  • @Ryan,

We could do the snapping but I kind of like forcing all of you to practice. :)

More seriously, we compromise between doing what customers want and doing what I want. Usually we start by doing what I want and then end up doing what customers want when we realize that I am outnumbered.

  • Ryan hemeon made this very nice tutorial video for iFretless Guitar with BeatMaker 2:

@Ryan, sorry if you already posted this here. I didn't see it.

  • Heh Thanks @Blue_Mangoo I did post it in it's own thread but it got pushed down the list pretty quick ;-)

  • @Blue_Mangoo Cede no ground - keep your vision alive!

Haha actually I'd love for a snap option on iFG, not because I don't want to practice but actually I'd love to be able to do fretted slides. E.g. if I'm playing the intro to Pearl Jam - Alive, or Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven, or really any song that has a guitar slide, I want those slides to be fretted as that's what they are in the original. Fretless slides on guitar sound weird to my ears.

  • @Rhism

    :)

Fretted slides - that would be nice. We would have to take samples of the slides. App size > 1GB. We'll put it on the waiting list for the future.

  • Apps4iDevices posted this tutorial video:

And a detailed written tutorial on their website:

  • @Blue_Mangoo Cool! I googled iFretless guitar for fun.. Saw this right away... Videos I made are no where to be found though.. Did i make my youtube google proof? hehe

  • I guess my querie really started something here. It's not that I don't like the fretless sound. As a fretless instrument, your apps reign supreme. A snap to option would certainly work.

  • @Ryan your videos show up when I search for ifretless guitar on google.

  • Oh sweet. I bet it just knows they are mine and that's why it's not showing me. :-)

  • @Blue_Mangoo I sent you a message about this on Facebook, but I'm guessing it went astray. Really loving iFretless Guitar, but missing the tritone string tuning a lot. It's probably the one I use most on iFretless bass. Any chance of the string tuning options being extended and the tritone tuning being reinstated?

  • @PaulB Sorry, I didn't see the facebook message. We took it off to save some space on the screen but also because I don't find that tuning useful myself. We will put it back on.

Originally we put that tuning in iFretless bass because we thought it would be easier for keyboard players to learn - since the fingerings of scales repeat every two strings. But the chord fingerings are so much nicer in major thirds tuning and that tuning is almost as easy for scales so now the only tuning I ever use is the major thirds.

Do you use iFretless on iPhone? If not then I think we could just add that tuning to iPad only.

No, I tend to use iPad for playing instruments, as I like the extra screen space. It would be lovely if you could put it back in. I find the tritone tuning means a lot of my favourite runs are straight up and down. I tend to go a bit astray if I try fast runs that require sideways motion. Lol.

  • @PaulB I've added the tritone tuning to the list of features for the next update. It will probably take us two weeks to put together an update and another 5 days for apple to approve it.

" I find the tritone tuning means a lot of my favourite runs are straight up and down. I tend to go a bit astray if I try fast runs that require sideways motion. "

That's exactly why we put the tritone and major thirds tunings in there. The iPad screen is much taller and shorter than a guitar neck so you don't want to shift your hand position to the right every time you go up an octave like you would on a guitar because that would run you right off the edge of the screen.

While we're working on the update, you could experiment with the major thirds tuning. It's not as fast as the tritone tuning for scales but it's very good for arpeggios and chords. See this tutorial if you haven't already:

Yes, I do like the major 3rds tuning for simple one handed triads. It's the only one that puts the root, 3rd and 5th in easy reach on adjacent strings. It's not so essential if i'm doing spread chords with two hands, or chords based on stacked 4ths, but it's a useful tuning, to be sure.
Thanks for being so accommodating regarding this, it's greatly appreciated.

  • The new version of iFretless guitar is on the App Store. Audiobus users should update to fix the problem with the expired temporary key. The old key expires today.

  • Thanks for the update!

