Talking about bigwig- I wonder if they will include abletons link tm
At least it works.... not like.... whatever!
Just make damn music with whatever!
Hmm... I smell paid corporate trolls.
Considering this very board only exists because of an app that exists solely on iOS, I find it beyond disrespectful to post in here exalting a competing platform over the platform this app's developers make their livlihood from.
I think you either have to be part of Microsoft's sophisticated multinational paid corporate troll army, or a severely disgruntled and unbalanced person to feel comfortable bringing that here, and neither type should be welcome.
I think people bringing that type of attitude here should be thrown out on their ass, and Sebastian, I would gladly volunteer to be the person who gets to push the button.
Seriously, if they say to get a Surface Pro over any iOS device, please boot them asap.
I read this board everyday and could mod.
They will keep pushing FUD like they have various times in the past, especially against Linux which I lived through while I was using various distros years ago.
They are conniving scum, and get paid to shill, so don't have mercy on them.
Of course, I have no problem with someone discussing their issues with iOS, Apple, or their devices. Nor do I have a problem with someone suggesting a setup that incorporates both iOS and any other intriguing platform.
But when they hold one up as though it should be considered a valid choice instead of an iOS device, they are clearly crossing a line.
Yep there's that stylus, and the z axis expression thing...the one on pro3 isn't as good as the one on pro4, on iPad Pro it's a stylus its a pen, either way it quickly mushed into "blah, blah, blah" when my cartoonist friend tried to explain it to me. He's writing his own code for pen, there's a ton of pen software, again blah blah blah. I could say provocative stuff about which corporation has the edge on the best pen for drawing but I don't have a dog in that race, just like I don't have a dog in this race. Getting on the fence means I (almost) have the best of both worlds. I say almost because it's Air2 instead of Pro, Pro3 instead Pro4. Not only is it way better than Air2 and the Groupon refurb Toshiba (!), I also don't have to pick one pen (or make my own) like my friend.
I did have recourse to wireless mouse when I was installing a synth, their Install Wizard wasn't optimized for touch. The synth was fine, and the synth was fine. The wireless mouse is fun, but I haven't needed it since. It's the same with both machines, u can always add junk...stylus, keys, etc. The only reason I got The Other is that it doesn't need that junk, either. The keys could be cool for trackers...
@AQ808
I agree, see above. I'm not really an "instead" type of guy as some here could attest, quite the opposite. More of a giddy nerd that's bought (buys, ongoing) everything Sebastian, Michael, and a hundred others make (hundreds? F--k). The only reason I continue is that the music keeps getting better, and a plan is forming. There's no vs. in the plan, it includes all kinds of who-knows-what-other objects, (and best of all people it seems) and hopefully it'll throw off a lot of cash to share with all the young geniuses.
I wonder if that's true, could be, don't know.
There are Surface pushers just like this everywhere Apple forums exist. It's pretty weird really. I assume it's just oddballs trying to justify money they've spent, but I don't know.
So many reviews are shill (a fact), these could be considered aggressive reviewing.
I initially thought it strange that someone would come to an unrelated forum to push wares, but it happens so much, I've gotten used to it. A lot of hardware forums demand disclosure. Even then, they come- in droves.
To me it's kind of tiring, all the comparing of specs and technical subtleties. But after all it's just talk (and funnily there's a lot of hate for Apple, it seems...), and talking can't take away the joyful experiences I find myself in with the devices I use. I'm happy, and I wish the same for all, cheers, t
My view & option to your question, is simply Yes, I think they are? & I agree with you.
But Apple are not the only company who do this. That's why it's best to be patient each year before you buy.
The people on this forum aren't like this but you see MS fanatics post on iPad forums a lot. A good example is when Jakob haQ made a Halloween video and some jackass started preaching in the middle of the comments section.
I don't think however the Surface users on the AB forum are like this. I don't agree with them but we are just having a friendly debate. There are good points on both sides but I'm still sticking however with the setup that includes an iPad Air 2 or Pro that interfaces with a laptop/desktop.
For iPad pro read ipad 1. Apple is dipping its toe with this tablet. Its successor will be on sale in no time at all, it will be eye-wateringly expensive, have hardly adequate memory and we'll all want one. We should undoubtedly wait a couple of years.
I flogged my ipad air 2 as i felt it was not sufficient for my musical needs and bought a Surface Pro 3.
I then endured the same appaholism that i had on ipad on Surface Pro 3 and bought Ableton and loads of (expensive) VST's.
Now Push 2 is out i flogged my Surface Pro 3 and bought a Push 2 to use with my lap top!
Its great to have competing options
Absolutely love my Push 2, its about the same size as an iPad Pro!
