Hello there. Great forum but I'm an absolute newby. Please can you tell me how I post a song to the group? Do I just put a link in a post to my song on Soundcloud? Sorry to be so slow...
That's right, just post the Soundcloud link, it will automagically display as a playable link.
    Thank u
  • Sorry for the multiple posts, I'll get the hang of it in the end.
This was composed in Gadget and then into Auria, which I think is fantastic.  I threw a few effects at it, added a vocal and there u have it. I worry that the vocal needs to be brought forward a few milliseconds to make it a bit more snappy on the beat.  Also it's a touch empty at times, particularly before the end segment kicks in. I've been trying to make my tunes shorter and less self-indulgent. I'd welcome any comments. Cheers.

@crouchie Shorter? Less self-indulgent? Sir, I believe you have come to the wrong venue altogether....off to have a listen.

@crouchie Well, first off, welcome etc. Good piece, won't surprise you to hear me mutter about Depeche Mode and early Human League etc., as much for the vocal/melody/style as the tune itself.

You've got a good voice, but I think you could promote it far more via the mix. For me it's not so much a matter of its millisecond placement, but more the effects/size etc.

If you checked out any of previous SOTMC postings you will have sussed that while we are a friendly and supportive enough crowd the underlying idea here is not simply mother-love ('Well done dear!"), but some constructive criticism if possible, which you should leave or take as you wish etc.

I put that paragraph there because my main crit of this song is the words. Especially in this declarative style the words are very clear and -for me- some of the no pain/no gain felt a little too cliched and moon/june-ish. BUT I can also be a pain in the arse about words, so just letting you know what one poncey over-literate bugger thinks :)

  • @crouchie 'ello mate! Welcome to da club! Well I think this is a strong effort mate.I really liked the music and I loved that kind of stop dead "binge" line.I thought it worked really well.Good singing and I thought that the timing was actually spot on to my ears.

keep 'em coming dude! One a month if u can:)
  • @crouchie cool dance? track. 80s..... Club worthy.
  • Really grateful for your comments, and don't worry johnnygoodyear I want to hear honest criticism.  The words are meant to be a bit of a pop at celebrity culture/reality tv, (ooo get me, mr pretentious!) but I take your point that they come across a little cliched in places
  • @crouchie very good track, what an entry into our little club. I love the vocal delivery, it lends some real grit to the song, love the music and the arrangement, all very hard-edged and tight. Timing seems spot on to me. Also like the synth swoop that comes in at 2.30 and the gradual build up towards the end, followed by the final drop. All in all a very well-crafted song.
  • @crouchie   Well, you've certainly set your own bar very high because as a first effort it's very good. Are you sure I'm not talking to Phil Oakey? You have his tone & style of vocal delivery & it fits neatly into your song. You have a fine voice that could be a tad higher in the mix (as I'm learning, thanks to this Club).

It's not too busy & your song is free to breathe without gasping for air.

continued. Wrong button pressed...again.  I too like that synth at 2 & a half minutes. Timing spot on for me. Can't wait to hear your future tunes. Thumbs definitely UP!
  • Hey dudes,So this is a slightly different entry for me as its a cover. Its also (for me) experimental as I've never done anything like it before. Its a cover of a song by "Shai" and it's acappella..eek! I have recently purchased a shure mic! Woop whoop! So no more internal mic struggles for me!! Any thoughts are appreciated....apps used,auria...um,synthmaster,drumjam,fugue machine...candy crush!! :D :D

V kind. I would be lying if I said its my first tune, but I've been working hard to get to grips with Auria and I hope it's starting to come together.  Really impressed by the enthusiasm in this forum and grateful for the feedback.  Will be sure to reciprocate.
  • @LostBoy85 wow, that fits together beautifully, very tight indeed.  Mic was a good investment! I really think the reverb is perfect too - what did you use?
  • Here is a remix/remaster of my song from last month.

I spent last month reading as much as I could about Compression, and EQ.  Comments last month were that the vocals needed to come up, and compression on them, and that it sounded muddy.  I thought I could tell a difference between my original input song, and my new version.  Now, I'm not sure.  Less muddy?  Vocals louder, and leveled a bit better?

Thoughts please, and soon to give feed back on all yers.  Thanks!

  • @High5denied - Hey, Jayson - nice piece, very distinctive mood and flavor. For some reason, despite the synthy bits and the driving, tribal verse drumbeat, this song made me think of ol' Delta Blues. The vocals do rise and fall, but it kind of goes with the song structure for me. If you hadn't mentioned it, I probably would have assumed you intended to be more "across the street"-sounding on the verses and "in your face" on the middle section.

Your voice sounds good, quite strong in some places. You kept the guitar more atmospheric, less obvious, which I think served that tribal feel well. Great work!

  • @LostBoy85 nice vocal workout you've got there, lots of harmonies and parts - must have been a nightmare to record, even with the new microphone.

