iCA4+ still has multiple problems IMO......I suffered with it for months before putting it back on the shelf until they get it sorted. Still using iCM4+.
iCA4+ is fine in some situations (such as using in a studio), but stability of iConfig is still flaky and (if using two iPads) the USB Audio channels between two iPads cause crackles, pops no matter which setting is used. This makes iCA4+ risky for live shows.
As far as I can tell, the company has outsourced critical components on the software side (drivers etc) instead of rolling their own in-house. This is the likely reason for the lack of iOS iConfig for iCA4+, despite them saying it was a high priority 3 months ago. This makes it VERY frustrating when changing settings in iConfig (currently requires a PC), especially given the device requires a reboot any time basic things like buffer changes are adjusted. In today's universe, audio interface devices which require a reboot when changing buffers are way behind the curve.
Some things are just plain weird, like playing a MIDI file to manually update the firmware. That's bizarre!

Having used professional digital audio hardware and software since 1995, I'm used to better stability from sound cards. That said, I appreciate there are complexities associated with connecting multiple devices to a single interface and I applaud them for having that vision and pursuing it. However, iConnectivity have already had a lot of experience with this via the company's other products, but I'm guessing what worked with MIDI is harder to do with USB Audio.

I reckon they also missed a great opportunity by not including chaining with iCM4+ and/or iCM2+ in the scope for iCA4+, although in hindsight they've already got enough on their plate just getting iCA4+ stable. It's nevertheless frustrating that the USB Audio from iCM4+ cannot be connected to the USB Audio from iCA4+ unless using ASIO4all to aggregate, which requires a PC and is basically abandonware (ie no support)

I'm optimistic these issues will be sorted in time, which is why the device is still on my shelf and not on ebay.

glad I didn't bite, it's an ambitious project.... once it's all sorted out I'll take another look

Dont take my word for it - my group has very complex needs and we're operating on the limits of normal uses. Plenty of people are enjoying the iCA4+ and my objections are likely the exception rather than the norm. iConnectivity deserves applause for creating a visionary product and essentially pinning the future of their company on this product and the iCM4+ (which is a superb MIDI manager).

I've compared notes privately with some other users who have also struck similar problems - they also are pushing the boundaries of what's possible, so it's fair to say such niggles are not entirely unexpected. That said, "here be dragons" does apply for the unwary. I reckon it's OK to be optimistic in this case - although iConnectivity is a very small company, they are working hard to resolve the problems - a new iConfig was uploaded a couple of days ago. Once the problems are sorted the iCA4+ will really be a fantastic device.

The main problem potential buyers need to be aware of right now is the lack of iConfig for iOS. If you are intending to use two iPads or iPad plus iPhone, you cant edit the device settings unless you also have a PC/laptop. Additionally, USB Audio between two iDevices is still flaky for me. Maybe it works for others.

  • i hope the iconnectivity Team sorted out the probs soon (this year!)...the force will be with you....

iConfig for iOS + the save&secure&synced use of two iPads or iPhone over the USB Audio between these two iDevice is essential then i will buy it again...

  • I haven't run into any problems yet. I'm using a Mac and an iPad Air 2 and I can run MIDI and audio between them. The only thing I haven't tried yet is routing audio from my DAW on the Mac through an AudioBus effect and then back to my DAW again.

Installed the new iconfig and loading presets is no longer causing iconfig to crash, good news :)

Edit: also, I'm not sure if I just missed it before but now I can enable 18 channel audio output from the iPad to the desktop, before I could only seem to enable 14 channels, anyone else tried 18 channels before?

  • Where da app at

  • I'm using the ICA4 with 2 iPads live without crackling audio. For anyone still running into this, try this:

    http://www.iconnectivity.com/AudioBuzzIssue

If it works for you, let iConnectivity know, so they can fix this with a future update.

  • All my buzzing/crackling with iPad issues went away with the last firmware update. I am just using normal settings now.

  • this is good to read...did the new iconfig app work on ipad/iphone or is it just the PC/MAC Version....

There is no Config app for iOS yet. Hence my agitation.

  • Hi Folks,

It was suggested we pop over here and give you all a heads-up!

We are soliciting more feedback for our iConfig for iOS application and thus are opening up a beta for users of iConnectAUDIO4+.

To apply for beta, complete the form at: http://www.iConnectivity.com/iOSiConfigBetaApplication

  • ...better late than never....

  • It's progress -- I'll take it. Thanks for filling us in.

Yes, I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on one of these. A dedicated universal iOS app will be great!
One thing I want to suggest: How about making a smaller brother with less ports, maybe no DIN MIDI, and a smaller footprint? I think it would be great to have something like this but more portable.

