Not too bad... even with the optional extra 200mb. Including the optional samples, that's roughly what ExoSphere is... and I was cool with that. I tend to shy away from any apps that are well over 200-300ish.
Waymaker coming out and simply linking up with Ridgewalk and Weeping Wall was really clever - I wonder if we’ll see an update that links with Outgrowth in an interesting way?
To be honest, I haven’t thought of a decent use case yet 😂 other than just using Waymaker as a MIDI sequencer of course. Always open to ideas, though!
Just watched Gavinski's excellent walkthrough and this app looks and sounds beautiful and full of potential.
Two wishlist items
1) In the basic sample playback engine, Stem... could you please consider adding loop start, loop end and crossfade? For such an ambient oriented app I was surprised by crossfade's omission. Loop crossfade is my number one request in any sampler engine, and would be awesome in Outgrowth.
2) Not sure if this already exists, but a second jitter modulator would be great for even more organic options.
Thank you so much for your unique and lovely apps!
Outgrowth is a fascinating instrument, so perfectly executed Aqeel !
@aqeelaadam I think I may have uncovered some odd behaviour where the presets cannot be selected, and the synth engine cannot be changed - this behaviour has persisted since mid day yesterday, only these elements seem unresponsive, the rest of the app appears to function.
Did some troubleshooting, Standalone vs AUv3, multiple hosts, an uninstall, reinstall, uninstall, hard restart, reinstall. After the second hard restart cycle it started working again in standalone, when the app was closed and re-opened the issues persisted. Grabbed a screen capture of the behaviour, can forward if needed.
Currently using iPadOS 26.2 on an M3 Air.
Some quick custom presets in Outgrowth, using samples from my own guitar and some vocal samples from Sopranotron:
This is exactly what I'm experiencing using an Apple Pencil Pro...Aqeel is aware of the problem and looking into it...
Is anyone else getting an occasional popping sound like the audio is restarting. I have only used it in Cubasis 3.8 so far and it could be that it only happens with the UI open. I have the animated background turned off.
The sound design is incredible, and the interface is really well thought out so this looks like exactly the sampler I've been dreaming of. Hats off to the team!
There's just one small thing I'm trying to figure out, though it's quite possible I haven't fully explored the functionality yet. Is it possible to add sample folders to a global pool rather than to specific presets? Since I've sampled all my synths at C2 and C3, it would be much more convenient to switch patches and quickly audition samples from a shared library.
Thanks for the reply @lasselu, does that means it works with your finger but not the Apple Pencil? If so, since OS26, toggling off
Settings > Apple Pencil > Hoverhas made my pencil work again.I will keep an eye out here regardless, had a lot of fun into it stopped working - potential for this to one of the best sound generators that I now own!
I think I'm pretty much covered for what I like to do with SoundBox unlocked and using my own samples, etc. but its only iPad and desktop. Not iPhone.
However, the fact Regrowth also works on iPhone... has me intrigued.
I'm just not that into actual musical composition. More weird, dark, or ethereal sounds for video art soundtracks, etc.
All of the videos focus on more of a music oriented use.
Are there any weird sound noise strange audio freaks like me out there who've been playing with Regrowth for this type of use? If so, what are your impressions?
Weird sound noise strange audio freak reporting for duty!
I was initially a bit...meh...but the more I delve into it, the more potential I can see. It's really good for creating sampled instruments (see @richardyot post above for potential, which has inspired me to start creating a whole bunch of samples to use in this one), so that's handy, but like you, I like to make new and unusual noises.
And I think this can tick that box too. For example I've grabbed a bunch of weird creaks and groans, plus a few droney noises, layered them, set Outgrowth to scan across, and come up with some weird and wonderful soundscape material.
I would say though that it takes a bit of work to build up decent patches, but - I find it more user friendly than for example, Audiolayer, for stacking and layering sounds. Effort required, but effort rewarded. Note though, I don't have SoundBox.
So I've gone from 'I've got this covered already'....to 'I think I need the desktop version'!
It would really help if it could record in though, that would definitely speed up workflow.
Hmmm... ok. More intrigued now.
I don't think Soundbox has all the granular type stuff... but for layering your own sounds that can be played... without an overabundance of settings and parameters... it's perfect for me. The interface can be a little clunky until you get used to it.
How has the learning curve been? I skimmed a few of the dev's videos, but they seemed kinda musically oriented. Soothing voice though, so I should likely give them more than a skim before I consider buying.
I'm guessing this has an easier learning curve than say the excellent (though challenging) Synthscaper?
Yep, it works when I use my finger...I have already turned of the Hover setting but that didn't help...
Loving this on my ipad @aqeelaadam ! Can you let me know how to uninstall it on my mac though please? I dl’d the free trial which has now expired.
Edit ; sorted now. Had to make “library” visible to find the vst.3 file. Cheers!
The nice thing about Synthscaper, is it has a really good randomiser - so I set all the oscillators to my custom sample folder, hit a button and I've got a weird new sound each time.
This doesn't, but the learning curve is relatively straightforward - I've managed to pick it up without watching any tutorials, though I'll have a look to see if there's anything I've missed.
