OK. Spent two hours with this tonight, even watched Doug's vid again to make sure I had most of the 'basics' down. Still not as comfortable as I am/was with DM1 and it's not as pretty big buttons in that way, but it may well be better and I have the feeling that it will will be better because the developer is actively working on it and it's pretty damn good already.

Yes, I find it annoying to import samples one by one through the ice and slow snow of dropbox, but they come in just fine and thereafter the amount of customization you can add per beat is a delight. Especially if you're using it plenty as a sequencer (realistically).

Yes, I wish you could chain/extend the individual beats into longer hits (maybe you can) as you can so simply in Auxy (for example), but I've got to give it up for the utility which is first class and I've also got to walk the talk as far as developer responsiveness which is becoming a key app virtue in my opinion (perhaps it always has been) and while I want to see the copy and paste etc, the ability to run this via AB into FLUX and then out the other side means that there is a tremendous amount already possible.

It's utilitarian in look/feel but the functionality is positive enough to make me know I'll use it sufficiently that the comfort will come. And, yeah, it's also super easy/straightforward to use and that's what look/feel is supposed to be about at the day's end.

Roll on further song mode sophistication and whatever else they've got up their sleeve. I'm a convert.

  • does it have copy past from audioshare into the sample slots?

Hi Kobamoto, that's in the next release.

Hey Johnny, can you explain this feature?

    HUZZAH!

  • @Diode108 said:

I'll do my best, but imagine the set-up of the 108's beat structure, which is not really a time line, might preclude exactly what I'm referring to, however, perhaps there is a workaround.

The easiest/best way to see this working (and forestall confusion from reading this poor brief) would be to take a look at the app Auxy (free).

Essentially, it has a time line I can add a note (beat) to which can then also be stretched across time as one wishes, see Figs 1 and 2 below (JG puts on his white coat and looks all sciencey):

    image

This allows for a longer sample to play as specified or, as in this case, for a synth tone to be extended across a number of beats.

  • Oh I see. Yes, sort of a piano roll. Right now we are purely "hit-based" since conceptually we are a drum machine; notes don't stop until they are interrupted or run out of sample. You can, of course, stop any sample short by dropping its volume to zero, but that can be a pain, the same way it's a pain to do choking with volume. Maybe a STOP Special FX would be easier, but it still means looking at something beside the pattern editor. We'll think about it.

  • @syrupcore said:
Depends on how I'm going to use them. Yes, sample accurate, please, for most any situation.

Those three options sort of became standard in pro apps because they map to how you'd wind up using it in a DAW context, or what you're calling ramping I think. Imagine I export my drum loop three times, once each with each one of the above options. In my DAW timeline, a 16 bar section would look something like: [1:no tail, clean start] [2:looped tail](*14) [3:included tail]. Actually, [3] is a little trickier: you lay it on the timeline, split it at loop point, delete the main loop and bump the tail up next to [2]

But kobomato is the one that requested the feature and I dunno how he'd use it. Me, I want MIDI sync so I don't need to deal with this sort of stuff any more. :)

This is an interesting point - well expressed by Mr @syrupcore. Something i've not fully fixed in my mind/workflow - but I need to know as I start to use Auria (soon).

So sorry to be OT but i'v got a question:

in Auria, can I not just take lots of 3s and have the next 3 start so that the tail of the previous 3 overlaps it? And do I need to use 2 lanes for this, or is there a way to overlap on one lane (which would be cleaner)?

This is surely better than having to deal with 1s and 2s as well?

There's a bug where Diode stays upside-down in landscape mode on the Pattern tab when the home button is on the right side (ios 7). This seems to correct itself when switching between tabs.

"Hit based" drum machines usually use a "Release" control for this purpose. The "Gate" knob on the Drum Machine tab seems like it should do this, but it doesn't seem to work with all of the samples. It seems most effective with snares (with little to no effect on kicks), which is weird. And turning the knob to zero still allows some sound through, which is not the expected behavior. Thanks.

  • @solador78, our "gate" used to be called "decay", but a musician asked us to change the name to "gate". I agree it's not the best name. We'll look into making the knob more sensible across more instruments in the future.

Yes! This is my wondering too? and how long the gate is staying opened? Can the gate time opening longer? And knob to zero sound through, Why?

The gate should stop all sound at zero to prove that it works, so I know I can open it at 1/127 if I want.

Yeah, I actually buy this argument (or at least it should only let out a clicky tick). As for this knob, I shook my fist at it and changed it over and over in development. This is one of the places that Diode-108 oozes a little bit more personality than I'd prefer.

I got this last night and played a bit. It's slick! Some comments/requests (sorry if they've already been said elsewhere). Thanks for your consideration!

