  • It's a great tool, you won't regret the purchase if you put the time in.
@technemedia I think it's easy to lose "track" of what track is making each sound as the visualisations don't often make sense to the sounds triggered. It would be useful to have the outbound midi channel displayed on the track itself somewhere, or on the coloured circle icon to make it easier to see which track is going out if playing by midi. This would help to prevent from getting lost :)

  • It's a cult I tell you (but in a good way :)

  • Didn't realise you've already made one @funjunkie27

@monzo I think the 2 weeks right to return is your customer right so I wouldn't worry about ending up in a black book etc.

I'm going to stick with it, I'm starting to get the hang of it now, and it has some unique features - such as the 'jam' feature.

I was going to say I absolutely love this app - just got a great Indian rhythm going, clicked the scale button from Major to Minor and then the track froze. Opened it again and the whole sequence was gone. This happened earlier, so not sure if this is a bug or not. Now I can't get a sequence going again using this song as the notes don't change - just crackle - so having to restart from scratch.

It seems there's a bug when you select the 'global' option for changing the scale as it works ok on an individual instrument.

I can see the potential, but this app really needs some polish.

Update - created another really good track, saved it as a sequence but it wouldn't play when I tried to reload it. Tried removing an earlier saved song and the app crashed.

I'm getting fed up now. I can put up with the absolutely terrible UI, I can even cope with the wacky way it works, but I really can't accept flaky reliability. What is really frustrating is that it has the potential to be a really useful tool. Bear in mind that I'm running this app in standalone without any of my own samples, and no external MIDI so it should be rock solid.

Sorry but I don't think this is worth the price, even on sale. This is a work in progress. I'll give it a few more goes but blacklist or not, I think this one is going back to Apple. A shame because I could really enjoy using this.

I've run into this type of thing a few times as well and one thing I try to remember do is when I get something I like, I save a snapshot even if it's not quite where I want it to be. It almost seems like it runs out of memory or something and when you save a snapshot it will be there when you come back after a crash. I've also run into where I had a really cool groove going and tweaked a few parameters and lost my cool groove and can't get it back again. I usually end up saving a bunch of snapshots which are variations and then delete the ones I don't want later.

One issue I'm seeing is I still can not delete single waves when I've saved them, they won't go away when I delete.

  • monzo, what device and IOS version are you on? I'd ask you to keep it and let me keep at fixing bugs that are discovered. I can only fix what I can replicate and once I can replicate a bug it's usually very easy to fix. The things you described I've done before with no problems so maybe you could email me your preset. My goal is reliability and performance above all and UI enhancements second.

  • I had a few issues with the app freezing before, but I rarely lost any data, and since the last update, where Peter focused on stability improvements, it has been very solid for me. I stress it quite a bit with multiple apps receiving midi from DD, AB or Audioshare recording it all, and even some effects in the chain. I'm running an iPad 4 and mini retina, both on 8.3.

Thanks for the reply. I'm using 8.3 on an Air 2. I can't send presets as they didn't save.

There seem to he two definite bugs - changing global scale kills the song completely, and it quits when deleting a saved song.

There's other stuff too, where I seem to lose the ability to create notes and it just plays a single note/pitch, this has happened a few times but I need more time with it to link it to a particular action.

The UI and workflow is awful - I would make this a priority along with the bugs.

On the plus side I created (and lost) some of the best rhythms I've created on the iPad - better than anything I've done with other drum apps, and I really like the ethnic samples.

Any idea about my reported bug?

    First of a few..

Not sure I would have come out and just said it like that but I have had Different Drummer for about a year and, while it is an amazing app, I tire quickly of using it due to the user interface and so tend to put it to one side. When I do go back to it I'm always really inspired by the output but it really needs someone with an eye for user experience to help you. The two lists, chord progressions and file saving/loading are particularly confusing.

But, not to totally concentrate on the negative, it remains an unbelievably fantastic ideas generator and I have to commend your persistence and creativity in keeping going with it @technemedia.

I did think twice about being that blunt, but considering it's priced as a pro app I thought it was a fair comment. It's detrimental to the apps use, not just aesthetics. I get the feeling it isn't going to be changed any time soon.

I don't like being negative either, and as I said it's capable of really good things, and now I know what caused previous crashes I've managed to save a pattern.

It obviously works, as the guys on the forum have created great things with it. But it could be a lot more user-friendly than it is at the moment. I'm sure it'd help sales too.

@KING... yes I have confirmed your bug. When I added SF2 support I forgot to update that function to handle it so will fix in next update for sure. Sorry about that.

And @monzo changing global scale on ABA or just playing a regular Wave Set? I've tried both and can't get the app to crash on that. Can you clarify what you mean by "song"? There are Chord Progressions, ABA Sequences, Wave Sets (presets) and Single Waves so not sure which of these you are referring to.

And I totally agree the UI needs work. It is more down and dirty than refined and it's hard for me to find the time to redo graphics or UI layouts but specific suggestions are always welcome. If you have ideas I'm all ears. I appreciate your honesty and I rely on users to let me know where improvements are needed. I save presets all the time and they come back as saved so not sure what causes an issue with this. I think Funjunkie has also had good luck with saving presets too.

