  • yah looks sweet, like all the TE stuff. maybe in the next life!

  • Honestly, it looks fun. It’s just too pricey

  • I don’t care about the price but to me the synths sound weak. I’d rather have one really good synth engine that you can actually tweak out and make your own sounds instead of this preset, 4 knob, mediocre sounding synths. A Digitone synth inside would be perfect.
I haven’t heard one demo where I’ve been like wow that sounds so good. They all sound like a bad 90s synth preset really.
I’ll probably still buy it cause I’m a TE fanboy. 😂

  • Price seems about right to me when you compare the specs to the OP-1F it’s only a little bit more cash but a lot more machine.
As for the T.E. Whatever vs iPad debate, whatever works for you personally is the way forward but I will say if you think an iPad, Apps, audio and midi/CV interfaces plus a midi controller is the same you’re mistaken.

Yeah leave it to Ricky to get the vibes going.

Just downloaded the manual & the XY has what appears to be the same pitch bender as the OP-Z..
..my op-z pitch bend no longer works-which is quite common..Just a heads up for anyone getting/thinking of getting the XY..

  • They showed it in one of the videos, it looks a lot bigger and softer on the XY.

Kool, good to know it’s not the same - hopefully it’s better quality

  • Um, you could buy an few ounces of very high quality pot instead. That’s a year’s worth of inspiration, at least.

    😂💯🪴 Exactly.

  • TE have some serious hallucinations of grandeur.

    First video is up

Right, I couldn't make it past the cringe. Sorry, but I won't be finishing that video. 🤣

It's awkward but kind of funny and gets worse before it gets better. I like the part where the gangster is using the EP-133 KO as a calculator.
The ending has a little more info.

    Well, that sounds excellent.

  • Rephrazer did some of the sounds for the OP-XY I read, I have some of his OP-1F packs and they are excellent.

  • Why that price though? What’s the reasoning? Do they think they’re apple and can get away with it because fanboys?

To be fair to Apple, even the BIGGEST FATTEST iPad is cheaper than this, and, last time I checked, might actually be more capable 😂

Nice! Having Rephazer sounds built in is definitely added value.

  • This look like an amazing piece of gear. If I had much more time and money I would for sure buy it. However I don't and I just bought a much more limited Ableton Move instead. But at the end, I wonder if we can really finish a song completely in such devices. I guess at one moment we have to polish everything in a DAW and the Ableton solution seems to be the way to go imho

Yah time is really the thing. I have way more options and hardware/software potential than I do time to fully enjoy it.

  • looks great, 2300 euro is just absurd for what it does but that's the branding model TE go for. no surprise.
if i was rich I would buy one for sure. however, i could never justify it on my income.

If this is a branding model, then maybe my previous accountant, who billed me EUR 750 for filing a capital gains tax return (12 simple shares purchase/sale transactions total) should rename themselves "Teenage Accountants" 😃

If I rationalize those who buy these projects are patrons who are willing to support tech artists, it all makes more sense to me.

Any other rationalization underscores what an insane waste of money are their products... but to each their own.

  • At this point I’m just curious how much further can they stretch it.
Maybe ‘name your price’ starting from $5000 and let the fanboys decide who’s the most dedicated…
Or sell colours as add on

People who like hardware will continue to like hardware even if cheaper or more efficient options are available. And that’s OK. We like what we like.

But every function demonstrated on the hardware in the video can be replicated on iPad. And I suspect some entrepreneurial developer will quickly do that.

I like Cuckoo. :) Lucky him that he got it for free though. If I got an OP-XY for free, I bet I'd try to churn out a couple EPs with it. Alas, I'm stuck with my all-powerful iPad and tons of apps instead. (I'm being facetious, of course. Grain of salt, please.)

I absolutely do not care what price they choose to charge. I do however mentally estimate any items worth to myself and buy accordingly.

I am eyeing up Polyends Play+ and Synth. Those two items would fit into my setup size wise and be a decent due for on the sofa. Split into two boxes, they give lots of playing surface. Their musical utility is high and have very little overlap with my other hardware.

The TE XY thing looks a nice piece of kit and I would not have an issue buying it if I had more 'spare' money. I don't however personally value it at the asking price, nor do I think it's a better buy beyond many other combinations of devices. The size and battery time are nice if you need them, but I rarely take my gear anywhere beyond camping holidays and I prefer playing surface over a compact nature.

We all judge things on price and worth to us as individuals, and have to make our own minds up as such. I can see a call for some taking the piss out of TE for this and I think it's funny, if not really important, so any real resentment towards them is just pointless.

As for individuals buying such items, why not? We all have things that simply are not really worth the cost, or don't have a good cost / utility to oneself ratio - I have a ttrpg book collection that rarely gets a look at, but to me looks great on my shelves; I could however have found things equally as aesthetically pleasing for less than £4000! I lived out of a suitcase once for some months and had literally sold off most of my possessions to keep living, now I'm comfortable and surrounded by nice things and have a wonderful wife - so, enjoy the good times and if you want to spend over two grand on something that gives you pleasure....just do it!

not sure what tax returns got to do with music gear. we have no choice but to do our taxes and don't have to justify it, I'm lucky to do mine for free. sorry to hear you had to fork out so much.

we don't have to buy music gear luckily.

when looking at music gear I have to justify it on terms of what it can do for me me versus the price as I have a very modest income. If i earned more then maybe i could justify an OP–XY but for 2300 euro I can't.

Teenage engineering uses the prestige price model/branding where the highest price possible is used as this gives the customer the feeling of exclusivity, luxury and superior quality. nothing is black and white but thats the model.
