Right, here goes with the rest:
@Jarmin - Beat 'Em (WIP) - I like this one, sort of a reggae/dub/dance mashup that's quirly enough to wet my whiskers.
@Marcel - instrumental - classy as ever, bit of a Dave Gilour vibe, very smooth.
@LostBoy85 - Phantom Love - bit 'modern' for me, but no denying the quality of production and playing, great voice too. Needs a fruit machine in there somewhere though.
@badmaxton - Breakin' The Past - good beat and bass sounds, and like the desolate track photo. Needs a bit more...stuff...going on though.
@AlterEgoUK - Middle Rise - again another classy track with great guitar playing. Rhythm's a bit twitchy for my tastes but still an impressive track.
@Igneous1 - Gilded Hero - I mixed up my previous review, it should have been for RichardYot! Nice tune though, calming...with a whiff of Peter Gabriel somewhere in there...
@RichardYot - Lights - see previous review! Very nice, great vocals..
@dblonde - The Porcupine - wow, very pro sounding. Big, proper proggish band music.
@touchconspiracy - Symbolic - like the rhythm around 1:58 - not sure about the trancey chords though...probably just not my thing...but the rhythm's great.
@Matt_Flecther_2000 - Somewhere in the Middle - I haven't read your notes (or for any of the tracks above), but this feels a bit more experimental than your usual work. As always though it sounds very professional and well mixed.
@BvsMV - Some Day When I wake Up - really like this, not keen on the beats though. I think it'd benefit from additional drum tracks, or maybe a different kit.
@Andy X - Electric Train - very cool - needs some searing lead or vocals though to make it complete...
@rkmoneky - Texas Gadget BLuEz - I reckon some @johnnygoodyear vocals would fit nicely on this..
@thus - Wasteland - good tune and vocals - drums need to go back and vocals more up front in the mix though
Well, I am in Texas and do have the blues....
@monzo ha ha! Damn it I knew I was missing something:D thanks for listening and for your comments mate.
@monzo
Thank you, I don't normally do prog but it just fitted in this case with the idea.
Something completely different for the next months tune
Nice batch of tunes this month people ,my stand-out this month is Wake up Blues ,good work Mr Goodyear

Indeed
It's September now..time for a new thread perhaps?
I think the general feeling is that people wanted to wait a week or so before the new thread is posted, so that the late entries could get some coverage in this thread first. It normally takes a couple of weeks for things to get going anyway, so I'll post the September thread next week.
Time left for everyone who contributed to add their input on other people's work ? I shall add my thoughts to the last batch of tracks soonest.
+1
Yeah, I'm only about half way through. So many entries this month!
Lol, it will be half way through September that the September thread starts and you guys will be still submitting and commenting into August!
Makes more sense to change thread title to track of the month for August/September lol
+1000
It's only polite to comment on others people's works if you're prepared to submit your work to the SOTMC (in my view).
lol (whatever that means, in this day and age)
2nd batch of commenting:
@BvsMV
This rework definitely improves things, good stuff for ditching the original bass line. The piano at the end is a
tad stilted perhaps. Decent mix too.
@Marcel
I like the main guitar parts - both rhythmic and solo and the arrangement / structure of the track. The drums have
a bit of a feel of a backing track, but serve their purpose. The pause at 2:06 was unexpected, but works okay.
Overall I like the minor key feel to it and the modulation to the more major key parts less so - but that's just my
personal preference.
@AndyX
Quite an alternative take on a 12 bar sequence ! I think there's too much reverb (from the drums ?) that has
congested the mix somewhat.The formant vowel-isms are a nice touch. Does the tempo speed up a fair bit towards the end ?
@rkmonkey
Space blues ? Quite an unusual arrangement and use of instrumentation, bordering on the psychedelic !. Mix is a tad
muddy in the low end.
@thus
The drums don't flow that well in my view (and are too loud in the mix), but the other component parts do so much
more. Nice vocal (perhaps raise the volume of in the earlier part of the track ?) and song structure - cool key
change and outro section too.
