Teenage Engineering OP-XY leaked / released later today

edited November 14 in Other Music Content

Looks like Guitar Centre dropped the ball and leaked the first images of the OP-XY that launches later today.

Looks like the OP-Z on steroids…

p.s. the price is supposedly $2300

Can we avoid the usual debate on Teenage Engineering and their pricing policy ?

It’s a lot of money, I’ll try and do what I did with my OP-1F and wait six months and catch one cheaper from an unhappy early adopter on eBay. 🤣

Seems like a good plan. Do we have a spec yet?

I’ve not seen anything official yet but it launches at some point today so it shouldn’t be too long until will find out, the text I did see mentioned a focus on sequencing instead of tape like on the OP-1(F).

  • $2300 = 46 years of Logic Pro on iPad (not allowing for inflation).

Or one iPad Pro and 26 years of Logic.

Or one MacBook Air, Logic Pro 11 indefinitely and two OP-Zs

    Or 11 Grip cars.

Just messing, I'm sure it's one of those IYKYK situations too... Worth it with knobs on to the right person.

  • Looks beautiful, right up my alley. Definitely curious to see how much overlap there is with the OP-Z.

  • Looks like the OP-1 Field and OP-Z combined into one device. I'm curious to see if Jeremy (RedMeansRecording) will pick one up and see what he does with it. 🙏

  • LMAO at the price.

  • I’ll just wait for the new Jim Audio app coming out 😗

  • With that price, I'm not gonna regret just recently getting the op-z

  • Teenage Engineering OP-XY specs

Looks like a blend of an 80s cassette recorder and a "Mystery Meat UI World Championship" runner-up competing in the "quackery pricing" category 😃

(yes I know, strong opinion... take it with a molecule of NaCl 🙄)

Thanks for being the other logical person in the thread 😂 (just kidding. Mostly!)

Lol. Yeah, the price of this is nearly half of what the total price of my car loan is. 😂

Lol. Yeah, the price of this is nearly half of what the total price of my car loan is. 😂

Yes, this is almost exactly how much I spent on my 2006 Nissan Micra 7 years ago (still going with a total of $500 in repairs).

Yes yes I know, the price is justified etc. because of the tactile buttons etc. blahblah... but just HOW much is this tactile feel worth? 🤔

  • Yes, the price is out of scale with pretty much anything out there. But it is surely calculated to invoke a response about the instrument itself and its value. There's an evil genius behind this pricing. I'm at once outraged and intrigued, asking myself (against my will and all logic), Hmm, how is this $300 better than the OP1Field? Which is a stupid question, but there it is.

And it's not simply the tactile quality that would justify it, but Teenage Engineering's inspiring workflow. Who knows what's in the XY, but the sequencer on the OP-Z is magical and mysterious. I find myself wandering down paths on it that I never would have on any iOS instrument. The downside for me with the OP-Z is that the sounds are kind of pedestrian, though the ability to sequence effects in surprising and evolving ways helps.

In the end, you're paying for an inspiration machine.

I could purchase a bluetooth control surface for my iPad if I really wanted to at a fraction this OP-XY costs, as well as the latest iPad Pro 12.9" with max storage. My Mini 7 works just as well however and is the most portable device imho. :)

Paying for inspiration is lame. That means gear-fetish wins over over musicality etc. but this isn't even vintage or high quality gear. It reeks of price gouging and bleh consumerism.

  • I think I’ve got all the bases covered of this device with Drambo, Tera Pro and Ableton Move. So it’s a pass for me.

  • I said: “oooh” then saw the price lmao

    Yes, I stopped watching after 1 minute (the TikTokMaximumPossibleAttentionSpan™️ in 2024 😜) of all-marketing, zero-substance.

I can’t afford this thing, but it does sound rather nice:

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=_D25pdAMUVI

  • Looks great to me, lots of performance controls and the best parts of the sequencer from the OP-Z with the synths, better sampling facilities, and more from the OP-1F. This might just make me want to sell the OP-1F, as the workflow on this is a bit more my style. Plus, undo!

Totally agree, which is why no one every buys a second guitar or second reverb plug-in or....

Joking aside: yes, it does reek of consumerism, but depending on your perspective, the innovation might offset that.
