If we try to explain exactly what is a "virtual analog" synth where should we start? To my understanding, it's just a less stable and chaotic oscillator, but I might be wrong. Analog to me means "less perfect" like with an analog delay (it repeats what you just played and degrade it over time).
It’s exactly this, subtractive synthesis with colorful filters.
In a pure sense it should mean that the app's algorithms for such things as oscillators, distortion, and filters are modeled to behave as specific non-digital components and circuits do. The degree to which that is actually true vs. just adding imperfections intended to impart such a feel isn't always clear cut.
The funny thing is that Discovery is a virtual analog implementation of a virtual analog original, the Nord Lead 2. The Clavia designers were probably not trying to add analog drift and timing errors to their software.
And they've often been criticised for being too clean or artificial for that exact reason - check the comments on Doug's video for example. I like the clean character personally - got plenty of effects or warmer synths for when more analogue character is warranted. The early Nords have a special sound that's all their own.
In a nutshell, aside from some criticism, this thing sounds very good.
Exactly. In its simplest terms it means a virtual representation on an analog piece of gear/hardware. However that leave a lot of room for interpretation, and variance.
Disco don’t play when it comes to the sound quality.
I was hoping someone could give me an idea on the cpu pull?
Obviously this is relative to your device, session size, and other apps, but compared to other apps you use would you say it’s, light, medium, heavy, etc…?
I have run 10 Discoveries in Cubasis 3 on iPad Air 4, the CPU is 5%, the DSP is 22%. If I was to try and run this many ButterSynths the iPad would die lol, I would say it is low to medium compared to many other apps.
New update released. The version info states in the last sentence: ... "we hope these updates improve your experience" I'm not sure how to interpret that but, a little pressured maybe ..? Or, annoyed. Hopefully not the latter because I hope this will get the feature set it deserves because there's still no automation. A Lamborghini without wheels, sure it sounds great but where does it go..
Thanks @rapidfire That is everything I need to know. lol. The original OB and OPL were both pretty light. besides the great sound quality, Disco DSP seems to be really good with merging great sound with the lightweight performance.
I knew this was an inevitable purchase since release… been wanting a new synth too.
And another update…. Cheers!
Maybe reading into it a bit, but what do I know. It sounds pretty innocuous by it self.
I hope this sentence improves your experience. lol. But seriously it just sounds like a blanket closing statement to me, but I haven’t read the App Store version details.
Parameter exposure please!
Contact the dev directly -- they don't seem to visit this forum.
"I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
I have contacted them before but I don’t get a response. Parameter exposure seems a logical thing to implement but who am I.
I agree. I won’t be interested until the parameters are exposed.
Ah it was only because someone had been met with some, well not good, tone from them/him(?) on a question about fixing all shite (free interpretation by a tired me) just after the release. Thought I had included that back story 😅
I as well sent them an email about parameter exposure. The more the merrier or is this the wrong occasion for that.😃
Maybe I’m missing something here, I only ever use Cubasis 3 and all the MIDI parameters are exposed, is this not the case with other DAWs?
MIDI CC contols aren't the same thing as AUv3 parameters. The issue is people want to use the host AUv3 parameter management system, not the internal midi CC mappings. To me that isn't a huge big deal. In fact I prefer to use internal CC mappings for portability between hosts. But I think the other issue is not all possible controls have midi cc's attached to them.
To me the major factor is that AUv3 parameters are fine controls whereas midi is very coarse.
Yet the majority of people control them via midi, which negates that advantage.
A lot of the people that care about exposed AU parameters are not using MIDI to control them. They use automation lanes in DAWs or with non-MIDI LFOs and envelopes in hosts like Drambo and ApeMatrix.
Yes, I would love to use the lfo’s in Apematrix on Discovery. Same problem with Sunrizer, it only has a few parameters exposed.
*btw, I added a request as well, but I wonder if they get it, as you have to fill in a webmail form and an order no, but I don’t have an order no so I just fill in 000. It mentioned after applying that they cannot proceed if you don’t have a valid order no. So, I tried and we’ll see.

It was regarding their sloppy job on the OB-Xd 3, but the same seemed to happen on Discovery initially as well. They release products that are not properly tested and lacking, or having inferior functionality in different areas.
However, it seems they are slowly getting their s**t together, and hopefully the’ll fix the issues remaining in OB-Xd as well. Since they only randomly answer to feedback, there is no way unfortunately to tell if they even get the messages…
And: they were very clear that they are pro’s and that they don’t need any help by anyone when offered. If I had any issues I could just get my money back. And.. to make their precious app work I was told to delete apps from other developers… yeah. There we are.

Double post, deleted, sorry.
Public posts to their FB page seems to be a pretty good way to get their attention.
Apart from the un-exposed AUParameters Discovery is pretty much finished at this point.
What really puzzles me is that OB-Xd V3 had all the AUParameters visible from day one while in Discovery they are still awol...
