Nice work @AndyX. I Like the syncopated piano, however for the groove I think it could be a little looser. It seems kind of quantized. As others have said, the tempo change is great. All of a sudden I was bobbing my head so quickly, and I was thinking when did that happen? Good job.
This video probably answers both the above - this is where I'd like to be:
They're pretty variable - the old stuff I find hardest to listen to, easiest is his Stereolab collaborations - my faves are his work with Faust.
Did this a few weeks back, bleedin racket, too late, no structure or meaning, what's it all about Alfie etc.
The sound of poltergeists trying to free themselves from a demonically possessed motherboard, but dying in the attempt.
That's exactly the effect I was going for - success!
Well yes, I hate to say it but it was too obvious. You should do something more oblique next time
I'm getting a bit middle of the road in my middle of the age. Ironically the stuff I'm working on at the moment is even more easy listening, featuring guitar and 'gasp' chord structures...
Everyone sells out eventually....
Looking forward to hearing these chord progressions. I'm toying with a partial return to guitar in September.
Like that Nurse video a lot.
Perfect replica of the inside of my head in 1995. Lunchtime. 34th Street in Manhattan. Just got out of the divorce lawyer's office.
The Monzo clan's current aims/plans/dreams are to find a similar isolated cottage with enough outdoor space to be able to do something similar to that feller - ramshackle studios for music and painting made from old crates and dreams, kids necking boze straight from the bottle, old bits and bobs lurking about - and all held together via the slimmest of incomes. Not currently possible in the UK but if we get fed up we might be able to do it in France or Ireland. Maybe.
Yeah I've been in there too, I'm still hearing the residual echo...
Got to be done. I've recently bought an iRig Pro and overjoyed at what Tonestack does to my strat - haven't daren't put it through Turnado yet...
Frobulator as an IAA effect in Tonestack is fun too - and free!
Oooh I'd forgotten you could do that in Tonestack - thanks for the reminder!
You hit it right on. Communicating my noise as of now. Will work on more complete tracks. Good to be on the board though.
Shurely some mistake (?)...as my entry had neither.
OK, here goes feedback on the remaining ones:
@Jarmin - Beat 'Em (WIP):
Like it a lot. Nce bit of drum and bass. Some great dubby sounds and a really nice bounce to it. Love the brass at the end. It's well constructed too.
@Marcel
@LostBoy85
This is an emotional track. It really does it's job of telling the story. Musically it's a bit 'soft rock' in parts (the chorus mainly) - which isn't my bag really - but then other parts I really like musically. I like some of the atoms sounds in the verse. The arp you have going in the chorus is cool too.
Your voice is great and the mix of all elements sounds very pro to me. I commend you for getting this song out there. It's a pretty universal theme and I think you cover it really well lyrically.
@badmaxton
It's a little bit 'all over the place' this one . Some nice ideas - but feels like a kind of sketch or jam of a few ideas. Not finished. The bassline that seems to run throughout gets a bit repetitive to my ear.
@AlterEgoUK
I did try to like this - but it's just not really my thing. Technically it all sounded very good. But it just sounded a bit too much like mood music for me. I guess it's mildy jazzy (although not 'jazz') - but it doesn't seem to have much of a clear hook and it kind of meanders around using not very 'different' or 'interesting ' (to me) sounds. That's said i've no doubt that it's technically very good playing - i'm just a Philistine in this area! I'll shut up now . [All meant constructively, but honestly...]
More to come...
@dblonde - The Porcupine:
Mmm - not really my cup of tea either particularly. And I don't think i'm that qualified to technically judge the 'real instrument' playing. The drums sounded pretty 'real'. It sounds kind of 80s, kind of soft rocky... Very dramatic I guess - but left me a bit cold. I like the end though - with the kind of minimal pluck type thing. [Again , all meant constructively, but honestly...]. Oh and I like the cover art - really cool .
@touchconspiracy
A kind of classic techno sound... Nice bit of backwards sounding something at about 0.18. Nice full sound.
Like the change up 1.30 - I must admit I was wanting something to happen (but then i'm not listening on a sweaty dancefloor off my box ...
I prefer your D&B stuff personally - but that's just my taste in music I think. This sounds like a credible techno piece to my untrained ears - although nothing hugely memorable about it.
@BvsMV - Some Day When I Wake Up
Yep - this is good... Nice drums in the mix. Nice slow build. I really like the muted arcade sounds - bit different (although maybe a few too many of them?). The backwards stuff, mixed with the bell-like lead and the drums is what makes the track. The field recording stuff at the end with the piano is very nice too. It's a bit structureless etc.. etc.... - but who cares - it's a lovely walk the park in my mind .
More coming...
@AndyX - Electric Train
So Andy decided to get the train rather than walk... Sounds bit like quite a slow plodding train to start with - but hey, is it speeding up? Like a train does. It is. This is pretty cool. Once the piano comes in i'm grooving along pretty happily. After that it maybe doesn't really go anywhere that exciting... But its a nice concept. Just needs an ending maybe? Sound-wise - all seemed pretty tight to me.
@rkmoneky - Texas Gadget BLuEz:
Nice sub bass thing at the start. From there it's kind of a cool, slow guitar workout rather than a full on track. I'm no expert but seems well played and has a nice mood to it.
@Thus - Wasteland
Again, not really my music taste particularly - but it's a nice assured track. Interesting drum track that seems to fade in and out a bit. I like the variety in it, but it's a bit disconcerting/distracting when it fades out every couple of bars (if that makes any sense?). The vocal track sounds pretty good - very pro sounding - well mixed, sounds perfectly in tune etc... Maybe would benefit from a more catchy chorus? But all pretty solid stuff in my not very well qualified subjective opinion .
