it was easy to miss.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just double-checked because it's been awhile since I paid attention to this. You're right, the message only pops up in slave mode, not when I use the iPad as host. Sorry for the confusion. But I do still get a very slow charge in host mode it looks like, it'll probably only go up 20-30% overnight, but might be enough to stop much draw if you have a need for that.

@Yowza That might be the case for AB but Loopy still puts out 16bit files...

Wired article that claims the iPad Air 2 has 2gb of ram. They don't quote any sources so who knows if this is accurate either. A Forbes article says it's, "widely expected to be 2gb ram". It does seem very out of sync with the rest of the tablet market to not be increasing the ram. We'll know for sure in a week or so. I think Apple stock prices will take a hit if it's only 1gb ram.

I agree. 1GB of RAM would limit developers, especially with the 64 bit CPU.

    It's 2GB. I'd bet the farm.

Why? No other compelling reason to upgrade LOL

  • I'm going for it: Ten bucks on 4 gigs.

  • 4 gigs now? Hot damn can't wait to play with that!

You are mad sir, but of the optimistic kind, and that I admire...

Not to doubt you, but I never heard of that site. How would they know given it hasn't been released yet?

From the Yahoo link "...but the exact specs are not yet known. It's rumoured....."

    They don't know.

  • This game kills me.

    Sucks.

  • If we're playing the heresay game, I'll add these to the 2 gigs of RAM side.

Time will tell. It's not easy playing my instruments with my fingers crossed.

If 2 GB is at hand, then I'm ready to move from my ipad 4.

I'm still annoyed that we don't have precision input (for drawing/writing), and that we aren't getting a ppi bump.

Looking at the current apple lineup I have to believe that if they do release a "pro" model with those features, the base model will open at $1000.

Their pricing structure at the moment strikes me as old apple elitism, and I'm having the first notions that this whole company can slip out from under Cook's feet if someone like Jobs isn't around to give him some perspective. And having a stinking scumbag like Icahn having any influence on Apple should make us all worry about just how close to the shitter this thing might be.

This presentation really stripped a lot of the confidence I had in apple last year that they would be able to follow through this year and make some dramatic moves.

But I feel compelled to upgrade this year since they will undoubtably slowly make my 4 choke on iOS updates if I don't obey the two year cycle.

I'll be getting the 64 GB Air 2 and also the mid-tier Mac Mini.

Every thing is relative. Tim Cook and Apple are doing just fine. There was a reason why Steve Jobs choose him as his successor. Watch the next earnings call and with a fresh product line..... Tim Cook is doing just fine.

So last night I thought you were drunk posting (ha, j/k) and then I see this:

    http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2404005

It does appear that there are TWO separate RAM chips on the A8X board image that is circulating the web (one out in the open and another under the metal "crossbar") and if they really are 2GB each...

Here's a brightness/contrast adjusted image of the (supposed) iPad Air 2 board and the current iPad Air board for your speculative enjoyment. It is clear by the markings that the RAM chips aren't the same between the two boards so the RAM chip(s) on the A8X board probably aren't 1GB. So unless that A8X board is for the upcoming iPad Pro or something, this could get really interesting. :)
