@Bluepunk Thanks for the thoughts. I believe Mister @monzo is in Wales, although not entirely Welsh. As for how he's doing I have no idea, no news, no indication; he doesn't call, he doesn't write. I imagine he's fermenting just nicely....

Thanks @JohnnyGoodyear It's been a while so was hoping he's ok. I'm in Wales so if I fire up Cyclops, adjust volume to extra high & drive around the Valley's with speakers hanging out of the car windows, I'm sure he'll be drawn out (like a Bisto gravy trail).

By the way, your lyrics for Black Dog are brilliantly clever & emotional. You are able to tell a story in only 3 or 4 words. A*+.

3 days later. A request for a future song please. Would like to hear a music version, (like Black Dog) of your poem "Alcoholism." Those words, especially the line "Scrubbing at the skin" says it all. Some wordsmith you are @JohnnyGoodyear

  • This thread/site is awesome.....Shiat, I mean EPIC!!! So, deff. getting the popping sound from my drumz. Not exactly sure why, except that the parts I cut and pasted I may have done so in un helpful places. I re- cut a couple of the pop areas, and they sound much better to my ears. I think since I hadn't gotten to the full mix stage, I didn't listen to the drum tracks on solo much. Though, I don't know if my ears are really able to pick that frequency up very well.

So........Thank you for catching them for me! Much appreciated.

@Simon_Acetone I like that retro electro, almost chip tone in places, vibe. Nice use of the sample from the naughty man. I just wondered if you had used much EQ and compression/saturation? I think this works as proper retro sampling piece, but it would sound even better with a bit more bottom and a brighter high end, then just a bit of compression to knit it together a bit and bring the general level up. Good work

Thanks @crouchie, glad you like it :-)

It's very interesting that you ask about the compression/saturation.... I currently have a mentor who is a pretty famous DJ & producer and we've been discussing this very topic and how to improve it in my tracks

His number one suggestion was "record it to tape as loud as possible for extra compression/saturation, then record it back into the iPad"

This treatment of the track is a cut up between my original version - so no tape hiss) and large parts recorded to C90 chrome tape (on a deck bought from a Dalston charity shop) with a few extra little bits with weird reverbs etc on.

Most of the track is actually the chrome tape version - it adds a really nice flavour to the sound and you can only hear the tape hiss in the quieter sections (which have been mostly spliced out)

  • One other interesting (?) thing about this track is the 'famous line' (and the photo) is from the press conference where he was denying what had happened and the whole rest of it is from another press conference where he was admitting it. I used well under of a minute of over 10 minutes of him rambling away - including quoting scripture

The amazing thing was I put the whole 10 min+ sample over the track and it was pretty much all in in time with my music !

The way Clinton speaks is very rhythmic and the cadence of his voice is just great!

He was the first black President....

  • Hello all, another one, my apologies for troubling u.
Auria Pro is galvanising me. Took the vocal from a track I've done with the band I sing with. They not so keen on the electronic stuff, but they're learning...
It's about a fella who's not so nice.
Auria Pro, Beathawk, Sunrizer, ff Twin etc
Tried to keep it simple, not crowd it, even tried to EQ it a bit. And if in doubt I just stuck side chain compression on it! ;-)
Really appreciate your comments, enthusiasm and positive attitude. Great forum

  • @Simon_Acetone really interested to hear how u work, not tried that way and want to hear more. Your mate sounds v handy! I have a friend who is a trance producer that gives me a few tips (and displays great patience with my inadequacies!). I like that oversaturated tape sound. Keep it coming.

  • At an epic 5 and a half minutes long here's my last submission of the year.

Have a great Christmas, those of you who are into that sort of thing.

What do you want to know?

I'm 100% iOS (iPad pro and iPad Air 1) except when I do things like I described.

I write quite a lot in Gadget, then import the audio into Cubasis to beef up the production, improve the arrangements, add vocal bits etc... I also do tracks and remixes entirely in Cubasis, using a selection of apps, effects etc...

    Your mate sounds v handy!

He certainly is! He's given me loads of great tips and helped me with various problems... His identity must stay secret for now though....

I like that oversaturated tape sound. Keep it coming.

    Thanks mate, I'll try!!

No need to apologize for 'troubling', especially in light of good work.

    Terrific taut, confident start.

Would love your voice (I do love your voice :)) mixed/produced a hair sharper. I don't even know what the word I'm looking for is. There just sounds like there's the slightest film over the top of it. Maybe an EQ thing? Dunno, not my line of technical skill, just a comment from the ears.

Was V. pleased to hear the second voice(s) come in, just the right time. I was just thinking I wanted to hear something else, a sax, a girl, electric piano line....

The song, in the traditional sense is/was done at 4.30, but the carry-on from there made me want you to let go even more....take off.....break down.....push on.....maybe when we see you do it live? :)

    Keep at it.

Ah. The Runcible Spoon. Good old Teddy Lear, nothing like enough of him over here in the colonies :)

I imagine this (or I was imagining it) as the sole soundtrack to an animation, hard drawn perhaps, black and white, charming and a bit off-beat in equal measure BUT THEN about half way through a squad of Really Bad Men with electric drills arrived in my comfortable living to remove my teeth on live television. Creeped me out considerably.

