We talk a lot about film in this house. Often, over dinner, ranking scenes or performances or screenplays. A couple of nights ago we talked about tense scenes in cinema and while the other two had ideas, I couldn't settle on any one thing. Since then I have been giving it some thought.
This is a cats and dominoes video. At about 37 seconds there begins a section of true tension in film- making. Brilliant.
The TV series adaption of Sally Rooney's book, Normal People.
Pros : the male lead, in particular, is an amazingly nuanced portrayal of a particularly Irish mix of charm, shyness and lack of confidence. The female lead is also wonderful, and absolutely gorgeous.
Cons: I never thought I'd say this, but I think it actually might have a bit too much sex in it. Some would find it slow paced, I like it though, it's true to its literary roots.
Netflix original “I am mother” is a creepy dystopian sci fi about AI robots taking over the world; definitely one of the best AI premise I’ve seen since Ex Machina
Also on Netflix, Mindhunter is the best true crime drama I’ve seen in ages, it’s a look into the FBI’s early development of serial killer profiling in the early to late 70s. It’s so good that it’s quite a bummer to get through binge watching season 2, only to find it hasn’t yet been renewed for a 3rd —and no word on if they’ll bring it back after the cast and director are finished with current commitments. I would have definitely slowed my pace if I knew beforehand.
Babylon 5 remains my favorite scifi show ever but I hadn't been keeping up with the work of its creator J. Michael Straczynski.
I recently found out that he collaborated with the Wachowskis of The Matrix fame on the Netflix show Sense8 so I've started watching that. It's hella racier than B5, to say the least.
Now you have praised it so highly by referring to Ex Machina I must watch it. I've heard great things about Mind hunter too.
Mother blew my mind. Was lucky enough to see it on the big screen, one of my movie highlights of the past few years.

Fantastic actors, script, pacing, character development, etc. it reminded me of “The Killing” in a very good way.

Just dived in to the 60s Batman TV show. Loved it as a kid, love it now watching with different eyes.
Well Damian Lewis made Billions after Homeland. Which I’m enjoying a lot. Albeit a bit late to the party.
Broadchurch is one of our favorites. Anything with Tennant is good.

The first two episodes of the Grateful Dead documentary series on Prime was my choice last night. After reading a massive book on their history, this came across as pretty well researched.
Thing is though I don’t actually like their music that much, but the history is interesting - particularly the Acid Test/Haight era - and the young, long-haired Garcia looks like I did at that age.

Don't get us started on all the good things you should watch...but I'm trying to think of older shows that might be unknown to you. I also wonder what the range of Britbox is. Two well considered items from the eighties would be The Boys from the Blackstuff and The Monocled Mutineer which starred Paul McGann the year before he was the 'I' in Withnail and I. Anyway, both excellent and high quality bits of work from that period...
I've been a Nathan Fillion fan since Firefly and Serenity, so I've been really enjoying 'Castle' on Prime. Good combination of crime/comedy/romance with good stories, characters and performances. Even got the wife hooked, and she's notorious for figuring out mysteries... I remember about 5 minutes into 'The Sixth Sense', she announced "He's dead"!

Boys from the Blackstuff - possibly one of the best bits of social realism created for TV. As someone on the dole at that time I can confirm how accurate it was.
Gritty, and grim. Harrowing to watch, though I did enjoy the final scene in the pub.

Such a contrast to what I was just watching - part 3 of the Grateful Dead documentary, everyone having a wonderful time,stoned, making music.
I looked a bit like this at that age. Living in Stoke, on the dole, straddling between the two realties, house full of trippers, but Coronation Street outside rather than the Haight...
Sometimes you have to construct your own realities, and to hell with theirs.

As for Withnnail, when that came out in 87 it was an unerring portrait in many ways of the existence my flatmate and I were living in London....strangely it took me a few years to recognize that it was all terribly sad and that he was Marwood and, well, that I wasn't. Contributed to me leaving the country in search of a different ending, and for that I will always be grateful (and will always love that film).
