I noticed that import instead of creating a file in the preset browser just seems to load settings of the imported file as current settings and one has to save it manually to a new name.
Thanks Slush for the Techno preset 👍🏼

Alright, great there seems to be a way it works!

  • I’m only starting to get to grips with the sequencer but my suggestions so far:
    1. The start/stop button should always be visible.

    1. What does pitch in mixer do? It doesn’t seem to be working.

    2. Global sequencer progress should be more visible

    3. There should be user naming of pads, what if I have 4 toms? How do I tell them apart?

    4. I would have personally gone with 1 page for everything for max visibility but I guess that’s personal and it’s good to have large controls in live setting.

    5. At this point in time I feel like I’m beta testing and the only reason I’m not asking for a refund is because I like the sounds.

There is definitely a lot of improvement needed in regards to the UI / UX. Sounds good though, some nice features, a bit different, price is pretty reasonable, and dev has been super responsive

  • @janm31415 I just want you to know that I really like this. It fills an interesting gap between common drum synthesis (pitched tones and noise bursts), and sampling. I know that its modeling methods are available in other instruments, but to have them purposefully collected in this app and accessibly paraneterized is a wonderful novelty, that offers great utility. Thank you.

Yep, that works. Nice preset, @Slush! The possibility of accidentally overwriting existing presets are pretty obvious.

  • Been practising finger drumming for a few hours.

Seems like iv practised more ( because I got a cheat way to fingerdrum via controller )

The drumming is better for the 2nd part ( when sound is also made mono )

Do the drums sound better mono and panned or stereo wide ?

Not really trying for patterns but speed lol.

    ( This is oneshot )

Got used to processing drums now via fx

Needs the multiout routing of percussion to be ( either 16 ) or 8 chooseable.

I grew up listening to rave etc.

Only now just realised how much better acoustic drums are to electronic.

All hits are good but toms are nice.

  • 🤣🤣🤣 you read my mind mate!

  • Hi all,
I am still waiting for Apple to review version v1.1, so a first batch of small fixes (+ Logic pro fix) is coming soon.
In the meantime I'll start working on v1.2 based on the feedback gathered here.

  • edited March 10

Sorry, I uploaded version 1.1 which fixes a lot of issues, but somewhere a very annoying bug appeared. The decay and pitch modulation don't work anymore. I'm fixing it as soon as possible. Don't update to v1.1 yet if you can. (Bug fix v1.2 is waiting for Apple review currently)

Thanks for being on top of all this!

Consider getting beta testers Jan! A lot of the constructive critical feedback the app got on release would have been given in advance of release, I reckon, if it had been properly beta tested 🙏

I would call this thread a beta-testing corner for the JAmp Percussive; for indie developers, it’s a godsend. So, there we are… 😌

  • Hi ho,

What I find quite irritating that I cannot use all the pads from the synth section in the sequencer section. Will that be changed in the future?

I agree. Haven't quite figured out why there are 16 pads available, why you can't have more than one named pad per type (hi hat etc) and why there can't be a sequencer for each. Maybe there's a reason, dunno

I agree, different perspectives during the formation stage are very useful. Although it will depend on how niche the app is. If the target user base is small you may end up with half of them on your beta team and half the money in the pocket. Which is perhaps better than getting negative reviews and selling less copies because of that.

As I said through, the sounds sweeten the deal and the music community is generally quite supportive.

  • Respect to the Dev for enabling us to try before buying. Why can't they all do this!

Will probably pick this up when Logic issue is fixed.

Agreed. Ability to demo music production apps before parting with your cash should be a right, not a "nice to have"!

Yes, stupid of me that I didn’t take more time for testing v1.1. It was already past midnight and I wanted to fix it for Logic Pro. Too much haste is never good. V1.2 is currently waiting approval from Apple and will contain a Logic Pro fix without the bugs that were introduced in v1.1.

I will think about how I can change it in future versions.
The reasons that there are only 8 sequencer lanes is twofold:

    • Some DAWs don't like a lot of parameters. The reason that Logic Pro didn't work on iPad is because Percussive had over 2000 parameters (due to the sequencer). Most of them are hidden, and AUM doesn't have problems with them, but Logic Pro apparantly doesn't like. Now, I've found a workaround. So this argument doesn't hold anymore, and I think I can get away with a lot more parameters now. So 16 sequencer lanes should be doable. (Also, having a huge amount of parameters brings the compile time for testing the app up by a lot: like from 10s for building the app with a normal amount of parameters, to 5 minutes of build time for 2000 parameters.)
    • The internal "drummer" makes its vocabulary based on a standard drumset, i.e. a hihat, ride, snare, kick, some toms, a crash. That's why the naming for the lanes has been fixed, and why there's 8 of them instead of 16. The internal "drummer" needs to know which one to hit when creating its groove. Of course we could have 16 sequencer lanes, of which 8 of them are still tagged like hihat, ride, ... .

Ah right, that makes sense, thanks for your openness to suggestions and your explanations Jan

  • And to support the dev for all his hard work, let’s not forget to leave a bunch if stars and a nice comment in the App Store.

  • @janm31415 one thing I am curious about - the ‘grooves’ that get dialed in with the vocabulary button - would these not normally be different for different styles of music? If so, does the app give any way to dial in specific genres? It sounds a bit like it is geared mainly towards a kind of jazzy and slightly funky style?

  • Well, I quite like the sounds and feel of this app, despite some of the head scratching stuff which I think will get fixed to some degree. I just like to turn it on and let it go…

  • @janm31415 Final polish or not Percussive is such a joy to be able to use. Even if this was the final form of the app it’d still be a must-have to me. Further development will just be layer upon layer of blessing.

  • the mute/solo buttons on the Channels page do not seem to work for MIDI input, but only for the sequencer. this would make more sense on the sequencer page. ideally i'd like both that and a global mute/solo that also works for MIDI.

Agreed. I'd really like linked solo buttons for all 3 - channel, synth and sequencer pages

  • Hi everyone,
Bug fix release V1.2 is available on the App Store. This version will also work on Logic Pro for iPad, and has some MIDI fixes (wrt note on/off issues). Some minor UI improvements also.

About the internal 'grooves': These grooves are indeed pretty funky/jazzy oriented, using a lot of ghost notes. Maybe I can work on a John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) style of groove, that could be cool too :). The internal grooves with the Vocabulary knob should be able to have some kind of randomness in them I feel. Therefore I'm not sure about adding straight rock or pop grooves to the internal vocabulary. These can be programmed easily in the sequencer.

About the mute and solo buttons. I'll add that to the todo list.

For what it's worth, I really like your taste in programming the grooves, thnx 👍

  • tiny bump: hope independent noise/tone decay and shorter minimum decay can make the list at some point @janm31415.
