Yes, you are tied to one preset per session... However, I jump between sessions on the fly all the time. 'Sessions' here are not really like sessions with other hardware or apps. The intention is to jump between them on the fly just like patterns. So you can have tons of variety in a set/track... It is awesome.
Yes, Mixer levels are saved in a pattern.
Just out of curiosity what other grooveboxs do you have your eye on? I love this one so much I just want to buy another, heh.

a) Yes. Patch selection is per session. Though, session switching is easy and can be immediate or bar quantised so making & using variations is quite painless.
b) Also No, sort of, the drum patch selection & virtually all the synth patch parameters are automatable by CC from external MIDI. So if you use in combo with a DAW or sequencer you can make a lot of mischief.
Mixer levels, and enable states are saved with the session. Starting a session always uses the saved values. The tempo is also saved, but only used if the sequencer was stopped, if it was running the new session continues at the current tempo.
Session launching is great, you cna tweak the crap out of a session then just press that session button again to reload your saved values at the next pattern change. Great for build ups and drops.

It's great that you can freely play with mixer levels while changing patterns in a session.I did not expect to change the preset per pattern but that's fine,the macros give you still plenty of variations nonetheless.
there is still that one thing called"pan"that i'm thinking about...so,one last expert question:are the imported samples converted to mono or still stereo?
@AudioGus i'm lurking for a MC 505.But there are so many mixed reviews,mainly about bugs like "occasionaly deleting all user presets" but others never experienced it.It definitely has more sexappeal to me but since i can't try before i buy...don't know.and memory cards for that are ridiculously expensive.
But what i know is i would have a lot of fun with circuit.I just don't like the fact that you only have a stereo output.And i'm afraid that"everybody"sounds the same now with so many circuits arround.

The MC505 is a great little box, it was one of the first bits of gear I ever had. Other than the cards being hard to find for it, the biggest issue is that the displays go bad. You can buy third party replacements on ebay, but if you find one used be sure that the display works as that's by far the most common issue with these.
yep,i know about the display issue.I've read literally EVERYTHING i could find in the net about the 505 (your very helpful FAQ as well,thanks for that
) But even replacing the display doesn't seem a big issue (there is a beautiful black with white pixel display on ebay

Anyhow,circuit is such a bargain.It's not too hard to overlook this small issue.I have an eye on an ebay auction for a 505 in great condition.After that's over i know what i want.If i can make a snapper with 505...fine.If not,circuit...here i come

I played around with a blue electribe a couple years ago, felt so clunky and sounded super hissy. I am kind of tempted by the new one, particularly in that the export features would be handy... I just don't get with a lot of the electribe s ounds I hear from videos etc. But there are occassional thongs that peak my interest. in the end I will probably just grab a Volca FM and/or Sample to compliment the Circuit.
yah, it is kind of like Gadget to me, lean on it too heavy and you are just making a product demo. Making cool stuff is still all about mixing and matching and of course ye olde engineering/ideas/muse/fx etc. Anything that says it is %100 Circuit... sure is.
i had the blue electribe and it was really a love/hate relationship.Great interface and sequencer but the"different"synth engines all sounded quite similar to me and quite harsh and static.I hated the sound of it and so i used it mainly as a drum machine at the end.Sold it and never looked back.

Cool, sounds like you're well read on the 505 then, so I'm sure you'll have a blast when you snag one. I still think about getting another one jus to sort of come full circle. That was my first groovebox, and largely defined the way I still like to write music today. Would be fun to see how I got on with one now after almost 20 years.
The blue electribe was a love hate thing for me. It was fun to use and had a lot more depth than you would expect, but I found that I had to use such narrow parameter ranges to get the sounds I liked, that there was no room to tweak things live. One small nudge and my cool sounding pattern sounded like ass. No kit reload either ala the elektrons.
The new one is better in some respects, lots more options, but that comes at the expense of needing to really spend a lot of time menu diving to get the most of it. And that 24 voice poly is weak. In a lot of ways the mc505 sounds better, and it has 64 voices and way more editability. I get that the electribes are a totally different workflow, but it just takes me to long to come up with ideas I want to use on it. The Circuit rocks for that.
I personally don't mind doing as much as possible on just one box, that aspect of sound quality doesn't bother me. If it's something that's 100% Circuit, then of course it's going to have a particular sound. For me it's like complaining a strat sounds like a strat. Part of the fun comes from seeing how far you can push that "limitation" out of the equation.
If I'm using it to sketch out song ideas or loops for my live sets, then likely they'll get a lot more tweaking/treating as I go forward. So really not an issue, it'll sound different in the end anyway.

But it's another thing i can't find an answer in the manual:can you save pattern chains per session?I doesn't look like you could but the guy in the video above uses longer than one bar patterns and he is switching between sessions as well (as far as i can see)

If Midisteps could send program change cc to the Novation Circuit it would be the PERFECT iOS 'song mode' sequencer for it! The Circuit uses program change on channel 16 to switch 'sessions', (which are essentialy just a group of eight patterns).
Anyway, would it be possible to add 'program change' cc to the list?

HAH,how about that:
if you chain patterns: can you record a melody live over 2-4 bars/patterns?Or do you have to record it in "pattern pieces" and chain them together when you are done?I'm thinking about pads/strings,that's something you rarely would do only one bar long.
You can chain all 8 patterns and record continuously over them! GOod deal!
OH and then you can use midisteps and midiflow to send program change ccs to change sessions so you can have eight patterns x 32 sessions. record some big ass long old melodies if you like.
Don't forget, as long as you use a poly patch you can also live play on top of the sequence. I really like playing the pads. You can get a lot of expression with them.

I went to my local dealer today and bought it (after i played arround with it for half an hour).
Was lying in bed making a beat with this last night and just so impressed with this unit. I'm just not inspired by the synth sounds, they feel so flat and generic.
Really hope they release a pack or two soon.
Anyone here with custom synth patches? I would love some pluck sounds and clean bass.
I might try to make some over the next few days, will share if they are any good