@Monzo - Austerity Head
Nice title. I'm not even going to bother critiquing in a structured fashion. I'm just going to list the particular sounds/parts I liked:
Great job.
I'm sure various brands are banging down you down to use it on their ad .
Ha, ha - maybe @Monzo is thinking of his own track?
@asnor, ha ha! Song of the day club anybody??:D
@rkmonkey congrats on getting a track in mate.It sounded good as well...a bit of an emergency stop of an ending though.Thankfully were all ok and will hopefully get to hear more of your stuff!:D
@Thus congrats to you as well mate for getting this track in.I like the song.I love the beat and the wurly piano.the vocalist sounds a bit like a poor mans Phil Collins (meant to be a compliment:)
You've done a great job of keeping the instrumentation to a minimum (something I could learn from:) There's no crazy esses on the vocal if it were me I may raise the vocal a smidge.Also if It were me I would use the last two 'time to break the ices' and use them to replace the previous ones as the singer had warmed up by then (as they are difficult notes to sing) the first three were a bit off if I'm honest.Its just cos it's such a sudden change up that it needs to be spot on imo.Great job to both of u though mate.
Is this something that you are learning from scratch or do you have a bit of a background in making music.I suspect the latter:) keep them coming mate.
@Monzo Man just the bloody picture on your track freaked me out....then I pressed play!!:D
I gave it my best shot man.Whats it that Sheryl Crow used to sing?..."if it makes you happy,it can't be that bad"!! fave bit was the special guest of a fruit machine! Also liked the noise/reverse thingy at the end.Not my bag of twiglets but then again who the hell eats twiglets anymore...yeah...right...off to bed me thinks!:D
OK, have treated myself to some decent headphones at last. Suspected that I wasn't getting the best picture of mine, and other people's music, listening with the earbuds.
@Jarmin - Beat 'Em (WIP):
Found this a little confusing on first listen. It starts out as a bouncy kind of pop/reggae tune, then kicks in with the double speed percussion. For a while it seems that the two things don't fit together as they seem like two tracks that would work standalone. After a second listen though, I found that it does settle into quite an enjoyable tune with a good hook. Liked the little banjo(?) and submarine pings thrown in there too. The only negative thing that struck me was that the bass sounded a bit muffled in the beginning.
@Marcel - instrumental:
I could definitely imagine Robert Smith singing over this. It's a convincing, nicely balanced mix as usual that flows, as your tunes do. But it seems to me that the decision was never made about which line would become the main motif(s). Which is fine as it stands but it just feels like the potential in some of those gentle guitar riffs hasn't been fully realised/exercised. Enjoyable enough as it is though.
@LostBoy85 - Phantom Love:
I have to admit Jovi Bon Bon style singing is my "brussel sprout on an ironing board", which is a bit of a shame after your previous submission. In Moraira Sky I thought that, in parts, you were developing a sweet soul singing style, which is much more palatable for me. Obviously if soft rock is your thing then it's best to ignore me as it's probably the one style of music that I just find it painful to listen to.
Actually I would rather talk about the Moraira Sky track as I thought you did a really good job of that and there was some pretty sophisticated singing/songwriting going on.
@badmaxton - Breakin' The Past:
Starts with a great groove and a nice enough distorted bass but then it seems to lose that feel in the second section and feels like it plods a bit there. The break with bass slide works nicely in the later middle but after a while the whole track feels like it a little flat. I think it could just do with ramping everything up a little, giving it a bit more urgency, making it a bit scarier maybe? But I did like the drum pattern and style of the bass, just needs 'something'
@AlterEgoUK - Middle Rise:
Listened to your earlier track and was wincing a bit when everyone was calling for you to add a guitar solo. Seemed to me that you were trying something outside your normal zone and the response was "back in your cage!". But, as you have shown, you have enough restraint and taste as a musician that you didn't just wail over the top and drown all the existing music out. I think it did lose a little of the impact that the keyboard stabs had in the first version but good job over all.
@Igneous1 - Gilded Hero:
I heard the Japan influence on the first listen to this track but it completely took on it's own character when I listened again. It's a nice track, very subtle and the interplay between the bass and percussion creates a really effective rolling rhythm that works especially well in the stereo field. I think I enjoyed this the most of all your tracks that I have heard so far.
@richardyot - Lights:
Funnily enough, your track starts off with a very similar feel to Igneous1's. It could almost be the same track initially.
I hate what you do to your voice. By that I mean all the processing just really kills any expressivity. I would rather hear your voice truer, with the imperfections and all. Saying that, the chorus is really catchy and powerful and the build in the latter part of the track works really, really well. You are making a lot of progress as a songwriter but I do wish you would go a bit easier with the vocal processing and let a bit more of the live quality through.
That's enough for one night, will review the rest over the next few nights.
@jocphone thanks mate.I guess I'm having fun just trying on different hats these last few months.cheers for listening though:)
Yeah of course. That's how it should be. But we all have our unexplainable biases, mine just happens to be against slow rock ballads. I'm sure many have the same trouble with my stuff. Really would love to hear you tackle something soulful with a bit of groove though.
I love slow rock ballads, they're hilarious. How can anyone listen to something like Foreigner and not want to laugh, you'd have to have a heart of stone.
I can't lie I'm a sucker for soft rock!! Ha ha! & foreigners 'I've been waiting' is one of my faves...that synth hook is awesome!
This one is for @Jocphone - make sure you play it all the way through
I don't even dare to press play on that.. I'll start smashing up the furniture, again!
Thanks Matt - yes they're queuing up to use my stuff!
I'd really like to pretend I'd bought a fruit machine and mic'd it up for that track....the less exciting revelation though is it's probably a Cyclop mangle. Actually most of the weird noises on there are from Cyclop - including the out of place rave segment. Hold the bells...