Then once 'Link' is out and implemented i will use my iphone in my setup, or may get an ipad mini!
Go figure.
Tbh, I'm quite happy that Microsoft is doing something to catch up to Apple. Or even that anyone is still trying. The Surface Pro is a nice machine and I'd definitely consider getting one to do mockups.
uh oh, it was Sebastian all along hiding behind the curtains pulling the strings on this puppet show , he's been a double agent for microsoft all of this time quick get the tar & feathers so we can do him up real fineee.... lol @ conspiracies.
I've got a question what is it that makes the other tablets so good for writing, like the samsungs or whatever in all the commercials they have people writing on them so well, but on the apple commercials they have people drawing on them usually. ... what app do i need to get to have the same quality of writing with a stylus on my mini?
You can't use regular iPads for drawing, because they're optimised for touch, which means iOS takes the area of your finger touching the glass and calculates a single point somewhere in the middle of it that would be the equivalent of the tip of a pen, which is really inaccurate. Since that's how the iPad is built and only the Pro has the technology to actually detect the tip of the Apple Pen, all iPads are terrible for drawing and always worse than tablets built for pen input (like the Surface or some Samsung tablets).
I have a Jot Pro which has a transparent disc at the tip. It writes and draws quite well and only costs around €25. No batteries, no bt. The pencil on iPad Pro is probably much more accurate, though. But it costs €99.
I didn't know that - I'd earmarked the Pro for a later graphics tablet purchase....maybe I need to check out the Surface, though my Wacom/Macbook Pro is doing the job for now.
so it's not possible to make an app that can address this issue, I was looking so forward to using my mini for writing. This is such a bummer, ?
It is quite possible and usable as I wrote earlier.
To be honest, i'm not sure about this. I have have a nice SP4 i5 and a new iPad Pro with the Pencil.
I'm undecided about iPad Pro. On the other hand, i've owned all the Surfaces, and I can only say good things about them, and Windows 10 is rather nice. These two are different, but comparisons are valid.
I think this thread is valid, and should continue. In no way am I connected to, or paid by MS, or do I know anyone who is. To even mention this is absurd
To sum this up, if I had to choose, at this point, the SP4 would stay.
I think this is a very relevant thread as speaking for someone who has tried to be very supportive of the iOS recording world, it's been very frustrating for the last few years to have ongoing workaround after workaround just to do simple tasks. If I can now have the convenience (and affordability) of another product that gives me the options and ease of what is available on desktops, I will switch in a heartbeat. Now if I were one of the developers here, instead of looking at this thread as a negative, I would look at this as positive since I would want to know how to coMpete effectively. I would want too work more closely with other developers(who are as talented and committed as I hopefully am) to ensure that the options I offer musicians are vastly superior and unique to what is offered. Maybe start developing a desktop software program that works seamlessly with an app that has brand recognition. I know that is Audiobus made a desktop plugin/program in the future, I would be very supportive as I know they're geniuses who care about quality and user experience so other devs should really start thinking of their brands. Maybe then we wouldn't have shitty abandonware that taints the entire ios music culture.
BASICALLY STEP YOUR GAME UP.
It's like this for all of us in whatever industry we're in. You don't think there aren't a bunch of talented engineers and producers out there who only worked with analog gear and tape who are now no longer relevant because they stopped improving themselves.
We all have to adapt or die
I would say regular iPads are bad for writing but pretty good for sketching and pretty ok for drawing. The combination of good apps and easy zooming makes for nice sketching and drawing experience. The ease of pinch zooming compensates for lack of accuracy. However, the pencil will of course bring precision and lift the experience to a different level, from pretty ok to really good.
Well I've been using ProCreate, Bamboo Paper, & Sketches for Air 1. You can draw on the iPad(but I'm no pro). But as I don't paint or draw a lot, it's a lot easier using the iPad, than sharpening the pencils.
That explains a lot. One of the biggest frustrations I have with my iPad is how fiddly it can be to work with. The increased precision of pen tip input would be a welcome addition. Too bad it's only available on the largest iPad.
I have that pencil too because I tried to make mockups on an iPad as opposed to pen and paper. It's just not nearly as good as a wacom tablet or the Surface pen, even on the surface (pro) 3. Haven't tried the Surface pro 4 yet but it's probably not worse.
Sure you can draw on an iPad but there's a distinct lack of precision.
I'm looking forward to trying the Pencil with the iPad Pro and seeing how it feels.
I feel a bit the same. A lot people says i should have more patience but in the last momths or even years there was not much of a change about the iOS issues. I love really the iOS apps and so but i also ask me today if iOS developers could not enter also the windows 10 market and creating some of these awesome mult-touch apps as VST f.e.
