Til GMT -11:59:59, right? So, I have 15.5 hours to get something made and submitted. :-)
Ok, thanks!
It might be an idea...(maybe too much work for Richard) to post the previous months tracks at start of new month as peeps (myself included) can tend to get things in at the last min.We then can catch up if we missed any.plus the first 2 wks are always a bit slow anyway so it gives us something to listen to...or simply to compare to...etc.if it's too much work don't worry.just an idea:D
Smthg like the newest entry above ...
Ok here goes my stuff... posting at the last moments, but it's still the 31st here so...
This has been a complicated month for me, for personal reasons. On the iOS side of things, I tried hard to do a full track with Egoist, having several snippets that sound really catchy and nice - and most importantly, have received the seal of approval by the kids and wife here at home. However I really wasn’t successful in producing something with Egoist worth posting, that felt complete, much to my disappointment. I will post something else right after this…
I also read with interest some of the debate regarding giving and taking criticism in the SotM Club. I have to say that I have a hard time myself, more with giving than with receiving criticism. I’m not a musician nor a music critic, and my observations reflect more my own musical taste and previous (limited) listening experience than anything else. I think the kind of criticism that helps should take into account the vastly different tastes and styles in music, and I definitely am not able to do that. Still, and again largely based on my tastes, I’m kind of forcing myself to comment on the tracks :-)
As regards receiving feedback, I post here firstly to share - and to learn about - some iOS music styles and techniques, as all my music is 100% performed and mastered on iOS. I’m very happy to have an audience, to have some people listen to what I make, and to have a few of you comment on it. Thanks a lot for providing this great space!
@Jarmin - definitely this is my style of music to listen to. Funky, rhythmic, nice chord progression. The ending was kind of unexpected (to me), but overall very well done!
@Marcel - I think I had already commented on this. Really delicious instrumental track. Great progression. Does not feel incomplete at all, and definitely stands on its own without vocals.
@LostBoy85 - Epic it is, as already mentioned. Great production. As someone whose first language isn’t English, I found that whatever you did to your vocals, made the words hard to understand, especially at the beginning of the song. After that I didn’t notice the effect anymore. Still, you have a fantastic voice, and the song seems to be very emotional and personal. The arrangement was fantastic as well.
@badmaxton - Not my kind of music so it’s hard for me to comment meaningfully. I like the bass line a lot, but I do miss some melodic content after a while.
@AlterEgoUK - Fantastic track; becomes incredibly nice at around 1:30 - 2:00, and ends very nicely after about 3:00.
@Igneous1 - I confess I ended up enjoying the track more than I thought I would based on your disclaimers :-) I think the percussive and melodic elements were nice enough to make this a nice track to listen to.
@richardyot - Nice pace, I really liked the tempo and the bass line. I enjoyed the part after about 2:50 a lot more than what came before. The first 2 minutes or so sounded as a little bit excessively prolonged build up and maybe just a little bland. But as I said, after that the track really picks up and becomes truly great to me.
@dblonde - Great sounds. Sometimes I kept expecting some more variety, but overall very well done and nice to listen to.
@touchconspiracy - Techno / trance is not my thing anymore, and it definitely (as I remember from my Ibiza days) should be enjoyed on the dance floor! As I’m sure your track would be. For me, and listening to it at home with my headphones, it is a little repetitive in the beginning, and becomes great at around 1:40 onwards. A very good track really - good luck with that album!
@Jocphone - Man this is a crazy track you have here! It is definitely experimental, but with a sense of humor I think :-) Good luck on your Sunvox experiments. That is one app I have installed and deleted so many times on my iPad… Not implying at all that there is something wrong with it; but frustrating to me that I find it overwhelming!!!
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - A really nice experimental track! Good sounds and variations. I do agree with some of the comments in that maybe a more constant bass line would give more continuity to the track, but maybe that’s not what you are after? As per the ‘glue’, I use the wife test. Whenever my wife tells me that the track sounds like I stitched different tracks together, I know that more continuity is needed. (Happens very often by the way). Sometimes we are so deep into designing the beat and the melodic evolutions, that what seems to be one clear track to us is really missing a stronger ID to someone just listening to it for the first time!
@JohnnyGoodyear - I have to say I enjoyed this track. A marked improvement in the clarity and vocals over the previous month (sorry I’m not familiar with your entire track history!). Maybe not as dark as some other entries, and therefore not so deeply disturbing / emotional, but a great entry in my opinion.
@BvsMV - Really nice intro and reverse guitar sounds. I have to say I was expecting a heavier bass line, but as it is the track is light and playful - almost childish in a good way :-) , and works well too!
Here is my entry for the month. An experiment in progressive funky stuff. Starts off slow and picks up speed... it is a train after all :-)
Track sketched in iReal Pro. MIDI exported to MTS and worked there. Featuring also some WOW effects.
You could also cutoff submissions after week 3 leaving week 4 for discussion
@AndyX Woo Wooo! I've booked my tickets on your funky electric train!! (Sorry that was a bit cheesy! Face palm! Very tired!:) ) I loved your track! Cool concept, cool bass line, cool chord bursts/stabs like a train horn.Only thing that didn't work for me was the end, just a bit abrupt I felt.
Great job on your comments on everyone's tracks as well:)
Why not just keep the August thread alive into September? You are allowed to keep posting in this thread once the month is over. Keep the discussion going here.
I think having the previous month's songs posted in the thread for the next month would just be really confusing, since there would be (for example) all the August songs and then the September ones in the same thread.