@Monzo
Whilst I do have a penchant for the more esoteric side of things, I'm almost stumped by this one ! Three songs in
one ? As a cathartic exercise it may well work, but it's far from an easy listen (which is no bad thing, usually)
'Astro' and 'donkey' in the tags add to the mystery...throbbing astro donkey gristle
Cheers to everyone who commented on my track, particularly on the mix / production.
Thanks for listening. To be honest it was more of an exercise in getting to know Cyclop, so even more experimental than my usual offerings....'normal' service should be resumed this month, hopefully!
I think with these I’ve covered all songs this month:
@monzo - Like you said, no structure or meaning. However I did enjoy it a lot. The good beats, interesting sounds, and variety in the right measure did loads to keep the track interesting from the beginning till the very end. Curious - did you use Egoist or any kind of sample mangling, or are all they raw outputs from synths?
@rkmonkey - Great first entry - some wonderful bass and beats out of Gadget! Sounds more like a fun jam than a highly structured track - which is not bad at all, by the way. Something that I need to work on myself
@thus - Very well done track on a lot of levels! Sounds, vocals, and overall mix and choice of sounds were all very nice. Like Richard said, at some points it felt like the track was building up to either a chorus or a nice instrumental section - I think either would have fit the song very well. I think I would have loved to hear an extended instrumental section Also glad to meet a fellow MTS fan!
Does the tempo speed up a fair bit towards the end ?
Thanks for listening! Yes, actually the tempo starts at 100bpm and increases at specific points in the track to 110, 120, 130, and ends up at 140bpm. By the way, there is really a lot of reverb on the entire track - I ran it all thru AltiSpace (Taj Mahal preset).
No, because entries for August are closed - but some people have still yet to comment on all the August entries.
September opens for submissions next week... I think people can hold on until then to submit - and make sure they comment on all the tracks here.
I think this is an excellent organic evolution as regards NOT opening the next month until a week or so into it.
Agreed! Thanks to everyone for the generous feedback on my first track. I was so consumed with creating it that I've neglected listening and commenting on everyone's submissions, but I will remedy that soon.
>
Thanks for listening again and the feedback. Glad you think round two is better and that you thought the mix was good.
Thanks - can't remember offhand but think the rhythm is from Elastic Drums, and everything else played live. Very little mangling funnily enough - raw sounds from the synths and drum app, though I think they were boosted a bit via Tonestack.
Review set 1 of 2:
@Jarmin - Beat 'Em (WIP): Whoa, that "hits on all cylinders" for me! Wicked ska/dance hybrid; loved it from beginning to end. I'm a huge fan of dissonance balanced with hooks. The patches really popped, and the horn sample at the end was the icing on the cake. Extremely well done.
@Marcel - instrumental: Smooth! You created a really nice atmosphere. On my headphones, one of the guitar sounds on the left had a periodic, unpleasant buzz that distracted me. For improvement, I'd say add a bit more variety. For example, vary the beat more distinctly in the different sections. Good job!
@LostBoy85 - Phantom Love: Ha, after your excellent "Moraira Sky," you are really showing your range! The vocals on this ballad are STELLAR. very pro and filled with genuine emotion. The musical instruments fit the mood perfectly. Mix sounded great to my ears. In short, I'm blown away. Looking forward to hearing more!
@badmaxton - Breakin' The Past: More noodling and glitchy sounds please! Seriously, the track really gets going after the false ending. You paint a convincing, industrial, dark mood. Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I wanted more instruments. Put more meat on those bones!
@AlterEgo_UK - Middle Rise: I like the mildly-dissonant "orchestra hit" sound that the beat gels around, which becomes a nice retro synth sound in the middle. Smooth and jazzy, it made me very happy listening to it. Very polished arrangement and mix. U got talent!
@Igneous1 - Gilded Hero: Minimalist and jazzy, demands a different kind of attention. The sounds evoke the band Japan for me, big-time. It's so amorphous, it's hard for me to put words to my experience of it. Atmospheric jazz? Good mix. Anyway, I appreciate your unique style and want to hear more.
@RichardYot - Lights: This! I hope you're as pleased with it as I was listening to it. The verses and the fabulous chorus really work for me. That chord/note at the beginning of the chorus is so, so good. You've got your own sound and it really works. Top notch!