I would say this is more of an instrument than some of my other sample based apps, such as my old favourite Spacecraft. So I'll be creating lots of presets to play either via a keyboard, or MIDI sequencer, as opposed to manually exploring samples via playheads and scrubbing.
Hey folks, thanks for a lot of excitement! As an FYI, I'm not really an active member of this forum - I try to pop in every now and then but I'm not a regular. If you need support I really recommend reaching out to [email protected] or via https://aqeelaadamsound.com/contact.
We're already thinking of a loop feature in Stem, so that's great to hear! Regarding jitter, that's an interesting idea. An alternative could be to have jitter be unique for each assignment (similar to Random Per Note). Maybe that could be toggled on/off.
Sorry for the trouble - that screen capture would be super helpful. Could you please email it to me via the address above?
I'll definitely look into this - each DAW is a little different in how they handle audio processing and maybe Cubasis is doing something a little unique. Could you please email me some extra info, such as your buffer size, sample rate, and maybe one or two samples/modes where you experience this issue?
This may or may not apply, but you can load a bunch of samples and then just flip through presets by selecting "Load". If you don't hit "Load with samples", then the samples won't be changed - just the settings. Maybe that could be useful?
Definitely a high priority item for us to include! It will just take some time and brainstorming to figure out a graceful way to do this.
Those are really good. 👍🏼
Fishing for interesting samples to use with this is half the fun. I mean you can make something different and cool out of even just a straight piano note sample, but when you find the right sample, it's like fishing through a box of vinyls you found stashed in the back of your closet.
I can't wait for sampling ability since I don't really keep that many samples. Paste from the clipboard, when it comes, will do me just fine though in the meantime.
@aqeelaadam Thanks for the reply! A unique per note jitter would be certainly cool, but if there was a jitter2 then you could set that one's speed differently, which could be handy and beautiful. I was hoping a second jitter might be easy to add as I think it would largely be recycling code.... but anyway even the one jitter is fantastic.
And fingers crossed for looping in stem (with crossfade please)... glad you are considering it! Best wishes for the holidays! Off to purchase this guy now
Low Poly Synth turns out to be a great source for exporting samples to use in Outgrowth. Just the right combination of harmonic and other content. Of course it's a little bit cumbersome having to fire up the Low Poly Synth web server and a browser for grabbing samples, but it's well worth it. Once Outgrowth has audio clipboard support it'll be easy as pie.
In lieu of my iPad not running Outgrowth right now, it does run great on my iPhone. Embracing the limitations, out came a fun little track an ambient project I’ve been cooking up for a while:

Sampled, imported, and arranged in about an hour this afternoon. Outgrowth doing the heavy lifting, with support from B00GA, Arguments, Waymaker/Ridgewalker/Weeping Wall, Skulptur, Scatterbrain, a handful of Moogerfoogers, ReelBus and Walls.
Yes, longtime fan of SynthScaper. I revisited it today and SynthScaper LE for AUv3 use. It took me nearly 3 hours to figure out how to get my samples into SynthScaper, then create a new group and scene, then save for import into SynthScaper LE for use as AUv3.
I used to know how to use SynthScaper, but completely forgot. Once I figured it out again, the results are AMAZING. However, Holy Shi’ite those interfaces are impossibly complex and not the slightest bit intuitive…
Anywho… Back to this dev’s new app thread… I think I’ll eventually pick Outgrowth up. It looks like it’s capable of weirdness too… and possibly easy to pick up the interface. Thanks for the honest first impressions and comparisons!
You’re welcome!
It’s definitely easier to use than Synthscaper. In fact that’s given me a project for today, to create a bunch of samples from Synthscaper, to feed into Outgrowth. I haven’t explored the app’s potential for scanning from one sample layer to another, so that’ll be interesting using Synthscaper‘s weirdness as a base!
Bit of a change in workflow for me, all this making proper sample libraries instead of recording in or bunging in, the nearest audio I have to hand. The dev is going to try to make adding samples easier, but anyway my new fancy sample libraries will come in useful for a lot of other iOS and desktop apps too.
Great stuff. Just a quick question - I thought the app did time stretching, but I can’t seem to find the option, am I missing something? I was hoping to use rhythmic samples, so keeping everything in sync is important.
It's a fair point! I think the only qualm there is a bit of UI bloat for something relatively niche.
A second option could be that we're considering adding a stepped random modulator - if that has a variable amount of slew, you could crank the slew and basically have two jitters.
There's no proper time stretching right now. We'd considered it during development but time stretching is incredibly complex and i'm sure multiple dissertations have been written on the topic. It's something we're keeping in our back pocket for a potential addition down the road but right now the closest approximation (if you can call it that) would probably be Reflect, where loop length is fixed across all notes. You'd be hearing different lengths of sample within those loops, of course, since it's being repitched, but that's kind of the Outgrowth-y way to make things consistent across pitches right now.
@aqeelaadam Having more LFO shape options would be good … e.g. a ramp up/down, square. Having the morph/easing option is great, and in combination with some more base shape options, this could be a more powerful tool.
You can essentially do ramp up/down with the 2nd ADSR which is why we kept the LFO simple
Sounds nice! Thanks for posting these samples.
I'm pretty content with both Salome and Samplewiz, but this looks really cool.