    • Pattern: Would be nice to tap the name of the drum part on the left and have it play the sound
    • Pattern: Can I copy & paste notes between patterns? Just tell me if I'm missing the obvious...
    • Pads: Note repeat option would be cool!
    • Song: Having to tap to edit the name of "New Pattern 1, 2, 3" etc is a pain. That said, I don't want to need to come up with new names for patterns. I'd be happy if it just defaulted to "1, 2, 3, ..." and so on like in BeatHawk.
    • FX: I don't know if it's just me. Removing special FX feels confusing, as I can't tell if it's swipe-down or swipe left to shrink the length to 0 notes. Neither seems to work reliably for me.
    • FX: Also, I dislike having to use a pulldown menu to switch drum parts when inserting/arranging special FX. Some of my tracks only have one hit, so it feels like a lot of work to get there (let alone recall which sound is which track). I'd really, really prefer an Effectrix-style layout where I can see all the tracks at a glance, and drag the FX onto the grid with a translucent overlay. Since you can't double up any of the FX, this seems like it would work. I know there are a lot of design considerations such as making this continuous with the other FX mixers, so perhaps it's too much to ask. Not to be an armchair designer but... I guess I feel like a lot of screen space is taken up by the FX icons on the bottom, and not nearly enough of the drum tracks are represented, when all I'm doing is dragging each picture onto a lane. For example, couldn't these icons just be displayed down the right column where the mute/solo buttons are in Pattern mode?
  • @taroface

You can't copy/paste notes between patterns yet, sorry. To removed special FX, first shrink them down to one square and then drag down.

Your last point is a good one, and it's certainly something we've given thought to.

We aim to make the app better, and easier and quicker to use. We have tons of ideas along these lines, but it helps to get ideas from everyone using the app!

By far, the biggest requests we got upon release was for audioshare/audiocopy support and MIDI sync. Once we have those licked, there are a lot of workflow and fun things on the list.

Hi Kobamoto, that's in the next release.

almost time to purchase! and thank you for all of your hard work and great communication.

  • @Diode108 I will agree with those who've said how refreshing it is to see a developer working closely with their user base - Thank You for being here -

I'll also weigh in on the 'Gate' topic: I agree that at it's most minimum setting 'Gate' should leave but a tick of sound. My 'real world' application of this was trying to get an open hat short enough and it was still too long.
I don't know if an envelope Attack function might ever be implemented but this is something I'd use constantly within Diode-108.

Meanwhile: still Loving the app and (ultimate proof) keep reaching for it. x!

  • Diode seemed to work ok when I tried it a few times after getting it last week. Now it crashes within 3 seconds of being booted up.

I'm on 7.2. No other apps running at the same time. Anyone have an idea?

  • Bought it last night because of the positive reports from the forum and the developers :-)

  • Is it possible to turn quantise off?

Sorry about that. First, do you have the latest version? Sounds like a bug we fixed early on.
The only similar case we had was caused by a filename with a colon in an imported sample.
Please send an email to support so we can figure it out and get you running again.

No, sorry. Internally the engine is a step sequencer, but we are logging requests for future features.

Would you expect multiple hits to be able to recorded into a step? If so, how many? ;-)

  • Hi all!

I would like to know the names of all the iPad apps people would like to sync with Diode-108 so that we can make sure we have adequate test coverage with our beta testers. I'm assuming it's sequencers (like Nord Beat 2, which I've tested almost to the point of nausea during sync coding), DAWs, Loopy, etc.

Please even list the apps you would use that you are, you know, kinda embarrassed to admit to using (or email us at support).

The apps you list MUST be able to generate sync. This is a test of Diode-108 in slave mode.

    Names, people! I need names!

  • Single track overlapping threes should work in Auria. Sorry, can't recall exactly but I think Auria tracks are monophonic.

  • Thanks @syrupcore - yes when I tried it, it seemed like each lane in Auria was monophonic as you say. So I resorted to alternating wavs between 2 lanes, with the tails overlapping.

Just wondered if there was a better way to do this with loops.

  • Diode108 i used to own a Yamaha RX5 drum machine I think the resolution on that was 1/96, not realtime but enough to make subtle differences. For fine editing on diode you could zoom into a single beat. Quantise levels could be set per instrument as required.
Having a finer resolution would be ideal for recording patterns on the pads.
Been enjoying playing with it so far, got lots of potential! :-)

So in that case, you'd only need a single hit in a step, you just want to push it around in time. We have 1/3 1/2 and 2/3 delays now, so it wouldn't be hard internally. Storage in the pattern and UI would be the chief development costs.

  • @Nu2moro good insight/thoughts. It's a fun one so far....
