If those are 2x2gb ram modules then it's more likely the board comes from ipad pro. Apple are not exactly known for generosity.

If that is the case then consider this:
Why would an iPad Pro still have 16GB flash memory? You'd think the flash memory for a pro model would be 32GB at absolute minimum. http://m.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=44563
If the iPad Pro is built with an A8X chip, then I would think it's release would likely be this year yet we didn't hear anything about it. I suppose it could be announced in spring or summer though.
I can't wait for the teardown. @Tarekith- It's all on you finding that hammer at this point.
4gb would be insanely awesome
Did they show gut shots in the keynote? I don't remember.
No, Apple wants people to stop focusing on the hardware aspect, they never publish the specs of the iPad and iPhone other than what "A" chip it has.
I hope you are right @Ringleader
The more I think about it, an increase from 1GB straight to 4GB is absurd. It just can't be. Unless the new iPad chief hardware engineer is a member of this forum or Apple is determined to kill the competition once and for all.
@Syrupcore - You've had your fun. Time to fess up why you posted that 4GB comment. Was it because of that other thread I referenced?

I'll take you up on your bet. :-) It's 2 GB. There's an Apple engineer who is a member of iOS Musicians on Facebook and he confirmed it yesterday. :-)
I don't understand why they don't pimp a RAM increase. Any good reason not to make a song and dance about a tangible new benefit?
Because I think many people in the world don't even know what ram is, people who are tech nerds like most of us here forget that. They probably just want to know if it works and trusts that apple made something that did.
One example is my wife, who has an iPad 3 and has no issues with it. She's a speech therapist, so she uses it every day at work plus all the time at home.
I just updated it to iOS 7 for her a few weeks ago, not because she was waiting for audiobus to work but because she didn't care what os it was running since the apps she uses were working.
And interestingly, I played with a new band last night and the keyboardist works for Microsoft- interesting perspective from him on all of this!
Now there's an unfulfilled tease
But, yeah, I hear you on 'don't know/don't care' as regards tech specs....
Issue is of course-they could keep specs out of the keynotes and press releases for consumers and still provide the info for those interested in the technology. They're going to find out anyway once someone does a teardown, only a week or so later. Why not divulge the big secret right away?
Some will be holding back until they know for sure. But I guess they can sell all they can provide anyway...
I agree, I love specs and tech info, and am proudly a nerd.
As for Microsoft man, didn't mean to leave you hanging! He said he has a bunch of vst's loaded on his surface and wants to try them on a gig, but is worried about what happens if it crashes. My ipad has never crashed onstage since I have my current setup (with the akai synthstation it was a bit dicey...but that was not a great device).
But, as he said, they treat him well and the checks clear. Still, his wife has an ipad and iPhone...;-)

Actually, I was.
Apple doesn't compete on specs. They definitely don't want to be competing on specs for mobile devices because the commodity hardware makers can easily out do them. As soon as comparison shopping comes down to 5-8 tech line item charts Apple will be at a disadvantage (whether or not the sum product is better).
Makes (marketing) sense.
...but why they talk then about 3 billion transistors? I'm sure more people know what RAM is
O.k.... i bet my 10 bucks it will have 2 GB. 4? Well, then i buy it
"3 billion transistors"
sounds kinda awesome.
"2 gigs of ram"
snooze, you know?
Don't get me wrong—I wish they'd stop being coy about the ram (even outside of the announcements). But it doesn't do anything for them and indeed likely works against them.
Specific groups of users care about certain tech specs (we care about ram, for instance) but the general public doesn't anymore. There is still some hold over (megapixels come to mind) but for the most part, people want software/experience. In 1998 when the world was 'which machine am I going to buy to run Windows on', meaning most machines delivered the same experience, tech specs made more sense; get the most X, Y and Z you can afford. But, when the sum of that parts include hard-to-put-in-a-chart variables (UX, integrated services...), tech specs can do a product a disservice.
Gruber:
But "we double the RAM" sounds also nice
Turns out there is a gut shot in that 4GB thread. After some brightness/contrast adjustment, it looks to be a match to the leaked image. Curious to see what that other chip that looks like a second ram chip actually turns out to be.
But "we quadruple the RAM" sounds nicest yet
Maybe they are just 2x 1gb ram chips ?
I'm pretty excited about this iPad...Maybe I'm just a sucker for the 3billion transistor thing? but is that a lot for audio processing?
Do you think it'll handle 8 live channels into AB with effects and record the sum into Loopy???
More important.... Could it run finally a full Alchemy synth. I think for most musicians the CPU and RAM would be balanced now with 2 GB and the new CPU.... (of course not for me
Besides the ram, other questions remain...
Will the new laminated screen have a different feel, will it be more, or less sensitive to pressure and velocity changes...
Will the CPU generate more heat in intensive use and how will the thinner unit as a whole cope?
Will it be more vulnerable?
I can't wait for the Air 2 to reach users and reviewers....but I will, and then decide.

I have way smaller wishes I would be happy if this finally will be the first iPad that can run Auria without a hickup and without that damn"low memory"message(s) in every second project.So,2GB Ram for me please.Thanks.
Oh,forgot theres a really unrealistic wish left as well:that apple fucking got their shit together and improved the half baked mess, called IAA in iOS8.1
yep,i know.Not gonna happen before iOS9.If ever.

Nice bit of detective work. CSI for iOS.
Passmark benchmark site first iPad Air 2 benchmarks? Marked as iPad 5,4 for some reason.
This would indicate 3 CPU cores for A8X and...
2Gb memory...
(touch or hover over the corresponding results bar to see details)
http://www.iphonebenchmark.net/cpumark_chart.html
http://www.iphonebenchmark.net/memmark_chart.html
These are user-submitted scores and some of the scores seem a bit low (memory and 2D/3D) so maybe either the benchmark software or iOS need optimization for these.
What makes it indicate 3 cores or 2GB ram? Nevermind, the hover over wasn't showing but I see it now.
The disk score shows huge gains too:
http://www.iphonebenchmark.net/diskmark_chart.html
@Ringleader When you touch the colored bars in the diagram a small popup shows some details, including cores and RAM used.
3 cores would account nicely for the excessive increase in the number of transistors that many tech sites could not explain.
Yeah there must need to be some optimization yet. This shows the Air 2 getting beat by a 5s. But OTOH, it also shows the 1st Air getting beat by a 5 and 5c? And stranger yet, my 5s has over twice the performance of my Air? http://www.iphonebenchmark.net/passmark_chart.html
