My mate got his working too, so I'm seriously considering getting one too.

Hey, I just discovered that you can power the keyboard via USB connection and it will still connect to the iPad via Bluetooth. Just plug into a charger and flip the switch to USB. Even though the switch is on USB the device will still show up as and connect as a Bluetooth device. No CCK + hub + 2 USB cables, and no battery drain. Sweet!

Oh, that IS cool! I haven't tried yet, but was playing with it via us last night. Why this is paticularly cool to me, is that I want to use my iPad synths as instruments running directly into Logic. So I can plug into desktop usb, but still play IPad synths directly into Logic.

@MonzoPro I'm really diggin mine and wondering what took me so long to get a controller. And between using it via usb or Bluetooth, the responsiveness feels pretty much the same either regardless of connection.

Are you using AudioIO? That's on my list if I get the controller - I like what I'm hearing so far.

  • Does it work via USB plugged straight into the camera connector, or does it need a hub? If so does it need a powered hub, or can it be fooled using a non-powered one?

I only use it via bluetooth and via usb on my laptop. Dont' have a camera connector. Also, I don't use AudioIO.

    Ah ok, thanks anyway.

Anyone else using it via USB?

It needs a powered hub. The iPad/Phone doesn't supply enough power. You don't really need to connect it by USB though, unless it's important to you to synchronize the built-in arp via MIDI clock. BlueTooth works well enough that I doubt you would notice the difference between it and connecting via USB.

If you're asking because you don't want to be dependent on batteries, you can connect it directly to an iPhone charger to power it, and still connect to the iPad via BlueTooth.

Oh ok great, thanks. I'm not a fan of bluetooth/wifi connections as they can be temperamental and unreliable, I'm a bit of a cable fan so having to use a powered hub seems a bit of a faff.

I'll have to think about this one - now I've got my Edirol working it's not so urgent but the Korg is an attractive option.

I've only had mine a week, but I can say the battery is still good with much experimentation/use. And the bluetooth seems to be very stable.

Also, I hooked it up via usb to my laptop, and also tried it via bluetooth (battery powered and not through usb). Couldn't tell a significant difference either way. Was very responsive regardless of how I had it hooked up.

Ah right cool. I think I will get one - the integration and portability are a big plus. The novelty of lugging my Edirol around to gigs and sessions will soon wear off, a controller that slips into a laptop bag with my iPad is an attractive thing.

  • I just picked mine up finally in Toronto, Canada. I love it! lol Much better than I thought.
I've never had a reliable controller for IOS before. This looks like it could be the one. The bluetooth is just the icing on the cake.

I was skeptical myself, and one of the first questions I asked was whether it could hook up via USB. But I haven't had a single messed up connection or missed note in all the countless hours I've used it.

Batteries last a long time, but quit all of a sudden when they do die. I think the thing shows a led when this is about to happen, but I'm rarely looking at it. Still, even playing live, if you put in fresh rechargeables, you'd collapse well before the batteries died.

  • Come to think of it, I'm sure I've accidentally disconnected cables way more than this thing will ever drop it's BlueTooth connection.

My biggest complaint is that there's no way to just simply change the MIDI channel. I'm used to having that ability and hate not having it. In order to use different channels, you need to set up separate scenes in the PC or Mac editor, then switch between whole scenes, itself a cumbersome two-handed or fingered operation. Hate that! Love the rest.

it seems like the scales and chords features of the Nanokey Studio also apply outside of Gadget. like in Ableton.
is it possible to switch between the pads being chords and the pads being assigned to something else, like chordpolypad ?
    Thanks :)

  • Bringing this back from the depths.. anyone know if the backlit lights can be turned off? Local shop doesnt have one and quick google search isnt turning up an answer.

  • There's not an easily identifiable switch. You might check the product manual.

  • Seems it has an LED eco mode that dims them. That might work.

    Why?

  • Personal preference

  • The following can be set via the PC/Mac editor software:

    @theManual said:
    Energy Saving Features
Auto LED O .......................................... [Disable, Enable]
By setting this parameter to Enable, you can choose to have the LEDs automatically decrease in brightness after a set period of inac- tivity; and then turn off completely after an additional set period of time where there is no activity. This setting is applied whether the nanoKEY Studio is operating with a USB connection or on batteries.
    LED Brightness ......................................................... [1...3]
This parameter speci es the maximum brightness of the LEDs. “1” indicates the least bright, and “3” indicates the maximum brightness. This setting is applied whether the nanoKEY Studio is operating with a USB connection or on batteries.
When the nanoKEY Studio is operating on batteries, the brighter the LEDs, the shorter the battery life. In order to extend the battery life, specify a lower setting.
    LED Illumination ................................... [Disable, Enable]
This parameter can be used to activate the nanoKEY Studio LED illumination after a set period of time has passed with no operations being performed. Set this to “Enable” so that the LEDs will light up or to “Disable” so that they will not light up. If the Keyboard, Knobs, etc. are operated while the LED Illumina- tion is active, the nanoKEY Studio returns to its previous condi- tion. This setting is applied whether the nanoKEY Studio is op- erating with a USB connection or on batteries.
LED Eco Mode ........................................ [Disable, Enable]
This parameter speci es whether to use the mode that dims the LEDs. Set this to “Enable” so that the LEDs will be dimmed or to “Disable” so that the LEDs will light up as usual. When this pa- rameter is set to “Enable”, the battery consumption will be re- duced when the nanoKEY Studio is operating on batteries. This setting is applied whether the nanoKEY Studio is operating with a USB connection or on batteries.

I've got my Nanokey Studio this week and I'm liking it so far: Immediate joy and jamming with Gadget. I wonder though if there is a way to assign specific chords to the chord pads or the white keys in Easy Scale mode?

Not sure if this answers your question, but the guy in this vid is doing some clever stuff with a scale/chord combination:

Thanks for this Mister. I am only recently on board with this NanoKey thingie, but I like it considerably, find the BT excellent and love being able to throw it in the bag and haul it around the world etc.

You threw me there a bit Boss, with this old quote.

I didn't get one in the end, a mate bought the two controllers and I wasn't that fussed with the look and feel of them. Pricey, too.

I'm going off my little Microkey as well, finding it too small. If the finances pick up next year I'm going to look at a keyboard with a few more keys, and maybe some pads look, but don't think I could cope with the Nano 'button' style.

I hear you. I'm enjoying this thing, especially as a quick/easy travel item (whether here in Spain or just wandering down to the coffee shop etc). Very good in Gadget, which I don't use much, but find myself fiddling with because of the Nanokey, which makes it worth my while...

I can see how it works for some - if I had your globetrotting cafe culture lifestyle (and more importantly, your money) and used Gadget more then it'd definitely be a thing. For me though I need a (just right) medium sized controller for home use - the Microkey is too wee, and my old Edirol is hit and miss due to its abandoned drivers. And I'm guessing if I whipped out the Nanokey at a cafe here, the farmers would have me tied to a ducking stool within minutes.
