Almost bought an iPad Air 2 yesterday but every tiny complaint/issue I hear about it makes me fearful of being in iPad 3 land again.

I went from the iPad 3 32GB to an Air 2 128GB and I couldn't be happier (Aside from the terrible guilt of having spent a lot of money on a luxury item). Everything is so smooth and the extra space is so liberating. Mind you I still haven't got out of the "What do I need I delete in order to add this new app" mindset... even though I still have ~ 100GB free!

    Enabler!

I have 64gb on my ipad 3 and haven't actually ever run into the space limit but I do somewhat conscientiously limit the local music library. I also have the cellular version which I've never ever used. Thinking 64 with no cellular could do me fine and cost me quite a bit less than my current ipad!

Indeed, tonight I went nuts deleting the snot out of apps on this thing (instead of actually making music) and it felt really good. I don't need all of this shit. I need focus and ideas—if it didn't provide that, I killed it. Think I lost a lot of partial projects in the slaying but whatever, they were just going to take up space on future hard drives for ever and ever anyway. I'm suddenly back to 25 gigs free. I deleted some great apps.

Did you keep your iPad 3? If so, what do you use it for and how do you integrate it?

  • SynthDrum Pads is down to $3.99 (usually $7.99). It's iPad only - i was going to pass on it because of its similarity to the pending "Elastic Drums", but at this price, I grabbed it, and it looks decent enough. Nice interface.

I did keep my iPad 3, with a vaguely formed plan to use it in the future with some sort of iConnectMidi/Audio type setup as a second sound source and/or control surface. So far though, I've found the Air 2 has enough power for my usage and I haven't felt the need to investigate any further for now.

The iPad 3 is jailbroken on 7.1.2 though and I do have other (legitimate) uses for it besides music, so holding on to it is worth it for me. Actually I still have my iPad 1, which has become a dedicated piano module (iGrand) for my wife.

  • Significant other device might be the plan. I could uninstall netflix and FaceTime. :)

  • Is MCR better than Altispace? If so why?

  • I was wondering the same thing. So, I got both. At three bucks a pop it wasn't a hard choice to make.

  • What's your considered opinion therefore @MrNezumi ? :-)

  • edited November 2014

Well, I haven't had enough time for a considered opinion, but I can give my first thoughts. First, I needed a convo reverb app. I use Auria as my primary DAW and as you know it has convo, but you can't use it "live". Both AS and MC looked great and got good reviews.

After playing around with both apps for about 30 minutes I would have to say that they are about the same. Both sound good, both have good (but different) UI, both come with nice sets of impulses (but AS comes with more) and both work well.

I usually hate it when people respond "buy both" when asked about which app to get, but I am going to do it this time. I did it. Three bucks each. I don't know how transferable the impulses are, but if you really like one interface over the other you could probably move impulses from one to the other.

  • One of the differences between the two apps is the length of the reverb you can have.

  • Storage space and Government budgets share a commonality, you can never have enough. With the recent Korg Module, if this becomes the norm, cos on the the Desktop this is not unusual, then even with the largest amount of RAM on the iPads this could bring problems. Let's hope Apple rethinks it's design with regard to storage options.

  • Moog filtatron on sale 0,89 euro.

  • Genome and GuitarCapo+ are back to their regular prices.

  • What is the difference exactly @Paulinko?

Much much more control over the wet/dry levels in MCR. AltiSpace is at max settings is quite tame. Yes, a little goes a long way and all that, but sometime you do wanna completely drench that sound in that particular IR, and you can do just that in MCR, not in AS.

IR stretch in MCR. You can stretch (kinda time stretch) the IR to make it shorter or longer. This makes for some really cool/interesting results on the sound/IRs when manipulating sounds.

Both got reverse IR. MCR also adds a mirroring of the IR into the mix here for even more manipulation.

User presets. You can save as many as you want in MCR in nice menu layout.

MCR processes true stereo IRs. Also much longer time limit on the IRs (up to 90 secs).

Handling of IR files in general is much easier in MCR (it's based on regular folder structures and naming of files). When I last imported a bunch of IRs into AltiSpace, it needed to convert them one by one into FLAC format. Needless to say, that was a pretty long and painful process.

These are some things I can of on top of my head

  • Appreciate. @ChrisG Thanks. Sounds like it's worth a look :-)

  • Some nice FREE CR-78 drum samples at http://samplesfrommars.com usually $10 but enter code $14-FREE! at the checkout, then update basket.

  • @syrupcore, bought AUFX:Dub. I mean what can you say for that price? :)

As good as plugins in my vst folder and infinitely more tactile. I have a beatstep coming so hopefully that'll make a good live controller.

I think you hit the nail on the head though with ios, there's an directness and immediacy normally only found on hardware and a lot more flexibility.

Looking forward to getting things setup and doing some recording. Hope y'all picked up some good deals i know i did.

I was stuck between Altispace and MCR also but MCR sounds a bit more flexible and user friendly so that's decided.

I noticed Korgs's sale runs till the 11th which is cool so maybe stuff will be added. I don't hear much mention of Gorillaz ielectribe, any good?

  • Gorillas iElectribe - there sample as opposed to synth based, and the samples are copyrighted, so to use them in your own material, well the words Legal and Minefield, come to mind, so I always skipped that one.

Ah yeah i read about that, makes it pretty much redundant. :|

  • Bought ielectribe, ikaoss... Had ims20 and gadget. Module is not for me currently... Maybe i will buy ipoly6, to have it by hand

Oh, nave on ipad mini 1st is... I should buy new ipad :-(

Mobile Convolution has a limit of 60s per IR and 4.2 s per IR for AltiSpace.

  • I believe they doubled that in an update@Paulinko said:

  • MidiSequencer thanksgiving sale extended to include monday.
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/midisequencer/id787934896?mt=8

  • Want to make some mS videos. The app is way deeper than it's simple UI would have you believe. At the sale price, you could use it for one good idea, never open it again and have made out pretty well. That is: if you dont own it, do!

Nave is a full blown Waldorf synth running on your iPad, sounds magnificent but i don't know how well it runs on older iPads.

Do Animoog's IAPs ever go on sale? Add up all those together and it gets pretty expensive.

  • I've got an Air. That's not a problem, I think. But my budget is. Thank you for the reassurance. :)

I think they did last year, but thus far they are still full price.

The MCR limit actually went up from 60 seconds to 90 seconds in one of the early updates.

I'd really encourage anybody not using true stereo impulse responses to try them out. Making them easy to use in the mobile app was one of the main design objectives and it hides any complexity by only listing L/R pairs once just like a quad IR file would be found. All the MCR presets are true stereo and I think this adds extra width, space and some life to similar non true stereo IRs. You can compare for yourself if you download the Samplicity M7 packs as they contain true stereo and standard stereo all in the same zip so it's easy to jump between them.

While it's a little off topic, hope it's OK to squeeze in a quick plug for the Reverberate Cyber Monday deal, 30% off the regular price of the biggest horse in the LiquidSonics stable for 24 hours only!
