Well, I think you will find you are totally wrong there.
The OP-XY is definately black and white. See for youself:
Perhaps that's why it is so expensive?
Sorry... couldn't resist. I'll leave now...
If this is a branding model, then maybe my previous accountant, who billed me EUR 750 for filing a capital gains tax return (12 simple shares purchase/sale transactions total) should rename themselves "Teenage Accountants" 😃
I feel your pain. Faced a similar bill from my accountants last year for my first ever CGT return, and am currently bracing for impact re this years second (and likely last) ever…
That is a fairly bold statement.
One could say you are correct - it's not "the same" - not exact same sound or tactile experience.
However, you are mistaken in that a current iPad plus available apps easily overwhelms this TE device in sound and options.
It's not just about features per dollar (euro, etc). There's something to be said for a device that's purpose built with a specific workflow in mind, especially if you're a fan of that workflow and want a robust feeling product to use it on.
On the fence and don't have the means to afford it? Happily there's iPads, Volcas, Airas, small MPC's, and you name it out there that can get you what you want for cheaper. Fan of the TE OP-Z workflow, its limitations, and its rather unique sequencer but didn't like the cheaper plastic case and all the button combos you needed to memorize? Great, now you have an option too.
Geez people, there's enough negativity out there in the world right now, we don't need harass each other over our individual gear choices. What happened to just making fun of drummers all the time? Those were the days....
+1
I'm totally up for that.
I'm with you. Hey, if I were in a different income bracket I would buy this without hesitation. I think many people in this economy feel a little priced out - can't get in the closed gate, so to speak. I don't think this is harassment, but I could be mistaken.
There are more affordable grooveboxes now than there's ever been before. I would have killed to have had this many options back when I was getting into things. Plenty of open gates to go through out there still. 🤗
I wonder, which grooveboxes interest you the most? And if you own any, which do you have? Now I'm rather curious.
The Octatrack has been a staple of my live sets since it came out, so that one will always be special to me. Being able to both continuously sample and playback said samples is great for song transitions.
The MC707 is another one I've been using a lot since it came out. The MC505 was my intro to electronic music making (well the MC303 was, but it was the 505 I could first perform with), so the 707 feels like home to me. I'm a sucker for Roland sounds, and it also lets you randomize sounds to make new ones, which I like a lot. Taking a break from it now, but that one will always be around here I think.
The OP-Z would be the other most used groovebox in recent years. Truly portable, great sound, really easy to create evolving sequences, dead simple to load sounds in, and a lot more performance functionality than you'd think in a small package. Downside, attracts lots of ants.
Currently I've been spending the last two months super deep into the Digitakt 2. After many, many years of Octratrack live sets, I'm getting a little fried on it. Nothing against the box, I've just used the shit out of it for years now. The DT2 brings a lot of what I like about the OT into a more modern and smaller package. I LOVE how easy it is to sample on the DT2, recording and then slicing external synths for me is so nice and to the point. I was planning on spending all winter working on a new live set, but it's been only 2 months and I'm almost done with 2 hours of playable material. I'm very impressed with the Digitakt 2, Elektron did a great job making a lot of things that made their earlier grooveboxes so well regardied even easier to use IMVHO.
Also have an Ableton Move and Push 3S, and while I've used both a lot while testing for Ableton and I have a bunch of material written on both, I'm not totally there yet with these. Really has nothing to do with how capable both of these boxes are, and more to do with needing a short break from Ableton stuff after so many years of running their forums and beta testing. Feels a bit too much like going to work for me still, I'm sure I'll be stoked on them in a few months when I can revisit with a fresh mindset.
Note however still feels fresh and fun for me, and I genuinely think of it as a groovebox too. So I use that all the time to come up with ideas I can record into whatever groovebox I happen to using. Lately, the DT2.
Until the OP-XY was announced, I was giving serious thought to putting together an hour set with some of the Roland Aira Compact units mounted to a guitar pedal board. I think that would be hella fun, you'd get some good sounds and decent sequencing in a nice little compact set up. I'll likely revisit this idea soon.
@Tarekith An excellent read I must say. I will say I do miss my OP-1 Field terribly. I still have the tapes backed up on Dropbox funny enough. Those were some fun times using that magic box.
I actually would love to play with an OP-XY, but that price is very prohibitive, even for a professional like me. But I will look into the kit you've just mentioned and see if anything grabs my attention that I could use in conjunction with my Mini 7.