@dblonde - The Porcupine: Nice plucked string sounds at the start and end. You really had my ears. Wasn't expecting the progressive rock turn, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, because you have a good mastery of that style. The two distinct parts felt like different songs, if I'm honest, but maybe that fits the spirit of progressive rock! Great guitar work. Re: the mix Snare feels too prominent. Good stuff.
@thus wow! Thanks very much mate:D
Thanks, @thus and @monzo
Review set 2 of 2:
@touchconspiracy - Symbolic: Very accomplished techno! Mix is solid, and the sounds all well-chosen. Perhaps it's just my biases entering the picture, but I would love to hear a lead instrument playing a melody or at least a catchy melodic riff. As it stands, the piece relies purely on chord changes (arpeggiated, of course) for all its movement. In all, though, a very nice job.
@Jocphone - Junior Terror Loop: Very avant-guard and intriguing electronica. You are really challenging the listener, but I expect you know that! The tempo change was a great choice; kept me engaged. From a technical and mix perspective, I'm going to be very opinionated: Use less compression! I think that would make the track more dynamic.
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 - Somewhere in the Middle: This is instrumental electronica at its best. Very Radiohead-esque to me, which is a massive compliment in my book! Anyway, absolutely love the two different vocoder (or vocoder-like) melodic parts in the second half. Mix is great. I'm super impressed with the whole thing — kudos!
@JohnnyGoodyear - Wake Up Blues: Those layered vocals are terrific and obviously the centerpiece. I don't know why, but I have some very specific opinions on how your song could be better, so I hope I'm not overstepping. I love it when you sing "without a damn good fight" — that's your hook, without a doubt. Personally, I think you need punch that line "straight" (I recommend exactly the way you sing it shortly after the half-way point) more often before you go into the variations towards the end. I also feel like the track is about twice as long as I'd like it to be. Unless you plan to flesh it out more (i.e., add more instruments) I see it as fitting really well as a sub-3:00 track between fuller tracks on an album; otherwise, the beat becomes a bit too plodding and weighs it down. Hey, regardless of my ideas, I hope I'll get to hear where you go with this. You are a great artist.
@BvsMV - Some Day When I wake Up: That is a great ambient track you've created! Nicely mixed and the sounds all work together very well. I loved everything except the way it ends. The piano feels right, but it seems like it stops in the middle of your closing thought, without really resolving. Stop on a different note maybe? Nice job!
@AndyX - Electric Train: That bass line is wicked-melodic! Love how high it goes at times. Vocoder bliss too! As it speeds up, it feels like it gets funkier, which I like. More funk and a more deliberate ending, and I think you'd have even more of a winner than you already have. Oh, great title too!
@rkmonkey - Texas Gadget BLuEz: Fun and playful, a nice first entry! It's very unorthodox, but somehow works for me. If you wanted to make it appeal more broadly, you might try a more traditional beat for most of it, and use the kick/crash thing only in certain parts. As far as the mix goes, the left guitar could probably be panned a little less extremely, and have some reverb added to make it feel like it's part of the "space" of the song. Well done, though!
@monzo - Austerity Head: A noise feast (yes, "feast," not "fest")! The piece surprised me at every turn. I kept waiting for you to lift the sqwawk box effect at beginning, but instead, the instrument/sound kind of faded out for a while, replaced with a buzzy synth. I was also certain that you would bring in a big kick drum and hat sound and rock a solid dance beat, but you never did. Maybe for a remix. ;-) . In any case, I like your sounds and I think you did a nice job with it.
Ha - epic commenting @thus!
Thanks @thus. Yep, superb and thorough commenting. It's great you obviously really listened hard to each track. Much appreciated.
In my case - you're spot on. It's a talk mod on a Tokyo drum with a long decay. And then a talk mod on a Wolfsburg patch, with some delay. Very cool you identified them as different.
I must confess for the talk mod thing to kind of ripping off (or at least getting the idea from) @RedSkyLullaby and couple of other artists like Vector Lovers. But there we go. The best form of flattery. .
@thus Good and (even better!) really helpful commentary, for me personally (me, me, me), but also throughout the group.
You put us to shame a little, but also set yourself a very high bar