Agree with El Jefe.....whenever there's a new comment, even on, say, SOTMC May, whatever, I take a look....as for the notion of cutting off at the third week etc., while I can see the thinking behind it, I think I would go mad
Cool how the increasing speed keeps you (well, me) interested, but I find the changing quite discombobulating, not in or because of the track itself, but just, well, we're not used to most tunes changing pace like this....I think you need an @richardyot animation here and we may have a whole seventies style show for kids whose parents grew up Prog. Not that there's anything wrong with that....
I know I'm always begging for lyrics/vocals on things, but I did hope to hear some platform announcements towards the end.....This train will terminate at Cockfosters....
Liked the piano particularly. Was the right addition at the right time.
Haven't had much chance to listen to the August postings but so far: @JohnnyGoodyear and @Jocphone - please keep doing what you're doing - much enjoyableness to be had. But I'm certain JG is deliberately Elizabeth Frasering the occasional phrases as he knows it confuses me...
Other standout track so far: @igneous1 - great tune and very pleasant vocals sir.
Yep, no worries guys:) just an idea was all. Albeit a naff one!:D
It was my fault for raising it.
I just thought, maybe give it until the 3rd of the month or something to open the next thread. Let people soak up the late entries and come back and complete all their feedback before everyone goes off to the new month's thread (which is what generally, understandably, happens).
But it's not a huge deal.
Sorry about the discombobulation - it was an unintended side effect of the train! Though you did make me look up the dictionary for that one
The piano is my fave part as well, which is why I put so little WOW effect during that one!
I am indeed reclusive by nature and also spend long nights in the cupboard indulging my glossolalia. Good spot Sir.
Just did the math and this boils down to writing a song every day for 27 years straight.

Long time listener first time caller...... Texas Gadget BLuEz
Same here, first time submission, still a work in progress. A friend and fellow musician wrote the lyrics, wrote the vocal melody, and sang. I composed and sequenced the other parts.
Instruments and instrument effects came from the Roland JD-Xi, sequenced there as well. Imported the result into MultitrackStudio (MTS). Tracked the vocals in MTS, mixed in MTS, mastered in Audio Mastering. MTS was a delight to use, by the way. Nary a hiccup on my pitiful iPad 3.
Thanks for taking the time to listen!
I wanna tell you 'bout Texas Radio and the Big Beat
Comes out of the Virginia swamps
Cool and slow with plenty of precision
With a back beat narrow and hard to master
Welcome Mister Monkey...good to have and hear you here. Even more so because what you have is something we're lacking....particularly liked the bass bubble....
Thanks. Been enjoying all the contributions. Not much of a critic here and mostly find inspiration from the creative efforts of the brave souls who participate.
Thanks AndyX. As I mentioned to Mf2K, SunVox isn't that difficult to get to grips with. There are some good vids on YouTube but I am starting to learn about some of the deeper ways of manipulating sound/synthesis that are just out of reach in Gadget. I would recommend sticking with it if that is your bag.
Well I had a blast making it, which counts for something I guess. I was listening to some quite off the wall Aphex Twin stuff this weekend and came away thinking how tame my output has been lately.
@AndyX nice funky track, very good bass line and beat, quite catchy and dance-able.
I found the tempo changes a bit jarring at first, but I got used to them on further listens, they seem to lend a jazzy/fusion flavour to the track, we rarely hear tempo changes these days since most songs are locked to one time signature in the DAW.
It was nice to hear a track with a sense of fun.
@rkmonkey noisy and dirty and gritty, I like the rawness of it, but it's more of a sketch than a finished track IMO.
There's some good guitar playing, but I think this one is more about the enjoyment of playing the guitar and making some noise than it is is about communicating any profound insights about life and love to your audience.
@LostBoy85, @richardyot - I definitely had fun making the track. Since with MTS you can change tempo and time signature anytime during the track, I´ve been toying with the idea of making a prog track for quite some time to see how that would feel like! Not that it sounds like it, but I had my Supertramp days in my mind - both for the prog and for the piano. Thanks again for listening and for the remarks
Yeah I like his stuff, I listened to the Modular album a few days back - that's pretty good for loosening up the old creative levers. I tend to stick on some Nurse With Wound when I think I'm getting a bit middle of the road, which usually does the trick.
Having a blast is the most important part for me - the whole point as it were. Even if by the slimmest of slim chances someone heard my stuff and wanted to sign me up then it'd be a drudge unless I was making music I enjoyed. I look enviously at guys like Stephen Stapleton and the blokes in Faust and see what a load of fun they're having, and being paid to do, and that's the job I'd want. If I'm having a blast doing what I'm doing now, then I'm half way there at least.
Life measurement or aspiration right here (also common cause of dissatisfaction and existential crisis
@thus very nice intro, really had me intrigued - love the bass when it comes in, and the keys. The voice surprised me when I heard it, I was expecting an instrumental - great to hear some vocals. I really like the bell-like melody that plays behind the vocals.
The vocal melody for me is a a little patchy, good in some parts but less effective in others. Also not too sure about the structure, it feels like one long meandering verse, and then there is a second section at the end ("time to break the ice") - a chorus would have given the song a lift (obviously not every song needs a chorus, but I think in this case it might add something).
Great production and mix though, on a technical level everything was excellent.
OK, I have a bit of catching up to do as, according to Wikipedia, "There are now over 40 full length NWW titles".
Thanks for the recommendation.