Also, if you've only had it for a day it might take some more time to learn why things are the way they are after several years of heavy development but it definitely shouldn't crash! Cheers, Peter.

  • Opportunity knocks. People who learn this app love it DESPITE the long learning curve, unfriendly UI etc. What a chance therein to take the best of it and offer it to folks in a way that makes them want to keep on using it.....

It happened twice when changing the scale via the sample editor section. Just tried again and it didn't crash this time, however when I tried changing a piano sequence from grid to wave mode, everything slowed down and started crackling again.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, I can't understand why it should break up like this though. I did get it working again this time though by switching back to grid mode.

I think a good place to start would be to look at other music apps and see how they organise menu elements and workflow. At the moment your controls are scattered all over the place, and you use non-standard icons (waving robots?) which adds to the confusion.

When I called the UI awful it wasn't a criticism of the style or graphics, though they obviously need a polish, but the basic layout of the controls and dialogs. I think if they were better organised it'd help you to develop the functionality, and improve usability for your customers.

  • Yes...I've rarely had a problem with saving presets. In fact, I can't remember any specific issues. I do tend to save often, so that might explain it in part.

I would agree that the UI could be improved on, but it's one of those things I hardly notice, given the miles I've put on her. For newcomers, I could understand the frustration though.

I'm sure some of you have heard what I've done with midi in DD. if not, check out my Soundcloud account. The vast majority is me using DD with midi....certainly the last years worth of submissions. Not that it's that much to speak of, but it should give you an idea of the breadth of the app.

    https://soundcloud.com/funjunkie27

I've struggled trying to learn conventional instruments, so I find myself coming back to DD often. I still can't get fully crafted songs out of it...partly due to ADD, noodling is just too fun, and partly due to difficulties I've had in meshing sequences in ABA, but I'm starting to wrap my head around it lately.

What DD excels at is getting the most unlikely rhythms and structures along with stability in midi implementation. I've used it with most midi apps I have and have a high rate of success in getting it to work. Lately, I've been using it with Gadget, and that has proven very interesting, but it could be better if I could drive multiple Gadgets at the same time. Also, the dev has been great in taking feedback and implementing suggestions. Just check out the update history!

@monzo one thing to remember is the Wave Mode and Grid mode each have their own Beat Value. In Grid Mode it's referred to as Grid Resolution so when you switch it could be totally different depending on rests, beat value, quantize etc. Grid Mode is really a different animal and it can be confusing switching back and forth....but there are at least reasons for why it is that way. The waving robot is the Automator. Apple uses a robot for its Applescript Automator so it's not too far a stretch. The face on the robot is based on J.S. Bach for some trivia.

p.s. I really appreciate your feedback.

    That's cool.

Re UI etc.. Yes for me I've had it for 24hrs-ish and still struggling. I usually like to find my way through an app before reading the manual, it's part of the fun. (Usually).

I like to be inspired within an hour, I'm seeing glimpses. All I want to do at this point is program a simple drum pattern (myself) and tweak, still trying...
I will read the manual soon but only because I have to.

Hopefully it will just click very soon and I'll get that 'WOW!' feeling..

  • Totally agree the UI needs work, although I give credit for having a portrait view as well as landscape :) I can appreciate that most developers don't always have resources to pay a GUI designer but I would say it's investment well made as I'm sure the right UI would make the app sell much more, good design isn't easy especially with an app this deep. It's definitely a reason why I don't use the app more, but I love the functionality. Look forward to further updates, it's a unique tool in the arsenal.
I have to say though I've been using it a lot today and haven't had many problems at all stability wise other than the odd crash when in audiobus with about 6 other apps.

  • @KING777 sounds like a great approach to me. I can say it's probably best to master the Rest and Tie Waves in terms of getting a good beat but Grid Mode is fairly straight forward too. Just drag notes around or double tap them to erase or go to Rest Wave and draw rests. Use the + and - to move through measures in the pattern.

  • @KING777 - I just uploaded a preset called "Basic" in the DD community. Hopefully that fits what you're looking for and gives you some ideas on how I constructed it.

  • Also note that the community shares are yours to do with as you please (correct me if I'm wrong here Peter.)

  • Also thought it might be useful for newcomers to be aware of the forum..

    http://technemedia.com/forum/index.php

  • This app is nothing short of AMAZING!!!!!
Maybe addictive drummer would fit its name better cause this app is addicting.
    So does it support soundfonts?

  • MM4C - I believe the Jam panel uses Soundfonts. I don't think you can import them in though, but I often used bs-16i as a midi destination, so in that sense, yes it does.

Nice! Yes I have downloaded a few from last night, (some of yours also). I was/am trying to do it with as little help as pos. but I'm gonna get into it now for the next few hours and see what's what. :-)

Edit: plus I will take a listen/look at your latest upload, (in a bit) cheers!

  • how many snapshots are available per song in this app?

  • I'm not sure there's a limit aside from drive space @kobamoto...I've done many without a problem.

  • edited May 2015

Funjunkie27, I download one of your songs but how do we start a fresh new one with out deleting yours?
I know, I'll read the manual....but a quick tip would suffice. Thanks!

  • Just press the starburst icon at the far left of the screen. It's on the same line as the round track icons....roughly mid-screen. You should save whatever you have opened first though, unless you don't want to keep it.