I don´t die for a brand like Apple or Microsoft or whatever but i want to support the awesome third party iOS developers.... i just wish i could support them also on another platform since in theory it´s all there.
I´m even not sure if the music app market is so much better these days on iOS since it´s a niche anyway.
Just in case it will ever happen..... i would buy a Surface Book in a heartbeat and buy all these apps ;D
It would be really interesting how the things run for developers who makes apps for iOS and desktop (like beepstreet, klevegrand and a few others) to know where they got their value from. But i doubt anyone is talking in depth about it.
However, i would like to thank you here (add an iOS developer of choice) for all your work. I was a bit harsh sometimes too but that has (mostly) nothing to do with the iOS developers itself!
Cheers!
Edit: F.e. i don´t know if that means or help in any way in reality but at least it sounds good on paper!
http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/29/8511439/microsoft-windows-10-android-ios-apps-bridges
So why are there no proper windows music apps. I really hope it will change. It can just be better for competiton developers and consumers. But i doesn´t know a sh..... about these things So maybe my thinking is just stupid, sorry!
There are dozens of proper windows music apps - they're called programs and plugins.
My guess is that people's viewpoints on this depends on how they first entered the world of software-assisted music. For those who started on computers then moved to tablets, some limitations of ios are glaring. For those who started on ios, they might not be aware of these limitations because they haven't experienced what's possible on computers. I'm in the first group. After months of trying to finish a song on the ipad, I've basically given up. I have a limited amount of time to spend on music, and for me many things I do with ease on a computer are cumbersome on ios. I realize that there are many talented folks out there (many on this forum) who are producing great music solely on the ios platform. So I know it's me, not the tool. Given it's current state, the ipad works best in my workflow as a rough sketchpad that I use to create audio and MIDI that's refined, mangled, added to on a computer DAW.
I started on an iPhone 4, then iPhone 5 (which i still use), then iPad Air (sold it and i'm without iPad again yet), then bought a Macbook Pro 15" retina with tons of plug-ins
But there are still some multi-touch app which i love and would like to use them with all those automations, midi fx etc. which are not there in iOS (or just with tons if workarounds).
So using a single app on iOS still rules while when i use several instruments and fx the desktop workflow is far beyond iOS.
Also things like loading a DAW or boot up your desktop/notebook are just seconds today with modern computers. So pick it up and play is as fast (or even faster when using lots of instruments) as on iOS devices.
But sometimes the simple tools have ways to achieve a sound which are more fun and/or faster! F.e. Falcon is a beast of a tool but it can't do what Mitosynth can or it would need a lot more time to achieve that.
The sound output is not so high quality but after mangling it trough goid FX there is no big different.
Then a lot plug-ins sounds awesome but are too "sterile" or boring to use. And last but not least the UI on iOS looking much better. Things like multi-touch, high resolution and new interesting ways to play with sounds are lacking a bit in the desktop world.
Still the best way to use booth together.
If i had to choose one it would be the desktop due to incredible instruments and FX i really would miss and the better and faster workflow.
I just wish Apple would fix the major bugs they introduced in Logic 10.2 and mainstage
Apple needs to step up its game. We could have been so much further with what we're doing if it weren't for bad app review guidelines, lack of monetization options and bad or lacking documentation. And bugs, of course.
This article sheds some light upon just some of these problems: http://www.theverge.com/2015/11/19/9757516/ipad-pro-apps-pricing-ios-developers-opt-out
I've also commented on that earlier this week:
https://storify.com/dittsn/indy-developers-have-an-app-store-problem
This is what i posted too here a few days back! Do you see it also like this? Would be interesting to hear from a developer.
Well, you already answered this in your post...... thank's for the insight!
Edit: I just can´t really understand the last point. Why is iOS the only platform woth for apps? That´s the strange thing with the market. Without developers the windows app market will loose out further and the Apple app store problem too. If lots of developers would migrate to other platforms (or making more crossplatform things) it would attract more people to buy their stuff there..... sounds a bit like with the chicken and the egg.
But we all know that the big money goes always to the big companies..... what else.
There is a lot less money to be earned with music apps on Android, while it is much more expensive to develop and maintain apps for it there.
The desktop market as far as I can tell is stagnating or shrinking, so it's really only relevant as a second or third option after iOS and maybe Android for indy developers who aren't already making apps for the desktop.
At the same time desktop apps and mobile apps are so vastly different that it takes significant effort to port them to or from either platform.
If this doesn't answer your question, please keep them coming. I'd love to shed more light upon this.
