@JohnnyGoodyear, YES JOHNNY! A thousand times yes!!:D I've been trying to write a song about that bloody watch for years!! It deserves all the glory it's getting (though in truth,I really wanted one of those old calculator watches,so I could write "boobless" any time the desire striked.) Anyway,back to the song.I thought it was clever how u made the uke sound like musical rain (i must have bunked off that class!) I really liked the simplicity of the track which meant no issues with not hearing the vocal. (which was very nice btw) Do you use vocalive or something similar for the octave harmony?
Some great imagery with the lyrics mate.Nice job!
Thanks for the encouragement. I can help with the simplifying, just throw everything into the river and start again , but, nah, I wouldn't really recommend it. Second time this has happened to me actually. When I was nineteen, maybe twenty, I was about 200 pages into writing a bad novel and was sick of it and made the grand gesture (we broke up anyway) of throwing it page by page from a train window going west out of London to Reading (yes, a pretentious ironist even at that age). Got off the train and got a ticket for my trouble. For littering. Was more upset this time around because I should have known better. Ah well.....
Simple it may seem, but worth sharing none the less. This little detail has been on the back of my mind all through the last few months. It's going to be an ordeal to go through all the mousetrap like contraptions I build to make up a song. But I think you may have triggered a smallish revelation.
Like others I enjoyed your song this month. You may not have planned it but the Wild Honey effect has probably caused you to focus a little stronger this month.
The characterisation you bought to your voice was quite entertaining. There was a bit of circus ringmaster/gangland boss to some of the utterances. As for the timing, it bothered me the first time but on second listening that feeling had melted away and i think actually brings more life and character to the piece.
It may seem a daunting task but I wonder whether fitting the timing of the music better to your voice, rather than trying to skip along to a fixed tempo, might serve your music better?
Thanks for your thoughts and if my own small lightbulb throws some other light, all to the good. As for your point above, I think you are right, or should I say it's an attractive idea although one (musically) I wouldn't really know how to go about. Truth is I often 'write' songs by singing words/poems I've written down without any music, just whatever comes up/feels right in terms of both tune and time. These are, mostly, the best 'performances' I get recorded. I then try and sort out some sort of accompanying music/beat/BPM to re-sing them to and this always feels like a bit of a squash.
I should admit that as Richard and I have mentioned to each other and the crowd in general, the other truth is that if I sang any of these pieces more than two or three times my phrasing (and thus timing) would vastly improve. As this is more within my capability (the hard work of repetition is easier than acquiring the musicianship ) this route is on my list of intentions for 2016. Getting there. Slowly.
Thanks again.
Very nice song indeed, JohnnyGoodyear. Good work!
Yep, it's all good advice but the simplest way to get yourself in time with the music is to stamp your foot, dance a little, while you're singing. You might try recording that one time, with the stamping as your rhythm track. Who knows where that could lead..
One of the dullest aspects of computer created music is the fixed tempo we all often accept with out thinking. We have all these tools for near infinite manipulation of sound and to a lesser extent rhythm/groove but tempo seems to get forgotten. My Plan B track last month (funnily enough a fake uke track too) had wildly shifting tempo throughout ..but it proved a little extreme.
I think all that has just reminded me what else I need to do with this month's track. Thanks
I hope its okay to do this, but here is my 2nd entry for this month. I've been quite productive with Gadget recently. This track was about half done up until last week, since then I reworked it a couple of times every day to get it to a more finished state. It's a bit mad this one...
Thank you. Appreciate the encouragement.
@JohnnyGoodyear really effective arrangement, I hear some Waits and Matt Johnson in there, like the gentle brass underneath the uke. There was a vocal effect in there, made it a little sort of swirly (?) that put me off a tiny bit, but I liked the transposed vocal at the end. Nice one
You are welcome!
If there is such a thing as Prog Funk this might be it Not my typical bag of belisha beacons, but was interesting as I kept getting reminded of Genesis and then George Benson and then back again. Certainly very polished and I have a tendency to think of Gadget (which I like very much) as being a bit spare, but not here.
Some new ones added i see. I will get to those soon.
Here is a song I'm working on. I'm at the half way through mix stage, no mastering done yet. (Not that it would matter, lol. ).
Would like to get everyone's thoughts. What sounds good, what needs improvement. Should I keep the intro?
EQ, compression, panning, suckage and so on.
@Igneous1 has got that synthy/retro feel, but love how varied and dynamic you've made it. So much more musically accomplished than any of the old toot I come up with! Really enjoyed listening to it. I like Gadget and it's really handy, but it definitely has a characteristic sound to it. Cheers!
@crouchie
Many thanks, but I should say that I think your track 'Binge' is really good and sounds very contemporary itself.
The voice is spot on.
@JohnnyGoodyear
'Prog Funk' - A very apt description indeed.
You're both right. Gadget does have it's own 'sound', probably due to the limitations of the Gadget synths. I try to concentrate primarily on the arrangement to add interest (hopefully)
Thank you Mister Crouchie. I don't know whether there was a swirl effect or whether it was/is the cold/cough I've been sporting this past week. Helps the warbling in some ways (timbre), not so much in others (breath).
