I want me one of those Launchpad controllers
I find it much easier to use than the pads in app, especially when grooving and lost in the moment
The Pro looks even cooler, especially in some of the performance vids that are appearing on YouTube.
Two questions.
Do you need a computer for any setup, or can it all be run from an iPad alone?
Any problems with it affecting other apps playing in the foreground while LP is in the background?
No, and er, no
Well the second no is as long as you can stop your apps receiving OMNI/All midi inputs and picking up the note on/off messages coming from it. It's no biggie for me so far, MidiFlow/MidiBridge will sort this out anyway I'm sure if needed.
Only oddity I have found is that on occasion it seems to lose the midi connection and I have to unplug/replug the USB. This seems to happen if I am doing a lot of loading/unloading of apps which no doubt is causing the iOS MIDI 'brain' to go a bit wonky, or if I leave the ipad for a while, perhaps sleep mode is doing it as well. I'llkeep an eye and feedback on this.
Also, full size version needs power or powered hub. Mini does not I believe, but the Mini doesn't do all the fun colours. I still have to stare at it for about 30 secs when first powered on to watch the light show , hehe
@Launchpadforios Please bring colours to the Launchpad app
Just realized question 1 wasn't yes or no answer
lol
Yes it can be run with zero setup required from a PC.
Looking forward to being able to save our own samples etc and pleased to hear it's a priority.
This priority list is great news. Can't wait to see the next version.
That's the funny thing with apps like launchpad and Blocs Wave. For some the commercial loop packs are a big deal, others on the other hand (myself included) will never use any of the loop packs. We like the app because of its production capabilities. It has to be difficult being a dev of these kinds of apps trying to serv such different user bases.
i look at it like this, if it's a sampler instrument they should make the sampling the priority, if it's a synth they should make synthesis the priority, if it's a sample library they should make the library the priority, and if it's a sampler but they offer a library they should drop the sampling part if they want to make the library a priority or else you end up with samplers that don't sample, don't slice, don't import, export, don't resample, etc... like so many things we had to go through at first with R.Nyms....that's ridiculous just drop the sample part and sell your library...anyways there's room for all but I'm looking forward to the days of no more sampling shenanigans. Blocs sounds like it's going to have a proper sample slicing environment and why wouldn't it, the current way it's set up looks to be made for heavy sample based production
Sorry if it's already been requested but can we have ability to change tuning of the samples globally? If I import a new sample that's in a certain key, I'd like ability to change all the drum loops to be in that key.
Thanks in advance!
before anyone tells you that's what bloc is for let me say..... we want to do this in the launchpad app.
Haha thanks. I was prepared to type that as well. Now if they hooked Launchpad up with Ableton link, I'd let it slide
I don't think Ableton allow developers to charge extra for Link, so does that mean they won't add it to Launchpad? since they charged for midi sync.....
I believe Launchpad would need a total rewrite to allow it to change anything on the fly. So would it make economic sense? Your guess is as good as mine.
The big issue adding link to LP is that it would need a realtime stretch engine able to keep the app running when changing the tempo while timestrechting up to 48 samples at once resetting the process every BPM tick. Pretty stressy job AFAIK
All I can think is that surely development of the launchpad app hasn't ceased and since link is one of it's logical next steps why not expect it?
Maybe they will make a new version of Launchpad in the future using what they have code wise from Blocs?
I too want Launchpad with such features, but I don't have expectations that it is the logical thing for the company to do. I don't know their staffing levels for iOS production or the level of investment available. I also don't know the timeframe needed to implement such features in its current code.
I was pointing out why in my opinion it could take a long time before link will hit launchpad because loads of optimization will be needed to avoid crashes, glitches and all of the other issues that real time stretching involves. I definitely agree that would be a killer feature, even if I don't see tempo changes as used, nor beneficial, as everyone think it is. Depending on the genre played tempo changes are, most of the times, less-than-welcome.
I may be totally off the mark, but Blocs seems to be an area they may expand, from what has been said.
We have Blocs Wave. Maybe it would be easier for them to create Blocs Launch as a new app than rewrite Launchpad?
If our current IAPs could be transferred over, that would be resonable, even if there was a cost for purchase of the app.
Launchpad could be kept for the other markets that just want to play loops.
Blocs Launch could be for us that would like more features and the library's could become common to both apps, maybe?
So, we can now confirm that we have been working on this.
We now have an engine, that we have built ourselves, that allows for real-time stretch in Launchpad for iOS, and so Link support will thus also be able to work. It's a super chunky bit of work, as we're making it all ourselves. We can't confirm the timing of the release, but rest assured, we really want this feature to ship, and we might post a quick demo at some point to show the progress.
In terms of Link, we would clearly not charge for this. We actually named 'MIDI Sync Output' very specifically, as we knew that when we added Link support, this could be confusing for customers.
All in all, V2 of Launchpad is shaping up to be pretty exciting. With this, we have two months of big features coming out for Blocs Wave and Launchpad, that we really appreciate your support with, and we aim to get you guys the crucial things you need to make music on iOS. We just need to go as fast as we can get them to you ;-)
I really appreciate you being open with the plans. Will wait patiently thank you
O just to add. Don't rush it. Launchpad is so useful as its rock solid. I've never had a problem with it. Take as long as you need to maintain that
now you know
Launchpadforios Gracias!
It's a bit of a deal breaker for me, without Link I probably won't use Launchpad. I'll wait for a comparable Link based AU clip launcher which will be developed eventually. Novation could add it if they wanted to, but maybe it's not part of the philosophy of the app.
look up 6 post above yours
^Ah yes, good news and a good move by Novation
In a studio environment then I would agree but in a live environment it is different....
Another place it is important is if you are trying to play in time with live performers that are not playing to a click track, so you would need to adjust tempo in order to be able to get sequencers/loops/LFO's/Delays/stutters etc... into time.
LINK on Launchpad...that's going to be a great update. Looking forward to it Novation