  • I'm in the same boat. As soon as the iOS app is out and proven I'm getting one.

If anyone still continues to have crackling with your iOS device even after updating your iCA4+, I'd suggest testing your iConnect Lightning cable. iConnectivity support helped me pin it down to my cable, in which I noticed crackling whenever I moved the cable in particular positions on my desk when attached to my iPad.

Also, in a positive light; I'm running two iConnectAudio4+s together because I really needed more inputs for my modular eurorack system, and while I'm still having some setup issues within Live 9 and Cubasis, I'm happy to report that aggregating the two interfaces in OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.3 works fairly well. With my two tier iCA4+ setup, I can run an additional 4 inputs into my iPad with Cubasis. But since my iPad is only physically connected to one iCA4+, it can't work standalone with iConfig so it needs routing help from Live 9.

My current issue now, is trying to figure out how to route the additional tracks from Live into Cubasis without them summing into one mix. It's tricky because it has to be patched from iConfig's Audio Patchbay on device 1 in a particular way, then routed to Live with each track's Ext Out sent to another set of ins out a particular master channel, and then finally into Cubasis with another set of inputs.

Good ol' fashion fun. Try it.

    Picked one up yesterday.

Excited to use my RE20 again!

Haven't had much time to mess with it but I was able to have Ableton midi trigger animoog on the iPad...very exciting!

Can wait til work is over

  • Hey guys, I just read the whole forum as I'm looking into this device for many reasons. One question I couldn't find the answer to was: Does this unit have direct monitoring so I can hear the raw I out signal? I am a Loopy user and use all outboard effects and rely on zero latency, so this is high on my priority list.

    Thanks in advance.

  • months ago i tried the iCA4+. but i sent it back because there was crackling when i connected two ipads.
that might be solved now. i don´t know. i remember that via routing matrix in the iconfig software all inputs and outputs could be connected alongside the connctions to the software mixer routing capabilities.

Unfortunately, there's no direct monitoring. :( that would be very useful.

  • Finally got my 8 inputs simultaneously tracking on Cubasis! Very happy, now I need a patchbay to clean this mess up...

Thanks. You just saved me $300 and disappointment.

My understanding is that the interface latency is fixed at 1.7ms. I use with Loopy and it's not noticeable to me. If you can get your hands on one, I'd still give it a test. There's a lot this does that other interfaces don't.

That's not the only reason I can't use it. I use it with MiMix and mute certain inputs into Loopy, however with the Direct Monitoring, the audience doesn't know and can hear the vocals.

For example, I'll have my vocal input muted so that loopy doesn't pick it up, however I can still sing into the mic and the audience can hear it if that makes sense...

Maybe I can route my signals differently in Audiobus to achieve this method yet. What do you think?

For live performances, there actually should be a way around this if you patch through their audio patchbay - using iConfig. It bassically allows you to route your signals in every which way.

I did a search on their forum:
    http://www.iconnectivity.com/forum#/search

And this guy seems to be enjoying Loopy in his live setup. Anyone speak German?:
    http://www.iconnectivity.com/blog/app-month-loopy-featuring-nthirteen

What's your lIve rig setup? Do you run with a laptop along with a tablet?

  • Just an ipad. I have a 2i2o Soundcard right now. (Upgrading soon)

I run both inputs through MiMix into loopy. I turn off monitoring on loopy because of my current latency (Edirol UA-25EX). Then I run Loopy through some effects and into the main out (just like some filters).

Because I'm using DM, there is absolutely no latency at all and I hear what I normally would hear if I plugged straight into pa. It's a very basic setup, but it works because I have a bunch effect pedals for the guitar and vocals.

If I understand you correctly, I'm pretty sure you could simply set up your patch bay in iconfig to route your mic to 2 paths. 1 to a direct out, the other to Loopy. You should then be able to direct Loopy outs to the same output or a separate one. Would still give you MiMix access.

You'd have to set up iconfig on a PC of some sort (currently), but you can store the configuration to use on just the iPad.

  • Thanks Rad. That sounds good to me. I just have to see if the latency will be too much for me. It's tough to beatbox even with a little latency, so that will be the telling sign.

Hey, I'm working with iConnectivity and heard about this thread. Let me know if you have any other questions, but DylanPeters asked about direct monitoring, and I answered it here:

    http://www.iconnectivity.com/blog/direct-monitoring

That's for people who have the iConnectAUDIO4+, but in general 1.7ms is not a factor in this context.

As an aside, maybe ten years ago I was at a session where drummer Steve Ferrone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Ferrone) asked for the click to be advanced 3ms. He could tell the difference when tracking into Pro Tools. But the guy's a total freak - just amazing; this is a different context, and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that like me, you're a mere mortal. :)