To be honest, I found the whole thing increasingly disturbing. Started off all pantomime cardigan and I ended up feeling that this whole world has gone to shit and there's nothing left to be done. Inexorable. Not good music for gentle drug use or other states of mind.

And I mean all of that as a serious compliment.

I like political content/comment in music, explicit or implicit. Not enough of it about. And you have found some excellent material or selected the right material.

The music has appropriate punch, but I think I would have liked just a little more coherence/arc to the narrative. More Bill? Maybe. Some other development in the music.

I think the problem (mine, not yours :)) is that I/we know of Clinton's political and personal struggles with the blue dress and therefore want more than what we know already. It's such a hashed over but also ridiculously lurid tale/affair that in some ways you're telling us a story we already know the punchline to.

That being said, I also think this would be terrific accompaniment to the right visuals/film material. Would need an excellent editor... and it also must be said that your control of the beat and rhythm is very good.

Ah, yes, that poem (or that Alcoholism, I guess). I haven't tried too much to take blank verse and make songs with it. A little, but not much. Tend to stick to doggerel; easier to write and easier to sing behind the closed hands of rhyme. But it'd be a good challenge.

This piece is on the same long-winded subject and I have thought of adapting it, which I may still do, but it can be hard working with the old truth.

With prose like that, how could I take it any other way?!

Thanks for commenting on my love song Mr G.

  • @Simon_Acetone I would have liked to hear a little more in the way of surprises in your track this month, I thought it could maybe do with a little more variety in the music to hold the interest, for me the spoken word sample wasn't enough to keep me listening (although I did listen to it 3 times).

  • @Jocphone couldn't hope to match the v eloquent description from Mr G, but echo his sentiments. Challenging, creepy, takes me back to Throbbing Gristle and Skinny Puppy. I think the levels and mix are wonderful, the bass comes through beautifully and holds it together. Troubling but lovely...

Thanks crouchie. I actually thought I overdid the loudness a bit in the Audio Mastering app when I listened back again, the bass is a little distorted at the start but thanks for the comments on the mix.

    Troubling but lovely...

And there was me thinking this one was my most accessible yet.. ;)

Ah, your title, which should be in the medal positions for the STOTY awards (Song Title of The Year) forced me into your world. That plodding, throbbing immovable bass with a Terminator melody to me is a a darker, more threatening version of Disneys Fantasia. You've replaced those manic marching brooms with a fleet of JCB droids who've been programmed to twist, turn & gyrate to your song.

As a kid, that part of the film scared the life out of me. As an adult (hmmm) it still does & so your song had me searching the cupboards for any spare diazepams! You gave me a break half way through. The break wasn't for rest, only a couple of minutes to allow you to rasp file my kneecaps. Finished off with the sound of a robotic cat taking a hit of Sarin!

The mix is spot on. Industrial, thought provoking, perplexing & exciting. I couldn't be happier. Great work.

But for the SOTMC threads, I probably would have stopped visiting the AudioBus forums. This really has become an oasis of poetry, meaning and sheer joy for music. And it's comments like these (all of you) that make the trek worthwhile.

  • @crouchie really like that track, great vocal - a little Depeche Mode-ish but I have a feeling you are already aware of that :)

It's a great understated vocal melody, and the electronic backing suits it. Drums might be a little strong, but probably subjective. The production is top-notch, sounds like a professional release in every way. Most of all though it's a compelling song that makes you want to listen again.

  • @fRAS a nice evolving soundscape, with lots of different elements that keep the interest as the track progresses. Great atmosphere and choice of sounds. I like the unintelligible voices, they really add a sense of mystery. A brooding piece.

  • I was going to say I hear music....

Motivated by the discussion in the linked topic, I made myself an attempt at composing house music this morning (Brazilian time, btw). It ended up more like "house-rock", but anyway. Auria Pro is solid: 28 audio tracks heavilly loaded with effects, and without a hiccup. Buffer set to 4096, of course, but still impressive for an iPad.

  • @fRAS great track. Congratulations on your daughter.

Interesting track, gets the imagination going.

  • @Simon_Acetone, Hey dude, what a cool sample to base a track on.Interestingly Miss Lewinsky used to come and stay at a health spa that I worked at in a tiny village out in the sticks here in the uk every year! It was always so weird whenever I had to interact with her as she's really kinda average and unassuming and yet she brought the most powerful man in the world to his knees...or vice versa! ;D anyway back to your track...it blows!!! Haha,oh no I didn't!!:D I actually really enjoyed it mate.Nice work! That's two in a row now mate...keep 'em comin!

Su casa is rockin'. Great groove, mix and vibe.

  • @fRAS Hey man, welcome to da clurb! Congrats on your baby,I have a 6 month old myself. Its great fun! Your track I thought was beautiful, lovely slow and evolving.I really liked the extra little melody that came in around 4 mins, that was a nice touch.Ive just finished reading "the Martian" and this track, with the field recordings and the vast spacial sound made me think of that book.Very nice!