    And the StringSwell sound! :)

  • @Blue_Mangoo Great update! So glad you made the "buzzer". :-)

  • Thanks - and a nice new sound too, it blends well with the guitars.

  • Not sure this is a good idea but would not iFretless bass and guitar benefit of a Release time setting. I find myself getting more stacatto performances than I like. An adjustable note release time setting could maybe compensate for this, when desired, and the result could be more "fluid".
Very short release times, just so that the notes does not die directly when the finger leaves the screen. Talking about 0-100 milliseconds maybe?
I'm probably just bad at playing it :-)

Reduce the top end of the velocity control and raise the bottom end of the volume control. Try to play by placing your fingers rather than tapping, more like a real guitar, where you have to maintain contact to get sustain, not like a drum, which is the opposite.

  • @PaulB I asked for this a while back.. I don't mind holding the notes I'd hold on a real guitar but the open notes.. Or the first fret on the left notes.. they should have an option to let ring.. On bass I wanted this.. Now on guitar I REALLY want it. :-) @Blue_Mangoo

  • @Ryan, @Jtrake

Are you two talking about the same thing?

Jtrake, the update that went online today adds a string pad sound that we intended for people to use in the second patch slot to add more body to the guitar chords. That patch rings for a few seconds after you release the note. It sounds good for playing slow chords and that's why we did it with the pad. But it's not playable if you want to play lead or rhythm guitar. Perhaps we could add something like a sustain pedal on a piano. Would that work better with the "hold to sustain" style like the real piano or with a "press to release" style where all notes automatically ring forever until you stop them.

Ryan, we looked into the ringing on open strings only but frankly I find that ifretless is so different from playing a real guitar that I can't just transfer fingerings over from the guitar without rethinking them. If you really want to strum the guitar instead of playing each note, why not just use guitarism? We're glad @Rhism made that app so that we don't have to have those features.

  • @Blue_Mangoo Did you just tell me to use the app I worked on instead? LOL Hans! That's funny. Okay man, if you can't get it working or just don't find it usefull then it's all good. :-)

  • @Ryan It's a valid point, he could've said the same to me if I made that request :) If you have a scenario for open string ringing that can't be done in guitarism, it'd be useful for both me and him to know about!

  • edited April 2013

He doesn't have a point. It can't be done on Guitarism. Are you guys kidding me with this? Just never mind.

  • Ryan didn't actually mention strumming, to be fair. I think the basic problem is that iFretless instruments are more like a Chapman Stick or Warr Guitar than a traditional guitar. There is no way on those to play an open string by tapping and the first finger position is actually damped with a felt-like material, to prevent open strings ringing between taps on other frets. You can simulate pulloffs on to the 1st fret by keeping a finger there and letting it ring, but you dont get the brighter tone of an open string.

  • @Blue_Mangoo, I think that the ability to turn on/of the hammer-on pull-off simulation could improve the playability in some situations. So that it would always produce a right hand picked note sound instead of an pull-off sound when pressing a note to early.

  • @Ryan @PaulB So I guess I missed the actual 'request' part of Ryan's discussion with @Blue_Mangoo which is why I wanted to understand what he wants to do, 'cos even though it can't be done in guitarism (a lot of things can't) it could potentially be added, or perhaps something for lead guitarism.

In general any iOS instrument is going to struggle with the concept of open ringing sounds, since you need a separate way to mute them on demand. the traditional solution is to require the user to keep the touch held to let the sound ring out, and leave it to mute it. I think Ryan's asking for an interface where you can leave the string but still let it ring out, and that begs the question of how to eventually mute it without cluttering the UI. the guitarism thread had a similar request for a 'mute on demand' button rather than the current 'release to mute' design, and I deferred it to the future for similar reasons.

  • Yeah. It's because last time I told @Blue_Mangoo a more detailed request. I think he knows what I was asking for and is just being difficult. After all the videos and songs I've done using these two apps. It just amazes me that anyone would assume I don't know how they function. I'm cool with iFretless the way it is. :-)