I used to do a late-night turn as Captain Olaf The Drunken Swedish Sea Captain which involved a somewhat Scandinavian (drunken) take on Tom Waits. Perhaps I need to revisit it... Thanks again.
@High5denied Oh yeah rock meister! Manic drum start into a glorious hard riff which kicks me in the guts with a pair of steel toecap boots! The breaks remind me of "Rush" both in the rhythm structure & your vocal. Excellent stuff indeed. I'm still learning about all those technical things you are asking about & struggle myself.
Maybe turn the snare drum up & the hats (a tad) so that it really cuts through the guitar. That chug, chug chugging riff you play, is what I crave but it's very difficult to achieve using Guitarism. What drums are you using. I would love to drum live to your track. The abrupt ending works. Yeah, I look forward to ripping my ear drums apart with your finished version.
@Igneous1 I'd say, very productive! Well done on getting 2 tracks out this month. Chefs omelette swung my hips, Wildcat Palatine made EVERYTHING swing, well, almost everything
You've successfully managed to play many sounds without them getting in each other's way. The bass drives your song along its funky path in a stubborn, melodic way then the lighter sounds/tones interact giving it an almost oriental feel in parts. Beautiful. The first couple of bars at the break at 2.30 is hauntingly good.
Lots of sounds & textures that you've mixed & produced very well to create another fine, limb moving, dancing song.
Another great track for mr. Agree with others, polished and great spatial feel
Like the songs. Great riffs and singing. Jack Whiteish in parts. There is some popping/clipping here and there I think. Guitar at 3:00+ is sick. Others here can probably help on the technicals.
Wrap up warm there Olaf. Looking forward to hearing ur next one.
Ah thanks. I've just had another listen (after some serious ear wax removal) & hear it now. The uke app is another one that I've added to my list. Forgot to say that you play it very well.
I've been told I have naturally sad fingers...
@Bluepunk, Thanks for the listen. I thought a fellow Rocker might dig it. I always seem to forget to include the apps I use. The drums are all RockDrum machine. Mostly used song mode, sequenced a few beats. I will give a shot to increasing the presence of the snare and the hats. Appreciate the comments on that.
I used Bias FX for the guitars with my trusty Fender fat strat. Who I call Fendy. lol. Auria to start the mixing process. Multitrack DAW to record into. err..wait, I mean Auria Pro! Ya, the chug a chug is not really possible with any of the guitar apps. I've tried with a great number of them, and nothing beats palm muting on a guitar. No substitute.
@rkmonkey, Thanks you as well for the listen. I appreciate the notice of pops, do you remember where in the song they were? Ball park? Thanks for the love on the guitar. I've got two different leads/solo's playing there in the song. And I was just going to use one, but I liked them both, so I panned them hard right and left. Still not sure if they blend well at the end or not.
@Igneous1
I love the synthy start to the song. @30 sec into it, it sounds a lot like the back beat of MJ - Thriller. Kinda has the same feel to it and rhythm. @1:21 the synths performing the scale like synth leads are awesome. @1:40 it's a slightly different feel to the song than at the beg. I really like the sounds you chose here.
@2:30 very nice soft break. again a different turn for the song, a bit more mellow. I feel like there is a thick Bass Drum missing in the first half of the song, but....then it wouldn't fit so well in the second half of the song. It's prob. just my love for 90's techno where the Bass Drum was beating in everything. lol.....Great song, enjoyed it!
@JohnnyGoodyear
Cool, such an amazing and simple Uke beg. Your voice is sooo good. Soothing, complimenting the Uke perfectly. The lyrics are excellent, and flow nicely throughout the song. @1:15, the dual vocals are sooooo good. See, I added two OO's to signify the even better vocals .
How'd you get yer voice so deep? Very very pleasing to listen to.
One Note, the song.................It's too short!!
Gets better with each listen. Guitars work great.
Pops: 1:32 right then left, 2:25 l, 2:42 l
Great job
Nice track, @igneous1
@Igneous1 +1! Hey man,so I listen to your tracks a bit differently now,as previously I don't think I was understanding your music correctly.Now I pretend I'm on a sightseeing bus and we go for a drive and I get shown lots of nice things but often just the once...and then,4 mins later I get off the bus and go "well that was cool!" That's exactly what I did with this one mate.I liked how you kept it nice and simple towards the end,it gave it a nice dynamic twist.Nice one dude!
Where were you?
@High5denied hey man,I just gave your track one go as I'm about to go to bed,but I haven't forgotten you mate.I will give proper feedback tomorrow mate as I def like it but think there's some things you could do to improve it...plus I need to listen to it some more.I will say that the sandwich line was awesome and made me laugh! There's really not enough songs about sandwiches in the world!:D night all!
Sweeet! Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and critique it. Please let me know any and everything you think I could improve. It hasn't been mastered yet, and is only partially mixed. Have a good rest!