Musically it's not really my thing, but the technical skill you have is undeniable, very good singing - all 8 of you :)

I think the new gear certainly sounds like it's helping though, the vocal sounds really clean and well balanced, without that harshness from last month.

So for Christmas I think we would all feel let down if you didn't do "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
  • @High5denied No idea why (the 80s lyrical content?) but the opening of this put me in mind of a blaxploitation movie. That to one side, it's a very driving and urgent piece in this incarnation. I'm going to do something I hate (ha!) and be negative without also being constructive, but only because I'm not experienced or clever enough to suggest a solution, but this is the kind of song that I recognize (from my own efforts) as being slightly less than the sum of its parts and, for me, this is probably to do with the mix/production as much as anything else.

I often make something which I believe in, but at the end of it (or at the place where I can take it no further) I'm left convinced that a real engineer/producer could take the stems/tracks and make a better, more integrated, final product out it than I've managed.

There is a lot going on in this number and tremendous energy, and you've done the hard work, you've written the song, made something where there was nothing. Perhaps, as and when, you might think about some further collaboration to polish it up and knit it together. My own answer (short term as it may be) is to put the thing in a metaphorical drawer for six months and then take another listen.

Thanks.  Mapped out in Gadget then into Auria.  Plenty of Saturn on the beats and voice to try to rough it up a bit. I love Gadget, but I do find things tend to come out sounding v similar.
  • eustressor, thank you so much for the kind words and for listening.  I appreciate it!

@JohnnyGoodyear Thank you for the honest thoughts.  Ya, the production, mixing/mastering I am still an infant at.  Still learning, I actually hate the recording process.  I enjoy the music production side of things just slightly more than I hate recording.  I love playing music, live, and listening to it.

I am not going to be offended by anything anyone has to say.  I am using this form, to learn, learn and learn.  It's been fee nom in all so far.  I NEED feeback on my songs!  Basically, cuz I don't know what the hellavallouva I'm doing.  The articles I read on Compression and EQ last month were very helpful.  I've read things on them before, but I read one after the other, and made it stick.  I wish I could get it right, like you said, in different words, it's not quite there yet, it's lacking the "professional touch".

Could you do me a favor, and listen to the first time I submitted the track in October I believe, and tell me if you think this is an improvement, or a step in the right direction?  Thanks again!

  • Sweet vocals. Amazing harmonies, what more can I say except can I have one of your voices please.
  • @High5denied nice job. Like the song and the evolution. Most songs I record are ideas that don't get the love and attention needed to make a finished product. It is a challenge for me to have a structured song and polished sound. My goal for this month is less is more. Let's see what happens.
  • @High5denied Hey man,I really like this song the first time and I still do it's a completely unpredictable listen which I admire and I commend you getting your study on and for having a go at bettering your previous effort with it.I don't remember enough about the previous mix to know where the improvements lie, sorry mate, but It certainly didn't sound muddy to me.If I'm honest the vocal volume does still fluctuate. From the middle on seems louder to my ears. All I know to suggest is using a reference track of a similar genre.I also think that if your anything like me that giving yourself a couple of days of simply not listening to that song can give you fresh ears for any adjustments needed.

i can't wait to hear more of your stuff dude :D

Ooohm oooh, and a mash-up medley of Julie Andrews favorites. Oh go-wan.....

Mister, you are a Man-Band. Like a boy-band but there's only one of you and you don't need those other guys stinking up the joint.

You're also a love-puppy, but I've heard that's what the girls like. I, for one, will not be letting Mrs. Goodyear listen to your output. I'd never hear the last of 'So why do YOU make that terrible existentialized racket when you could be making sweet love songs like that nice man?'

She has other qualities. Many of them.

Anyway, good technical stuff, good new mic put to very good use. Yes, you have a superior voice, and you know that already, but you are also putting it to use, especially in terms of the harmonies etc. Accomplished stuff.

It's true that your genre is not my box of socks, but I can still appreciate them. So, yeah, Lion King and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious are obvious silly/fun Xmas party specials BUT more seriously I would love to hear you take on something not completely other. Maybe even still acappella. Or not.

Lots of possibilities of course and it should be something that works for you, maybe we should have a poll :)

Off the top of my dizzy head I would suggest 'For the turnstiles' (Neil Young), 'Drug Buddy' (The Lemonheads), 'Keep me in your heart for a while' (Warren Zevon), 'Please Be With Me\Cowboy' (Duane Allman), 'Goddamn Lonely Love' (Drive-By Truckers).

    All love songs, mostly, kinda.

Saturn's one of the pretty Auria plug-ins....
  • "Pretty"??  Goes to show how perceptions vary.  I will say you can get pretty out of it, but my initial impressions lean to nasty, dirty, and gritty...but all in a positive way.
