parallax, you can hook it up to a velocity sensitive drum pad controller and record that way?
what would it take to make this app universal, seems like he would have made allot more money so must be a good reason not to do so?
actually no MIDI input, except clock!
thanks Ben, almost fell outta my chair
Would be really great!
Auria is very well equipped in this regard:Midi time code,Midi clock,Midi start/stop send and song position pointer.
The only thing i'm missing is probably a midi delay.Quite handy in Cubasis.

Oops, got output configurations confused with input. Other than triggering patterns and clock, MIDI-in probably misses the point of this app anyway, since it's not designed to be workhorse drum and phrase sampler/editor/machine ... MIDI-in on notes would bypass its whole raison d'être as a sequencer.
The option to change channels and notes per voice on output is nice.
Hmmm, i tried getting it to sync with daw samplitude on my pc. Should it start playing when i hit play in samplitude?
MIDI in would enable direct playing of sounds versus programming a sequence. To me that's not bypassing the whole point of the sequencer but adding more spontaneity and another dimension of creativity to it. Being able to play a beat into the sequencer live on a controller would be extremely valuable to me.
With all of the various MIDI out options, can you use Patterning as a midi sequencer or driver?
Yes it sends midi clock out
Jason Donnely aka DJ Puzzle just posted these free rock drum .wavs on his site. They're pretty good to my ears. Copy the link and open it in the Audioshare web browser, and easy access to import into Patterning.

really, I don't get that impression. for those who like to bang in beats with a controller adding ones own dynamics I would think this app would be ideal because imo its what you do with the sequencer after you input the beat that is it's main draw.
First impressions: it performs very well on my old iPad 2

No doubt, MIDI-in would be a plus. I overstated the case. I was more suggesting that if live input is your aim, there are better options out there (even if this had MIDI-in). Its specialty is drawing in (poly)rhythms (super fast) as well as some automation.
A more traditional DAW-style MIDI clip design would be easier to record off grid and go in after the fact and micro-nudge around notes you played in live, given the concentric layout and lock-step design of Patterning. If sample start and per-step offsets were added to Patterning's automation options, that would all change.
Still, there is swing and step duration per voice, so things can get really dynamic in a hurry, even if that Dilla magic is more elusive.
You'd probably look elsewhere if you mainly wanted a drum sound module and editor. Using an external sequencer on Patterning WOULD probably be missing the point ... not that great things don't come from subversive uses.
btw the first thing I asked Ben on release day was if he could add free form/and snap to grid nudging and he said it was a good idea so I think we can look forward to that.
I added a few loops from Patterning to spice up a track last night - worked really well - I was able to quickly create an interesting beat and record it into Auria without any issues. Not exactly a detailed review I know, but just thought I'd chip my 5p into the ring - as an app I'll actually use in my tracks, I can see this one getting more use than say, Elastic Drums.
Yeah I agree. Though that new jam mode in elastic is pretty awesome the two compliment each other really well.
+1
Jam mode is brilliant. It'd be great if you could use samples with Elastic Drums, as well as the synths. Being able to import drum kits and use it for a wider range of music would be awesome, as the kids say.
Patterning is the first app I've bought in a VERY long time. The MIDI out and interface are what sold me, as well as the reputation of the developer.
So far I'm satisfied with my purchase, but there are two things that are holding me back from giving it an unqualified, glowing review. First, it's not working at all for me as IAA in Auria. I'm not sure if this is an Auria or Patterning issue. Second, the lack of previewing samples in the browser, and in the editor, blows my mind. It's such an incredibly elegant and well thought out app that I was shocked there was no way to preview samples before loading them into a slot, or when adjusting the start and end points.
I've skimmed this thread and it seems like people have brought up the latter issue, which I tweeted Olympia about. It also seems like some others aren't having great luck with Auria either, so I'm glad (I guess?) that it's not just me. Given the developers track record, I assume these will be sorted out in the future, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Yeah, big things and small things, but sometimes the small tings loom bigger after a little use; lack of sound preview is irritating me.
+1 for sample preview in browser
How are you guys using it with cubasis with rock solid sync? I just tried it via iaa and I'm getting a ton of latency and drift.
I am not too put out by it but also having a quick access solo button on that screen would be handy too. For now i just set up a really simple pattern that i jump to when loading samples that doesn't have any frills and just lays out the individual sounds.
Ooh random sample loading on all slots would be nice too.
+1 for the above
It's not working in IAA in MultitrackStudio either, also the clock receive mode is erratic. When it works, it works well, but often when starting the clock from MTS it's slowing down tempo and off, takes a few goes to lock onto the MTS clock sync.
I've always found MTS's clock to be terrible as a master to sync to.