As far as my preferred grooveboxes, OP-1f aside, they all seem to exist on iOS. I plan to eventually get back into GR-16 (it's been years), and BAM looks like fun as well. But Koala is my favourite. Okay, technically it's a sampler, but it feels like a sample-based groovebox to me. 🤷♂️
I'm curious to see if getting the XY makes me want to sell the OP-1F or not tbh. That tape workflow is so unique (these days) and while it's frustrating sometimes it definitely leads you down some interesting roads. Feels like a classic to me so I'm a little loath to part ways especially after knowing how much I regretted selling the original OP-1 with all its faults.
Then again, it was selling a mint original TB303 in order to purchase the very first iPhone that led me to this great group of people here. So I already know not to hang on to things for sentiment's sake.
Why did you sell your OP-1F again? You seemed so excited by it.
I couldn't afford the monthly payments anymore, so
I sold it to pay off the balance of said monthly payments. That, and it was about 3-4 months since I had used it last.
Fair enough, I've had to do the same with a lot of gear over the years to pay the bills. SP808EX, E-Mu Command Station, Korg Er-1, Polybrute, etc. Sucks, but sometimes it leads to new perspective on music making too.
When I say it’s “not the same” I’m not knocking iOS, I’ve been a happy iPad user for years and also owned an OP-1 & OP-Z and currently own an OP-1F, what I meant is the user experience is not the same, yes you have a bigger variety of options with the iPad and the various ways you can set it up however the OP series you simply turn on and create and it’s a user experience that’s different to the iPad.
Nothing! 😃
Oh I've contested the invoice! And it had a healing effect because that experience made me ditch accountants for good as well and it took me literally one hour to do the CGT part of the first tax return I ever did in my life. Supposing that an accountant should be faster, they've essentially billed me EUR 1000 per hour for mechanical monkey work, which I found a bit of a stretch so there's that 😃 anyway let's stay on topic.
That is just a nice way of saying "They're manipulating customers to justify objectively outrageous prices", isn't it?
Oh did ya? So this ripping-offage seems to be widespread 😄 (it took me literally 1 hour to do my first ever CGT return on my own, so they billed me roughly EUR 1000 per hour)
I think this would be good paired with the OP-1f. The OP-XY excels at the things the OP-1f doesn't.
A person could connect the two via MIDI, sequence 8+ tracks of drums (so allowing a different envelope for each drum) on the OP-XY then record that to stereo track 1 of the OP-1f to take advantage of the tape styles. You could end up with 32 tracks if you kept doing it. Or 16 tracks of drums and synths with stereo guitars and a vocal, etc. I think there are a lot of interesting possibilities.
I'm about to put a synth and some pedals up for sale so the OP-XY is on my radar. I would like a hardware sequencer, this looks interesting.
I like the OP-1f a lot. I take it with me outside as I live across the road from a park and a creek and there's a spot with benches and tables about 100 feet from my door. So I like having portable gear as I'd rather sit out in the sun than on a chair inside.
Maybe some will come up used, maybe the price will come down. I'm going to keep it in mind.
Yeah.....so...hrmmm...this
Thing...
Is freaking amazing:

First 30 minutes of playing with it, and it's all gelling wonderfully.
My Drambo workflow adapts nicely to the device...I love making something feel vaster on 16 Steps because of the power of Step Components and Playback Division speeds....
You got one ? Congrats dude
Love that you’ve got aquatinted with the device @echoopera … nice sounds, nice art 😊
Thanks @yellow_eyez and @GeoTony
loving this device every single minute:
Sounds awesome - it suits you perfectly man. (I didn’t know you had an op-z too!)
Enjoy it in good health
@echoopera kool, chill track 😻. What are your initial thoughts of build quality?
And that’s why there is no shame in developing a full screen iPad-only / non-auv3 app and asking 100 bucks for it.
Or any alternative environment / that will have a similar outcome.
You can’t scale this device to a iphone.
You could design a similar app for a iPad screen
Just saying😆
Does it run on iPhone or AUV3?
NO
Yeah but no but yeah but no but.
NO😆
I not against auv3. Just against unused potential.
Thanks. The build quality is as good or better than the OP-1F
Ahh, great chill track mate. Almost gives me GAS for the OP-XY, almost. (I can't purchase it to try it myself sadly, but that's okay. I can live vicariously through your music. Cheers. 🍻)
Kool! 👍 Good to know 😺 I look forward to hearing more 🔊 Keep up the good work! 🎹🎛🚀
There's no shame indeed and it would still be vastly better value for money, but unfortunately, the market largely works on emotions and marketing, not objectivity.
How well a self-contained iOS "groovebox" works in the market, EVEN WHEN it does support AUv3 and iPhone, can be seen with NanoStudio 2, which is now being sold off in the virtual clearance bin for $5 😃
Just out of interest it sounds like a glitch about 10 seconds in, then repeats every few bars but not a prominent, is that a bug or intentional?
That's really nice ☺️
