You should follow the standard MIDI cc assignments. In the days of hardware, MIDI pretty much worked properly on all devices because they followed the MIDI protocol. There are enough unspecified CC's that can be used for special cases. See these pages:

    http://www.indiana.edu/~emusic/cntrlnumb.html

    http://www.blitter.com/~russtopia/MIDI/~jglatt/tech/midispec/ctllist.htm

Thanks for those links @anickt. I've read so many of these cc charts yet I always pick up something new each time regarding the implementation.

  • Apart from a complete fog how MIDI works with this horse, I'm enjoying it. Haven't had any crashes recently, and it's a versatile beast so thumbs up for now.

  • Ben is it possible to make an option for the coarse tuning and fine tuning layer automation to snap to a series of scales and keys?

I've heard that request a couple of times. I'll think about how to make that happen. might be a thing for the pen/edit screen "snap to scale" to something.

That's the feature request i'd like the most to happen, making patterning a crazy good self contained groove box, with generative music abilities

ps: don't forget the 'harmonic minor' scale... :)

  • Yeah I love generative stuff...to get new creative juices flowing. Sort of the stuff that Oscilab does.

Cool - track public again, now Johnny has given his blessing :).

this sounds interesting too...does Patterning have access to the input for sampling? or is it load samples only?

  • I know that this has been covered. But can't find it. Is it possible to import zip files?

hi Ben, not sure if it's been asked for (probably has) but can you add midi export to the feature request list with "open in" if possible?

    Thanks!

I'll add to the feature request list :)

Quoting just to prove I didn't come in all Willy Nilly.

I need to import 800 samples into Patterning. Does iTunes file sharing >> sync work? And if so, does the app code work with folders if I drag and drop them? Almost positive zip doesn't work.

Please help, en route to a session now.

Hey -- If you put the samples into iTunes File Sharing (not in a subfolder!) they will be imported ... might take a second to launch/ process that many files. Hoping to improve the file system in an update.

    I guess not...

Loading samples from files only. Though an app like AudioShare makes it pretty easy to do and immediately load into Patterning.

  • Is anyone else having problems with seekbeats. I'm piping midi from patterning into seekbeats and getting lots of buggy behaviour.

  • Yep. That's Seekbeats.

    Buggy midi in unfortunately.

  • I've just been setting up Patterning to run the Volca Beats (channel 10 for all; kick = C2, snare = D2, CHH = F#2, OHH = A#2, clap = D#2, claves = D#5, lo tom = G2, hi tom= D3). What is the preferred method for silencing the internal samples? If you mute the individual drums in the mixer, it also stops the MIDI note from transmitting.

to set master volume to zero?

    @dokwok2 said:

yea, turn the channels down or the master volume if you are using all MIDI tracks.

This is true. And a very good thing IMO. Makes jamming with midi very nice.

As said, to silence the internal sounds just set the master volume to zero.

  • Only just discovered the probability & auto-rotate features, seems this app gets better every time I get stuck in :)

  • So no way to delete user samples? I imported some from AudioShare just as a test, and would like to get rid of them.

  • Also currently trying to figure that out 1P18

Thank you. Had to work with a non-circular program last night and hated it. I would pay a ton to have this as a desktop plugin just to buy for the people I work with. I know the experience wouldn't feel quite as smooth with a mouse, but all the features and workflow would be intact. Just sayin'.

And if you want to mix internal sounds with MIDI?

  • Set the volume of the midi ones to zero, but not the internal ones.

That prevents the MIDI voices from triggering.

Apart from a little tweak to the app (and I realize that "little tweaks" can be expensive, in terms of time and testing), the best solution I can think of at the moment is a set of null audio files that can be assigned to MIDI voices. This could be saved as a kit and distributed in the next round of free downloads. (Or we could all just roll our own.)

In the meantime, you can load samples from a melodic instrument of notes in a particular key.

    It's a beautiful thing!
